What are your thoughts on how government is handling COVID-19

@redwood66 I don't think it would change a racist but I don't think we need to give the additional fodder to throw at minorities.

My son is in NYC, it scares the hell out of me, I hear you. Most of my family is dead except my youngest bro who's mentally ill and in the VA system and that worries me more than my son, I can't go to San Diego to help him. My brother has no one in SD to help him except the VA. We all feel what you feel and that is why altho we debate no one wishes anyone to be hurt, at least I know you and I don't, and I'm sure everyone we know here is the same.

peace.

Very badly. I think Trump’s comments have given people an excuse to act out on their racist thoughts. I was harassed by a Caucasian man while running. “Chinese virus,” he commented while I ran by. I pointed out that I wasn’t from China, was born and raised in the US, and he was trying to push people out of a land his ancestors stole. He swore at me but couldn’t refute that.

Ironically, my parents are from Taiwan, where the virus is best contained.:roll2: Maybe he should be looking at that country’s procedures instead of spreading hate, hmm?

@strawrose he should count his lucky stars that you didn’t kick his butt! I’m sorry you had to deal with that racist arse.

What an A hole. :x2
I'm sorry you are dealing with this cra*. Ignorant a**h***

Keep running, keep your head up high, you are an American. POS like that guy are not even gum on your shoe. I'm so glad your parents emigrated here, America is always better because of our immigrant population, 2 generations back my great grandfather was starving in Ireland, picked up and came here, I am so glad he did. Thank your parents for me! they raised a strong woman.

I am so outraged at so much right now that if I start expressing how angry this makes me I am going to start coughing!!

Not only do I support you, but my feeling of the need to get Trump and anyone who supported him out of office grows every day. And that is saying a lot, because I was cheer leading Joe Biden's primary wins for the simple reason that I thought he could defeat Trump (as so mmany people did). I never thought I would live to see the day when a tinpot dictator was actually elected in the United States.

Deb.. If Trump was a dictator most of the PSers here would be executed by now.

My parents live under dictator Mao. The stories they told me would make you weep for days. Mao's Communist Party of China established in 1949 the same yr my brother was born then my sister was born two yrs later in 1951. They didn't have S**T to eat under communist Mao.

So everytime when the far left media side with communist China I get all Piss Off. Let's call it the "Trump virus" just to satisfy the left wingers.

Cool. My partner just bought me mace because I walk to work at the hospital. I don’t want to bring mace into a hospital!?

Happy to say my local government is not engaging in such nonsense.

I'm speechless when confronted with this much stupidity. I truly am.

I'm sorry you're feeling unsafe, @MakingTheGrade

Thank you for your continued dedication to making this a healthier, safer place for everyone!

It is SO interesting to me. I see these racist stories on Pricescope (during the ‘16 election an now) but my Chinese husband NEVER experiences racism. Literally never. We live in a VERY conservative area, conservative Trump supporting people who are supposedly racist make up around 60% of the pop and he never even gets weird looks whether he is alone or with me. We also go camping to the mountains (rednecks galore), same thing. Just a thought I have been wanting to express for a looooong time.

Strawrose, I'm very sorry this happened to you. It sucks and you are absolutely right. But, I feel compelled to say the same thing to you I say to my husband when he gets pissed off at idiot drivers: Do not engage. You are in America, land of Nuts with Guns and Ammo. Stay safe.

This is the way Jews felt. This is the way the Irish felt under British rule. I'm sure native north americans feel the same way about europeans. When I was in Russia our tour guide took us to a new, HUGE supermarket just opened, she was so proud, it was teeny compared to my grocery store in my small upstate NY town in the 60s, she said food was finally plentiful (this was in 2012), EVERY immigrant who came here came to escape their countries leader. Britain has changed, Germany has changed, you are an American your parents if still here are Americans. The Chinese did a much BETTER job at controlling the virus, so be it, their technique will not work here... My great grandparents did not sh-- to eat in the 1840s in Ireland, the British did little to nothing to help, 1 million died, 1 million left, Ireland has never recovered from the loss of so many Irish, I heard stories about death, destruction, pain and sorrow from my grandmother by way of my grandfather who died b4 I was born but his parents came here to find life and food. We have allll been through pain to reach America.

Mao is dead, the Chinese are eating as far as I know. Ireland is huge for vacationing Americans etc. Times change, we must.

I live in a conservative Trump apologist area and my neighbors are never explicitly racist towards people they deem their "equals." Asian, Black, Muslim, whatever...professional is fine, love that guy/gal, love their family - they blend in well and are "one of us."

Sadly, it all changes when they talk about "others" they consider lesser in generalities. Then it's lazy, dirty, immigrants. Or immigrants taking our jobs! (Schrodinger's immigrant: both too lazy to work and also stealing your job.) Those Chinese will eat any freaky sh*t, do those Indians realize the spice smell never leaves them?, can't stand seeing women cover up like that - this isn't Afghanistan! This is the crap I hear from them routinely and If you don't, I'm glad for you.

Great and lucky you! but that doesn't mean others are not experiencing backlash that is the way it works unfortunately. I was called white trash growing up but not after I left my home town. And racism against asians was never overt but is becoming so now. And I am thrilled you live in progressive Trump country, if only the rest of the country were so lucky.

obviously anecdotal as your story is also.

Again I don't think your husband should experience ANY racist activity anywhere in the US. period.

When I was a kid if a Black person walked through my town I swear to God people would have stopped, I never saw a black person till I was at least 7 or 8. My town was totally white and in those days Italians were looked way way down on.. Move more Chinese families into your area and see what happens, it's human nature, white flight in the 50s and 60s.. etc.

It isn’t a matter of where we live or equals. We literally take our camper to redneck towns, all the time, from FL to KY and spend anywhere from days to weeks there, and not only never received dirty looks but friendliness. If we have trouble with something, the “rednecks” are there to help expecting nothing in return. Flat tire, backing into our camping spot, trying to find a decent restaurant....anything at all, they have always treated us with respect.
And, we are a mixed race couple, where you would think they would have more disgust (especially since people joke with me that I must be a “super model” and it is pretty obvious my husband makes more money than these people) but they don’t. You can twist things to make it look like the majority of conservatives are racist all you want but I really would not be surprised if many of these racist attacks are done by people who vote Dem. Don’t even get me started on the weird obsession the children who come from liberal families have on my son’s race, not thekids who come from conservative parents, the liberal parents. It’s actually bizarre, borderline “racist”.

Congratulations?
I never really understand the “well it doesn’t happen here” comment. Is the intent to say not every conservative person is racist? Because certainly I agree. My personal experience of comments in poor taste don’t seem to correlate to political party. In fact most are probably democratic voters since I live in an urban city that strongly voted blue so statistically that’s most likely.

Is it because you’re genuinely curious as to why your lived experience seems different than others? Because there can be many factors to that. Theres a long and interesting history in America with east Asian immigrants and a conscious effort to promote them as a “model minority” during the civil rights movement has led to some very interesting racial dynamics.

But the topic of this thread was our thoughts on government leadership regarding covid. And I don’t think government officials making comments that can foment xenophobia is appropriate. I mean I never thing it’s appropriate but right now people need to be kind and support one another.

I don’t have time to go back and forth or read the rare instance of possible racism in these articles. I just know that I was bullied hard in school. I was a white girl 5’10” with long blonde hair and green eyes. What do I blame it on then?
I truly think some people hate just to hate and they might useRace/Religion/sex in their language but I was nearly beat up by somegirls in high school. They hated me for being??? Tall, thin? That is what they harassed me for. Does that mean they are heightist, they just hate tall people? No, they just wanted a reason to rate someone and it was me.
I am dropping this because I don’t have the time.
I just know I feel completely safe broken down the side of the road in redneck towns, not so much in some areas of the country.
Have a great day.
Editing to add: There is racism in the US, just not as common as you would think.

You're right no one ever should. I live in what ignorant people think is the land of white supremacy but they have no actual idea what goes on here other than what they read in papers 20 years ago which was also anecdotal. I don't see it here and the minorities who live here don't tell me they experience it. And I know plenty of them, both workers and successful business owners. I have never thought or said any of the things Maria posted but have been outright called a racist on this very forum. So forgive me if I don't use PS as my "racism in the US" thermometer. One can always find evidence of racism because racists exist and they always will.

@JrJ You’re not alone in your observations. I’m puzzled at these alleged incidents as well, especially when - on PS - they keep getting blamed on/tied to conservatives/Trump/‘rednecks’, yet the alleged incidents largely appear to stem from more predominantly liberal-leaning environments. The Wikipedia link tekate posted above cites almost all of those recent incidents in the U.S. happening in NY & CA - VERY ‘blue’ states ... so maybe the complaints should be redirected at the leadership in those areas ... maybe the leadership in those cities/states is in need of replacing vs. re-election.

Frankly, after three non-stop years of people blaming an entire group for the actions of one or two guilty parties and people labeling something ‘racism’ - especially in the absence of any legit crime/offense (and even worse when it goes unreported to authorities) - that behavior is not helping or ‘drawing attention to a problem’ ... it just dilutes legit acts of racism. Also, those chalking up racism to conservatives/republicans or - gasp - Trump voters are doing the EXACT SAME THING they’re accusing that group of doing right now. And personally, I’m unapologetically done losing sleep over what any hypocrite thinks/says about anything these days.

I absolutely do not condone legitimate acts of racism by anyone toward anyone; and I hope the a-holes in the world who commit such crimes are reported & dealt with appropriately. But posting about it on a jewelry forum or social media doesn’t solve the problem; it needs to be reported to authorities so it can be dealt with and punished accordingly.

MTG, my point is that most of these racist attacks seem to happen in more “liberal” areas. I think it is quite interesting.
I am certainly not the one who brought up race in this thread, I was just responding to it.

I did handle it better than another person, who fake coughed at them. I will take your advice to heart though and perhaps even buy a stun gun if violence is unavoidable.

Good for you? I was also bullied in high school for non-racial reasons. It happens to a lot of people. Unfortunately, having racism on TOP of that doesn’t make it better. I just wonder what the purpose of downplaying other peoples’ experience is for? Just because you never saw it, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Take a good look at history of how the US treated Asian Americans.

Liberal areas aren’t all full of liberals. They’re just the majority. There are plenty of Republicans where I live and I know plenty of them. Even if they were democrat, they were using Trump’s words.

You missed the point.
Your "good for you" doesn't even make sense. I was pointing out that if someone attacks you for something and then blurts out a racial doesn't mean it was always racial to begin with. Just like I highly doubt that I was attacked (literally physically attacked) because I am tall or skinny.
The chance that it was a conservative that attacked you seems very unlikely to people like Red, TMT and me who live in very conservative areas and know many more conservatives than any of you, and know how they truly tend to be.
The person who attacked you was probably severely mentally ill. Period.

It may be how we perceive such situations and what level of importance one places on the need to call attention to it or blame it on someone. I was called a cracker b*tch and cracker ho, and things in Spanish, for years but it would never have occurred to me post about it because I knew that the ignorant idiots using the racial slurs were just that. Ignorant. I certainly wouldn't have blamed their ignorant acts on someone else or a whole group of people. Racist attacks that are criminal and harm people should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

It's the blaming a whole group of people for the acts of individuals that irks the crap out of me. People are individuals.

Their will always be racism in our world but to say most Trump supporters are racist is wrong.

And apparently got the results as he was swimming. Why the hell would you go swimming and possibly infect others if you had reason to be tested?

I wondered the same thing. Selfish entitled people who think of no one other than themselves. We have heard repeatedly the past week that we need to slow down the curve. Self isolating apparently is for others when it comes to some people.

Shame on him.

Did you really just try to tell Strawrose that the racial slur that man said to her wasn’t necessarily an act of racism? And that conservative Trump supporters are good people so racists must just be Democrats and/or mentally ill?

This kind of half-baked nonsense is why racism persists and it won’t go away.

By the way, Richard Spencer (neo-Nazi, white supremacist) dated Asian women.
