What are your thoughts on how government is handling COVID-19

Our Premier (equivalent of your governors) announced that home visits will be legal from Friday onwards.

MY SISTER CAN COME AND STAY OVER AGAIN!!!!!!

I'm pretty thrilled and I think it's a smart call on her part. Let the people have a little reward but it's not a major relaxation of the rules.

Australia also launched it's virus tracking app.

Will be interesting to see if we still keep this thing under control.

I do think they are doing the right thing. Nothing to drastic but enough to make people feel like we're heading towards some form of improvement and normalcy.

For all the people that keep beating the COVID-19 is no worse than seasonal flu drum, these are the statistics I could find;

New York had 4,749 deaths as a result of influenza and pneumonia in 2018, according to the Centers for Disease Control (statistics for 2019 were not available). The New York City Department of Health said that roughly 2,000 of those deaths happen within the five boroughs every year.

If divided equally over the course of a year, slightly under 400 New Yorkers died each month in 2018 from the flu or pneumonia, around 167 of whom were in the city. It is consistently one of the top five causes of death in the state and NYC.

By comparison so far New York is up to around 22,600 deaths that have been registered from COVID - 19, but it is thought that several thousand more that have died from heart attacks and other things at home are a product of the disease directly causing their deaths, but they were not registered as such. So at a guess it would be safe to say around 23,000 people at least have died from COVID-19 or complications from it in New York so far.

New York - 4,749 (2018 flu) versus 23,000+ (so far COVID-19 2020).

The U.S. saw just over 59,000 flu deaths in 2018 which was a year that had a larger number of deaths than previous years. So that was a really "bad" flu year in the US.

So far the death toll of registered deaths from COVID - 19 is 56,800 and I'd guess it has killed a few thousand more, that were not officially registered, so lets call it 57,000 deaths so far across the US.

So in 2018 the flu killed 59,000 Americans that whole year, so far in two months COVID - 19 has killed at least 57,000+.

It doesn't take a genius to see that COVID - 19 is not simply "like" seasonal flu....

China threatening to boycott us for wanting an investigation into the virus

Seems like they want to bully the world into shutting up about this.

Oh De blasio. Have I mentioned what a hypocrite he is? Not just now but always.

Quarantine for thee but not for me...

And nepotism alive and strong in his world. Gave his wife a top position yet again. SMH.

Yeah... also feel free to ask any clinician that has worked on a covid unit. That’s right, they’ve had to cohort to whole units. Not something we typically do with the flu.. the clinical course is different, the way we care for these patients is different, this is not the flu.

Not directly related to the goverment but more by the state? Although we are now required to wear masks when going out to the store, I was shocked to see so many removing their masks when in the store. They would have it down below their noses, so what's the point of wearing the masks in the first place? :angryfire:

That's the CCP for ya. And the left wing media in our country still side with China b/c Trump opposes China.

So now it is not really safe to stay at home?

I interpret this as follows. People going to work are taking necessary and proper precautions to protect themselves. People who are for the most part SIP perhaps aren’t taking all necessary precautions when walking outside and/or when food shopping.

Because let’s face it. They’re getting the virus from somewhere. They’re coming into contact with it and it’s getting into either their mouth, nose or eyes.

A personal valet to President Trump has tested positive for Coronavirus. The valet exhibited symptoms yesterday.
This aide works closely with the President. Trump needs to be in quarantine for the next two weeks. he needs to wear a mask. it will be interesting to see if the President does the right thing.

The White House shelved the CDC guidelines on how to reopen the US. WTH!

And in his wisdom Trump still refuses to wear a mask for the most part. And nor it seems, do his valets. One of whom has tested positive for Coronavirus.

"...the White House has not enforced strict social distancing guidelines for staffers and few people inside the building wear masks during the day."

"...a White House official told CNN that Oval Office valets have not been wearing their masks."

I. CAN'T. EVEN. :angryfire:

GOVERNORS of both parties are saying it's a good thing we spent $660 MILLION on field hospitals that are generally empty? I'd much rather it went to unemployment agencies or PPP, than wasting the money and resources on this.

How could it possibly cost $50-100mil to setup one of these field hospitals that we're seeing in the article?!

SUNY Stony Brook cost $155.5 million dollars with 0 patients, and SUNY Old Westbury cost $118.5 million dollars with 0 patients! The only field hospital that's functioning is at Javits Center and cost only $11.4 million dollars.

When $HIT happens, it's the private contractors who are making bank, while who knows how much people's lives could have been improved if the money was spent correctly.

The CCP are so full of BS!! ...But the left wing media still side with the CCP rather than Trump. ..:wall:

What left wing media is siding with China? I do not understand how any rational person can believe anything Trump says. He lies everyday. He lies during a news conference denying something we just heard him say. Right now there is NO proof China created the virus in a lab and accidentally or purposefully released it. I have seen no "fake news" outlets side with China saying they were truthful during the beginning of the outbreak.

No proof b/c the CCP don't allow outside inspectors inside their lab..See what I mean by the left is defending China? People like you.

Definitely over blown costs but if they were needed the government would be criticized for not having them. Healthcare is expensive. It'd be interesting to see if the first two builds had different requirements e.g ICU and setups, they're clear outliers compared to the costs of the other projects. Definitely needs to be an audit of the tender process.

isolation rooms and or isolation wards would cost 10x+ more than normal rooms in a field hospital but would be suited to care for covid patients where normal ones are not.
Some of them the plan was for all regular patients to go to the field hospitals and the give the regular hospitals entirely over to covid others were being built to care for covid patients.

The cost of getting portable imaging and lab equipment and set it up is also very high.

At the time they set this in motion there was no way to tell if it was going to be needed 100%. We as a nation were lucky they were not needed.
If our luck does not hold they may be needed yet as things are opened up.
History has shown that the second wave of a disease is often much worse than the first.

Not accepting every accisation without proof is not the same as defending China. By your logic, every conspiracy theory ever created is true because no one can ever obtain proof when those in power want to hide stuff.

It's ridiculous how you try to defend Trump, by deflecting to CCP.

In my book, CCP=liars and Trump=liar; NOT mutually exclusive. As I've said before, I see Trump's actions as very similar to those of lying politicians in the CCP. So it's funny to me how you will extol one and denounce the other. The way you're going about defending Trump is completely nuts.

Silver lining to how angry I am about Trumps leadership during covid is that I no longer have any Trump supporting friends or acquaintances in my life or social media circles. Nope. Done being patient and empathetic when they’re posting nonsense on the daily that has blatant disregard and disrespect for other people’s lives, science, and healthcare workers. I don’t need that kind of abuse in my life. Bye and good riddance.

OK so on the UK our 'stay at home to save lives' message from the Government has changed. It is now:

The PM speech to the nation can be found online but mostly people are extremely confused being told to go back to work and avoid public transport. Images from London this morning of commuters packed in like sardines with no face masks.

Below are somewhat humorous adaptations of the Government's message but reflect peoples confusion!

@Niffler75 You guys are being sent back to work??? Even the non essentials?

I thought you guys were being hit like the plague at the moment! Have things improved?

Things are improving here, yes, but not to that degree. Restaurants & bars are not going to be opening this side of December - they've already made that clear. The message from Boris last night was a nightmare, and he is due to offer clarity later today.

The upshot was, if you cannot work from home & it is safe for you to return, then you can return as long a safe provisions & social distancing are in place. So a self employed electrician etc, who might work alone & need to get back to earning an income.

Schools are still closed & the rest of us are still working form home or staying at home completely, so for my family nothing has changed this week.
