At the bottom of the screen is a list of "people" who are here.
There are also "bots".

What are they?
What do they do?

I have also wondered the same thing...

I think they are people sent from the (google, yahoo etc) search engine but I could be wrong.

Real human people?

Like if you do a search and then follow the link from the search. Yes, real people.

I think they crawl the site, but I don't understand if/why they have a profile and whether they're real humans or not.

I've wondered that too...would be interested in finding out. Seems that they are "patched" through somehow...perhaps they do a google search and then click on the page that comes up.

No not real human people - that's why they're called bots! I think they're the web crawlers that catalog what goes on here - or maybe just key words and phrases? - for use in the search engines.

From Google: "Googlebot is Google's web crawling bot (sometimes also called a "spider"). Crawling is the process by which Googlebot discovers new and updated pages to be added to the Google index.

We use a huge set of computers to fetch (or "crawl") billions of pages on the web. Googlebot uses an algorithmic process: computer programs determine which sites to crawl, how often, and how many pages to fetch from each site."

Kenny - if you go to google and enter :At the bottom of the screen is a list of "people" who are here. There are also "bots"....

the first link you'll get is a link to your original post.

You can thank a bot for that link!

Simply put, bots crawl all over the internet collecting data/links from websites to index pages for search engine optimization. So when you go to Google and type in something like "AVC center stone" you'll see the first two pages it brings up are Pricescope. That's because these bots have picked up on these keywords used most here on Pricescope then on the following sites.

So, bots are not humans they are like little software spies doing good work?

Pretty much! They also read image names and index them and they love when you hyperlink words, it's like an extra special keyword for them to pick up on. I work for an online store and part of my job is to boost our search engine optimization.

Isn't that cheating?

No, it's making your site more accessible/searchable via search engines. My workplace has a website and made sure to list all of the counties and cities we serve (library system) so that if someone searched, for example, "kalamazoo library" they would find our site, even though kalamazoo isn't in our name.

I think that would be called "annoying" :wink2:
