I was also thinking of getting them this scratching post, $16.99
The couch corner scratching post is a great idea. I haven''t seen one of those before. Be sure to get one for EVERY couch/chair corner. Cats tend to be naughty and will just go to the next corner if one is covered up.

You can get double-sided tape that clings onto furniture and that''ll keep your cats from scratching the fabric up. We used that for a few years. It works, but looks weird - clear tape stuck all the place! Oh, and aluminum foil works, as well, if you''re interested in a more ''modern look.'' My friend wrapped it around a planter box her cats were scredding up.

Oh I hadn''t heard about the aluminum foil - thanks so much MC! I think I''ll do an upright scratcher - didn''t think it through, since that will be in the bedroom, not the living room.

So I''ve been poring over the past cat food threads, and I think I''m going to buy:

1) Eagle Pack Holistic Select, 16 lb bag, Chicken & Rice (this is what they''re being fed now)

2) Innova EVO Cat & Kitten Dry food, 15 lb bag - I''ll start mixing in this with the Eagle Pack, and later move entirely to Innova Evo

3) Innova EVO 95% Chicken and Turkey wet food - give this to them either every night or every other night

Any other recommendations or suggestions? I want to be sure to feed them a high quality food but I want them to have variety as well. Thanks!

I have my cat on an all natural raw diet. I make his food for him at home. It's a simple recipe and very easy to do. Best of all, HE LOVES IT! The company I use for the formulas is Instincts TC.

I buy the kind that already has the liver powder included. The great thing about this mix is they did all the calculating/measuring/balancing of all the required nutrients and minerals they need. All I have to do is add the raw meat. I use ground turkey and ground chicken. I mix it up and freeze it in ice cube trays (suggested on their website). Once frozen, I dump the cubes into large freezer bags. I have a tray for his food and I put one serving in (4 cubes, 1/2 cup per his weight) in the fridge at dinner time so that it's completely unfrozen for dinner the next day.

Another thing we did with our boy that we're so grateful we did was toilet train our cat. Yes, no more litter box! It took us over a year to get him to do it (he was 6 when we started, he'd been on a litter his whole life so he was very stubborn). I'd read people had the best results when starting with kittens (training them in as little as 2 weeks!) as they just take it as 'this is how it is'. The system we used was the Litter Kwitter. You can read about the transition from litter to toilet, floor to toilet height etc. It was about $60 for the kit and in the long run, well worth the money as we never have to buy litter, boxes, scoopers, or smell a box every again. If you're not into seeing cat mess in the toilet when you go to use the bathroom, you can put an auto flusher on the toilet set to flush every few hours, or motion sensored to flush itself 60 seconds after motions stops (don't want it going off while kitty is still doing his business! May scare the crap out of him and make him fear his potty place!) Something to think about, if we ever got another cat, it would be baby so we could do this from the get go. I didn't think the box would bother me, but it really did, especially in a small apartment.

Did you ever decide on food for your new babies?

Hi Audball!

I''m so sorry I missed your first post on food. It was so sweet of you to take the time to write it out - and I really really appreciate all the great advice!

I''m a little hesitant about raw food at the moment...and I''ll be keeping them on Eagle Pack for a while since that''s what they''re eating at the breeder''s. I was originally thinking of moving them over to Innova EVO soon after, but now I''m reading that it''s not the greatest for kittens, so I''m trying to figure out which food might be the best to transition them to. Maybe Wellness Core?

I switched my boys about a month ago when you were asking about food. I put them on regular Innova. I get it at a specialty pet food store and they are very knowledgeable. Although they have Innova for kittens they did not have it at the store since the regular Innova is fine for both kittens and cats - it says it on the bag and the very helpful sales person told me that while they don''t carry the kitten food for that reason I could order it if I wanted to. I bought the regular Innova and the difference in the shine in their coats was noticeable rather quickly! I also bought the Innova wet food as they really enjoy their wet food! It only comes in one flavor, but so far no complaints out of them!

My older kitty that was diabetic and died earlier this year was on the Innova Evo. If I recall correctly the main difference is more protein. Maybe I should check into it again, but I think you will do fine with the regular Innova. How much longer until the "grand arrival!"

Have you looked into Avoderm cat food? My cat had skin problems for years (she''s over 16 now) and the problem went away with that food.

It''s sold at most non-chain pet stores (not sold at Petco or Petsmart), but most other shops. I get it at a local retailer who has just a couple locations. The small bag is $11 and the medium is around $18.

Those bowls are so perfect. I share your disdain for overpriced kitty/dog bowls.

BEG - I can''t wait to see your new furbabys! DH and I might be getting a Sphynx in the next few months and this thread is fantastic! I have this huge pet hair issue. It drives me crazy. And they might work better for DH''s allergies, since I think he''s allergic to the hair. We''re going to go and do a snuggle test with a breeder to find out. So all the info here is invaluable!

Yay! I feel for your DH - I''m allergic to cats, lol. I''m stocking up on Zyrtec in the next few weeks. Have you started looking yet? Kitten or adult?
If we do it, it will be an adult. There is a breeder in our area that has 2 adults available. We''re going to go in for a snuggle test and go from there! DH should know pretty quickly if he can handle it or not.

Gecko, for the record both AmberGretchen and I have three cats (mixed breeds and rescues all) and we are both allergic to cats. But you get used to your own cat''s allergens. My only problem is with other people''s cats and when I''ve been away from mine for more than a week. Then I need Zyrtec for about 2 weeks to ''break me in'' again.

I do have an allergic reaction to Lucy, because I only spend a couple of hours with her a3 days a week in her room (John is in the 4 days a week, we trade off). But it''s easily controlled by benadryl or zyrtec and if she was integrated (the little monster), I know my sensitivity to her would go away because she''d be everywhere in the house, and I''d have constant exposure to her.

Yeah, unfortunately Adam''s allergic to air.

He''s already on Zyrtec 24/7. Some cats drive him crazy, others he can handle no problem. Thus the snuggle test.

The Sphynx concept is due more to my issue with hair all over the world than any allergy concerns.

Although the dear man did tell me last night he''s get allergy shots for me so we could have a cat.

We might be buying a house really soon, so any kitty additions will have to wait until we sort that all out!
