I have a full cat at Petsmart, and I''m going to buy a ton of stuff probably tomorrow. I''m just afraid that as soon as I hit Confirm Payment, I''ll remember something I needed to buy. So far I have:

Cat bed
Cat tree
Scratching post
Nail clippers
Two stainless steel bowls for food
A water fountain
A placemat for the bowls
Automatic litter box
Pet stain and odor remover
Bitter Apple-like (bad tasting) training aid
Toys (feather wand, soft balls, laser light, one of those circles with a ball the cats bat around, with a scratching pad on top)

This is for two rambunctious kittens who will be home with me in a month!!
1.gif

Is there anything else I should get? Any advice on transitioning two new kittens (littermates) to their new home?

Also, I don''t have food on this list because I need to buy it elsewhere - the kittens are on Eagle Pack at the breeders, and I''m keeping them on that for a while. I''ll probably transition them to Avoderm or something similar as they get older.

Thanks!!

Hey BEG!

Congrats again on your new furbabies!!! Here are my thoughts

Cat bed: in my experience, while the theory of cats having beds is lovely, they rarely sleep in them. I''ve tried and tried to get mine to and they just wont. I had a previous cat who loved his bed, it was like a cave. I would try and find something that''s enclosed so they feel secure and suggly. I don''t know that this is something you NEED right now.

Cat tree: You definitely want to train the gatos to use the tree/scratching post ASAP, but they might not get into it right away. You want one that they''ll be able to stretch up on to scratch, so it should be pretty tall. Oh, and usually trees have scratching posts built in, so there''s no need to get both unless you want a post in another room.

Scratching post: see above

Nail clippers: These are essential and trimming cat claws is really easy. Make sure you handle the kittens paws, working the claws in and out of their sheaths regularly so they get used to you manipulating them.

Two stainless steel bowls for food

A water fountain: Not exactly necessary, but I understand the appeal. This is on my list of things to get for my gatos as well.

A placemat for the bowls: I highly recommend this, cats are PIGS!

Automatic litter box: Train the kittens on this ASAP. I bought one when my cat was about 2, and he FREAKED OUT. Wasted $100.

Pet stain and odor remover: kittens are not like puppies, you most likely wont have any accidents, but this is still a good thing to have

Bitter Apple-like (bad tasting) training aid: is this for chewing? I think you might have a bigger issue with scratch training, which the post/tree will help. You also might want to get some aversion spray or tape to use on your couches.

Toys (feather wand, soft balls, laser light, one of those circles with a ball the cats bat around, with a scratching pad on top): My cats'' favorite toy is a mouse on an elastic string that clips to the top of the door. Hours of endless enjoyment for $7. The mice get lost, check under your fridge if they suddenly all disappear. Feather wands are great too.

One thing I didn''t see is cat/kitten calming stuff. I can''t think of the name of it, but it comes in a diffuser you plug in, a spray, drops for the cat''s water and collars. It''s a supplement that calms the cats and helps with stress and anxiety. Some people swear by it, but it''s really expensive.

Other than that I can''t think of anything you''re missing here.

Can''t wait to see pics of the babies!!

Wow! I dont have anything to add to your list but I am sooo excited for you! I'm thinking about getting another
cat. Dont know that the hubby thinks about it though. I'm afraid to ask because he might say No. If I just show
up with one then...how can he resist??? Right???
25.gif

I'm sure you will provide us with lots of pics when you get them! I'm so jealous!
21.gif

EDIT - I was just thinking that maybe you could take a small blanket or towel and rub it on there Mommy cat to
take home with you. They might find the smell comforting.

Hi BEG! I bet you''re really getting excited - I can''t wait to see more pictures of your boys!

I would also recommend getting a regular water dish - one of our loves the fountain and the other prefers to drink out of a bowl (of course sometimes the water bowl becomes a fun toy - they go through phases where they put their feet in and splash the water out! Bengals in particular do love the fountain!

Not sure what kind of cat bed you got them - we got ours three different ones and if I can figure out how to post the link from PetSmart I can show you what my kittens like the best. One of the beds that my husband insisted on buying is way too big! They really like to be in small spaces especially when they are little. They actually collapse the top of one of their beds (it''s actually a "kitty hut") because they like to feel secure. Now that they''re older, they actually drag it around to different spots of the house. They like to redecorate! The other one they really love is actually a really fluffy dog bed.

Hudson Hawk is right - more than likely your kittens won''t have any accidents. But our breeder suggests keeping them enclosed in a small room for the first few days for a few reasons - one is to allow them to get used to their surroundings and the other is (depending on the size of your house) they may go off exploring and all of a sudden have to go and not make it to the box in time. Although that never happened with us. We slowly exposed them to different areas of the house.

I will try to post the link to the kitty hut and fluffy bed, but if I can''t I do have some pictures of them in each and they were both purchased at Pet Smart! Hope this helps!

Just thought of something else - you should purchase extra filters for the water fountain so that you have them on hand. I just ran out and hubby is annoyed at me!

I also want to thank you about asking about what everyone was feeding their kitties about a month ago. I decided to switch my boys to Innova and their coats are soooo much shinier!

hmm I honestly don''t know because it''s been ages since I''ve had a kittah.
But I will say congrats and that time has flew...only a month eh!?

Nail clippers are a waste of money unless you plan to clip every day. I tried the clippers and right after primping my cats, they'd run right over to the scatching post and sharpen them back up. If you do clip, it's very important to look for the red vein/nerve in the nail. If you clip that, it'll bleed and hurt the kittens.

You may also need a litter box scooper incase the automated cleaner box isn't up to what it claims.

ETA - I also think the cat bed is probably not a good purchase - you cannot control where the kittens will sleep. Most pick their own spots regardless of what fluffy little comfortable settings you provide.

Congrats on the new kitties!!!!

If the automatic litterbox doesn''t go over well:

Try a rolling litterbox

Feliway is a spray that keeps cats from spraying/scratching.

The calming stuff is Bachs Rescue Remedy. There are other ones, but this is the one I like the most.

One thing I didn''t see which I think is super imperative are breakaway collars and tags that have their name, your name, and your phone number in case they dart out.

Oh yeah and I agree about the cat beds. Older cats usually like them because it''s easier on their joints that jumping up on the couch/bed/etc.

Cats sleep in the oddest places. I have one next to me on the sofa right now, one on a chair that is entirely too small for him, and one sprawled out spread eagle asleep on the kitchen floor. They make no sense.

This is a great idea for any new furbaby, feline or canine. Ask the breeder if they will let you have something from the bed where Mommy and all the kids slept. I know some dog breeders that cut up the bed mat and send a piece of it home with each young'un. If this isn't standard practice for them, ask them if you can give them an old towel to place in the bedding area for a week or so before you take the kitties home.

Totally agree with the others that a cat bed is probably a waste of money.

Cat bed-- something small snuggly and soft. Preferably enclosed. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751163 seems like a good choice.
Cat tree too soon.
Scratching post Try this instead. Haven't met a cat yet who disliked it. http://www.amazon.com/Scratch-Lounge/dp/B00115EY0U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1250135292&sr=8-1

Nail clippers
Two stainless steel bowls for food -- I like porcelien small human bowls. Cheaper, you can buy multiples.
A water fountain be careful can cause chin acne.
A placemat for the bowls it's a nice theory.
Automatic litter box Unless kitten is used to this might totally freak it out. I'd just get a small scoopable pan to start.
Pet stain and odor remover They don't make much mess, but always nice to have.
Bitter Apple-like (bad tasting) training aid NO. Use positive reinforcement. And it's only good for licking behavior.
Toys (feather wand, soft balls, laser light, one of those circles with a ball the cats bat around, with a scratching pad on top) small fur mice are nice too.

This is for two rambunctious kittens who will be home with me in a month!!

Additional stuff... clorox wipes. Seriously. You'll thank me.

First thing you do is set the house up. Second thing you do is take the cats out, one by one. Place them in the litter box first thing. Let them sniff around and walk out on their own. THEN after they've each done this take them to thier bowls and show them where those are. Spray their beds with Feladie it has nice pheromones that will make them take to it, or at least more likely to make them take to it.

Wow, thanks Hudson!

I''m a little torn on the beds...I was planning on getting one for now, since they''re small and they''ll both fit, but despite BF''s protests, I have a feeling they''ll be bunking with us on the bed
3.gif

definitely getting a cat tree, although I wanted the scratching post for the bedroom, so they have a place to scratch in pretty much every room they''ll be spending most of their time in.

I''ll definitely have to check out the calming stuff - and I was also thinking of getting some cushions (though I''ll get cheaper ones from Walmart or something) to put on our windowsills if they end up spending a lot of time there.

Hehe I''m all about showing up with one! Though I went with the "wear him down for a year" route
3.gif
It apparently worked, since we went from no kittens, to one kitten, to two! I get them in a few weeks - I''m SO excited!

That is such a great idea about the small blanket - I will definitely ask my breeder! Thanks!

Both of my cats LOVED cat beds. It was so odd, because my family cats never cared about them.

I got the "Cat attract" one at Petsmart and she loved that thing. It looked terrible though!

Can''t wait to see more pics of your babies!

Also, carriers? I might have missed that above but a definite necessity.

So fun. I remember doing that initial big purchase for my puppy last summer. The anticipation is wonderful!

Really? I''m a little afraid of clipping the kittens'' nails - my mom clips our Chihuahua''s (though he HATES it) but I''ve never done it. I read (probably from you wise ladies on PS) that sometimes you don''t need to clip if the cats have plenty of scratching posts/surfaces to wear their nails down on.

Added the scooper - good call and thanks!

The kittens are coming with a cat carrier since they''re being flown to me from Florida. I''ll eventually have to get another once they get too big for them to be housed in the same carrier, but for now, I think I should be good?

I''ll definitely ask my breeder - it''s a great idea, and if it will help make the transition for them easier, it''s a great idea. Thanks!

I have a full cat at Petsmart, and I''m going to buy a ton of stuff probably tomorrow. I''m just afraid that as soon as I hit Confirm Payment, I''ll remember something I needed to buy. So far I have:

Cat bed-- something small snuggly and soft. Preferably enclosed. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751163 seems like a good choice.

Cat tree too soon.

Scratching post Try this instead. Haven''t met a cat yet who disliked it. http://www.amazon.com/Scratch-Lounge/dp/B00115EY0U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1250135292&sr=8-1

Nail clippers

Two stainless steel bowls for food -- I like porcelien small human bowls. Cheaper, you can buy multiples.

A water fountain be careful can cause chin acne.

A placemat for the bowls it''s a nice theory.

Automatic litter box Unless kitten is used to this might totally freak it out. I''d just get a small scoopable pan to start.

Pet stain and odor remover They don''t make much mess, but always nice to have.

Bitter Apple-like (bad tasting) training aid NO. Use positive reinforcement. And it''s only good for licking behavior.

Toys (feather wand, soft balls, laser light, one of those circles with a ball the cats bat around, with a scratching pad on top) small fur mice are nice too.

This is for two rambunctious kittens who will be home with me in a month!!

Is there anything else I should get? Any advice on transitioning two new kittens (littermates) to their new home? Rescue remedy and Feladie

Also, I don''t have food on this list because I need to buy it elsewhere - the kittens are on Eagle Pack at the breeders, and I''m keeping them on that for a while. I''ll probably transition them to Avoderm or something similar as they get older.

Thanks!!

Additional stuff... clorox wipes. Seriously. You''ll thank me.

First thing you do is set the house up. Second thing you do is take the cats out, one by one. Place them in the litter box first thing. Let them sniff around and walk out on their own. THEN after they''ve each done this take them to thier bowls and show them where those are. Spray their beds with Feladie it has nice pheromones that will make them take to it, or at least more likely to make them take to it.

Gypsy, thanks so much! I''m going back to the website now to substitute items

As always, I''m grateful for your excellent kitten advice!
