What could I do with these diamonds - Reset ideas

Hello!!!

Well I'm trying to do something to cure the DSS that plagues me everyday and try and fix up/add more bling with my e-ring that i have now so i have searched through my small stash of jewels and found these. All very sentimental so would love to put them in to WG so i could wear them with or as an alternative to my e-ring. I don't care if its mix matched/doesn't really go i just need more diamonds

So my thoughts are with the small solitaire (my beautiful nanna's e-ring) id like to set it into a small bezel setting for a ring and then with the other two bands with 7 small diamonds add them to a thin band (is that possible??) with the small earrings that i have as well, so i could have a very thin/delicate eternity ring. Would that work? I am not sure how small is too small.... And with the sapphire ring id take the diamonds out of that and make another band with the princess cut diamonds, again a thin eternity band (keeping the sapphire for another project, when i know what I'd like to do with it).....

Am i thinking in terms of what i want is do-able or not really? I am totally clueless on any of the carat sizes as these rings (the antique looking ones) are from 60 years ago....

I like the way all three rings look stacked together. If you decide to take the stones out and use them for a new piece, make sure you work with someone who can give you some idea of what's possible, and who won't charge you a lot of money to remove the stones. A place in my city charges $30 per stone to remove stones from old rings. They also charge a similar amount to reset the stones in a new piece. Which is very high, in my opinion. So make sure you get an estimate of those types of costs up front. Where are you located? I'm asking because I know that Scott Schrieber has done some very nice designs using stones from customers' pieces. In my opinion, some jewelers are better at this type of repurposing than others -- it takes some imagination and creativity.

I live in Australia, small town with 3 jewellers to choose from so i went to my most trusted one yesterday, and he was quoted me $3k to reset the small rounds into a band (pave), the princess cuts into a band (channel set), and the e-ring into a solitaire bezel setting..... And if i brought in my own WG it would cost me $1,500..... Im not sure if this is steep or what, i am a little upset though as i won't be able to do it, i would rather save my $3k and put it toward a bigger stone for an upgrade....

Yes, removing and resetting stones can be expensive. In my opinion, it's wiser to save your money and put it toward a new stone, unless any of the rings have sentimental value and you want to reuse the stones for that reason.

There's a lot of (expensive) labor involved with unsetting and resetting those little stones. You can probably buy a ready-made piece with more total carat weight for a lot less than having something custom-made would cost.

Exactly what i thought! Which is disappointing as they have sentimental value and id love to be able to wear them everyday but oh well back to the drawing board!

Hi, jewellers here in Australia charge a small fortune for their work. You might be better off saving for something a bit larger and sending the ring to Whiteflash or Brian Gavin and ask them to remove the stones and use them as side stones or somehow in part of the design. If you bought a larger centre stone from them I think they would charge you considerably less to do that or a better option might be just saving that amount and purchasing something new from overseas.

I know a couple of guys that own a small shop here in Brisbane that do a lot of setting work for many of the larger stores that have reasonable prices, that said I still get a lot of my own things made in the US because it is considerably cheaper and the quality of work tends to be higher.

I like arkieb's idea of saving a bit longer and shipping to the US for something unique, perhaps with a CS centre - something that represents the person/people you inherited the rings from (Birthday/wedding day) and use these stones as graduated melee on a pave shank?? There would also be some minimal return on the price of the gold - that may help to offset the cost of unsetting and shipping...?

I have some stones from a dismantled anniversary band, as well as some loose rubies that I think one day, could become an eternity band or part of a pendant... maybe an initial pendant they could be set into? or a symbol or bird/butterfly/animal you love? or set into the outside of a locket with a pic of your nanna inside?

bella - I just had a couple things reset so I could wear them. One part is my original wedding set and the other was bezel pendant that I ended up not wearing. Now all the stones are set and I can't wait to get the new bezel pendant and my new band ring. Both are in 14k rose gold and the biggest stone in the new ring is about .33ctw and 4.1mm. The band is 5.2mm wide and very thick. I designed the layout for the diamonds in the band ring.

I am getting them reset as i don't wear gold and they aren't exactly the sturdiest rings, so it'd make more sense to get them reset so i could wear them all the time.....

I was thinking that! Do you think, with the shipping costs and the rest of it i would still come out not in front but on par with Aussie prices? I need to work on hubby more and then i could upgrade my e-ring and put all the small diamonds into a new wedding set Sigh. I can dream right?! lol

Bella - the reason I posted is mainly because the cost to reset my things above was only $550 US. He bought the gold from the original settings and I sent him a 4mm yellow gold band also. This reduced my cost by $225. Helped out a lot.

The pieces are beautiful as they are, and there is no telling if the tiny diamonds would even match up well enough to put them in another piece. If you don't like yellow gold, rhodium plate it. If a shank is thin, have it fixed. But I think the sentimental value will be totally gone forever if you remove the little stones. And as everyone has said, financially not worth it. The sapphire ring is definitely too beautiful to take apart.

Oh I totally agree with all of this - I would definitely leave these rings as is.

Are those au$? To me that seems high. They are charging 1.5k for wg and 1.5k to remove and set? How big is your Gran's diamond? I would want to set that separate, maybe in a small pendant.
