Hello all, I pulled the trigger on a j color stone. I just wanted people's opinions, what would you set that color stone in, a yellow or a white metal? I personally prefer yellow gold on my skin tone, but I also want something that looks timeless and doesn't make the diamond more tinted than it is.

I have a K that I have set in platinum, but it's a pendant (the largest in my avatar) and it's a 3 prong martini so you can't really see the metal.

For a ring, I'm not so sure I'd do a white metal. I guess it would depend on the style, but I would probably go with rose gold.
If yellow gold compliments your skin tone, there's no reason not to do it. The J will still be much whiter than the yellow gold, but in platinum, there may be times when you would see the slight tint. But again, it really depends on the design of the ring.

My j is on the high side but honestly could go in either. It was in plat for a while but that color doesn't do it for my skin so I changed it. The yellow did not stand out. It is in yellow gold now. It does not make it look more yellow. What design are you after? If yellow gold matches your skin tone def go with that, it's just a matter of if the overall design would make sense with white prongs or not - in my opinion. Mine didn't, so my prongs are yellow.

I've never subscribed to the I /J color diamonds should be in yellow gold belief. Just choose the metal that looks best on you, whether that's yellow gold, rose gold or platinum. I would do 18kt rather than 14kt however.

I love semi bezel designs so I am leaning towards that if that makes any difference.

I'd probably go with yellow gold if that was best for my skin tone. I personally love platinum, so I'd always go with that no matter what color my diamond was. Yellow gold is timeless IMO - I'd actually like to own a yellow gold ring sometime.

blueandwhiltewithyellow.jpg Here are examples of the style I like in the two shades bluestonewhitemetal.jpg

whitestonerosegold.jpg I think the rose gold is very pretty, but don't know if it will look dated after awhile/get bored of it

Bi-metal 18kt shank with platinum or white gold head would look great. Rose gold might look great. Let the stone pick. Drop it into white, yellow, and rose color mountings and see which one really makes it sing. I have an uncerted J or K diamond and yellow gold with white head was the obvious choice when I compared yg and wg. The M color diamond that I have is pale yellow but it looks great in white metals or yellow gold. I've had it set in both, over the years. I have never had opportunity to see how those two diamonds look in rose gold. But there are different colors of rose gold ranging from copper to peach depending on the alloys, too.

I think it depends on what you think looks best on you and what metals you wear most in other jewelry. I prefer platinum for my e-ring and band because that's neutral to me, so I can wear any kind of other jewelry. My original set was yg because it was popular at the time I got engaged, but I like white metals more on me and just wear other color metals on occasion. The yellow and rose gold tend to go in and out of style more, but certainly there are many people who wear yellow gold and do so regardless of what's popular at any specific time. I do prefer platinum since it is really a white metal, unless you go with that Stuller X1 (or whatever it is called) which is white gold and doesn't have to ever be plated. I like 18k yellow gold. I think a J color diamond is fine in either one.

FWIW, for a half-bezel style for a J-color stone, I'd go with a white metal head and yellow gold shank...

You like that look of a thin sliver of white half bezel on a semi bezel?
:knockout:

^ well, you're assuming the bezel would be fine; not all bezels are thin/fine.

And, yes, since you are asking, me personally, I'd much prefer a J-color diamond to be set in white metal of any thickness, as opposed to having it set in any yellow metal.

Second @Niel.

There is no colour to play with in these grades.

Pick the metal colour that best suits your skin colour best. You'll enjoy the piece more that way. In regards to picking either colour metal because of the J stone itself, again, stick with what you like most. I've had several J's & all were set in either platinum or white gold without any issue regarding tint. Some stones had fluoro & some did not, but none were overtly tinted in their white settings. White metals also suit my skin tone best which is why I chose white metals.

I just think those two tone bezels are clunky and unattractive. Whatever your preference just pick a lane lol

Ps Neil, I love that yellow gold setting you posted.

I love semi bezels. In fact my e-ring is a Sholdt semi bezel in platinum, so I'm all about the thin semis .. but I also not a fan of two tone bezels, I think it distracts from the actual ring too much.

Love the one you posted above. Think it would look great in white or yellow. If I went with that setting, I would get what looked best with my skin tone.
Are you considering a 3 stone too?

ideally yes I want to make a 3 stone ring, that is beautiful, but on a budget. If the thing I'm ordering works out I will have the stones, but need a setting. I'm willing to wait on the setting until I settle what I am looking for. I already have a couple 18K yellow rings, so I don't mind either a 14K yellow, or 14K white ring (platinum out of price range).

I recently had a lower colour (M, as graded by GSL in Australia, not AGS/GSL) diamond set in un-plated 18k white gold, on the recommendation of my jeweller (Alistair Kelsey). The prongs were rhodium plated. I thought this paired quite well with the colour/tint of the stone. I haven't seen much platinum jewellery in person, but it appeared similar to me in colour. Until Alistair recommended it, I hadn't even thought about this as an option, so perhaps something you might want to consider!

Cheers,
SC

yes I had an unplated 18k white gold ring (now sold) with a j color stone and it was very complementary. All I could see was the fire coming off the stone.
I'm just trying to find a pretty but reasonable in cost idea for a 3 stone setting. If anyone knows of one, let me know. The dimensions of the side stones are 5.1 mm and two approximately 4.1 mm stones. ETA most likely due to budgeting reasons, probably won't get to this project until Feb.
