eta @Maria D -the reason I quoted you-yes! I think they think it's grass or something. My dear Siamese I had until months shy of 20 did this. There could be one patch of carpet in a sea of hardwood and she would seek it out.
There's a theory that the reason cats look for a carpeted area is because the force of vomiting causes them to slide backwards. Carpet gives them something to grip - 'cause who wants to be sliding around while puking?

My neighbor's cat moved in with us (with her permission) last year and he's the first cat (out of many) that I've had who politely pukes on tile. He's a smart one - back legs on the carpet under the kitchen table for stability, vomit on the tile for easier clean-up.
