can you tell the difference b/t a non H&A stone just by looking at it without an H&A scope?

In the right lighting I can separate near h&a from those that have h&a potential from the face up view without tools.

In the right lighting you can see the arrows quite clearly without a viewer.

I would not try to see the arrows-pattern, but I would try to observe the crisper scintillation.

Then again, my girlfriend studied filmschool for 3 years, and she cannot simply look at a tv-series or a movie. She is constantly complaining about position-switches, predictability of the script and other technical stuff, while I try to enjoy the story.

Live long,

For those who wish to do so, you can cup your hand into a tube and look at a diamond in the bottom of the tube and see many things about the cutting, estimate pavilion depth if you know what to look for, see arrows if they are there, etc. Not quite the same as not using any tools, but not quite the same as using tools either...

tp tube can be used as a h&a viewer also, doesn''t work as well as a scope but works.

Not to rehash, but didn''t we once have a multipage thread about true H & A?

true but there are signs face up that a diamond does not have h&a potential.

About November last year that article was updated and moved to the journal section.

Also the regular tutorial H&A''s section was updated
http://diamonds.pricescope.com/hna.asp
And at the bottom of that page is a link to the article you were referring to

I remember this article from 2004.

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/early-history-of-hearts-and-arrows.15762/

i can understand what is it saying, so I''ll summarise it briefly... (finaly can ontribute back to this community
3.gif
)

Page 1
H&A (or in their terms, Hearts and Cupids) are not limited to diamonds with excellent symmetry and cut since it is about how light is reflected and returned.

Page 2
Based on AGL standards (then), a diamond graded with VG cut could give H&A, while diamonds graded GD cut and lower would most likely give improper hearts hearts.

Top half of page, two diamonds on the right: Not acceptable (hearts not formed properly)
Bottom half of page, clockwise from left:
Not acceptable: Tip of heart is misaligned
Acceptable: Tip of heart very slightly misaligned
Acceptable: Smaller heart within acceptable limits
Not acceptable: Too much difference in the hearts sizes
Not acceptable: Broken heart

Page 3
Boundary between Hearts and V patterns and inclusions
If boundaries cannot be made between Hearts and V, it is not acceptable.
But if the V is not uniform at both tips, it is still acceptable as long the difference is small.

Top half of page, first row of two diamonds on top:
Acceptable: Boundary between hearts and V is recognisable
Second row of two diamonds:
Acceptable
: Inclusions do not affect heart shape
Third row of two diamonds:
Not acceptable: Boundary not distinguishable
Not acceptable: Inclusions affect the appearance of the hearts

Page 4
Cupid Pattern
The arrows must show 8 distinct arrows in distinct positions.

Big picture on top left: Acceptable
Big picture on bottom left: Not acceptable (Difference is understood with comparing with picture above)

Top of page, first row, left diamond:
Acceptable: "Harm" caused by inclusion (acceptable limit)
Top of page, first row, right diamond:
Acceptable: Inclusions do not affect the patterns from showing
Top of page, second row, left diamond:
Not acceptable: Inclusions affect heart shapes
Top of page, second row, right diamond:
Not acceptable: Inclusions cause arrows to not show (does not reflect white)
Top of page, third row of diamonds:
Not acceptable: Arrow heads not touching body

Notes:
1. "Heart and Cupids" are CGL''s standards.
2. The pictures (of Hearts and Cupids) are taken using CGL''s equipment and diamonds are set by CGL. Using simple tools (eg loupe) hence not in the correct positions to check, may result in some misalignments.

Hope this helps with this ongoing discussion.
You can ask if there are any parts unclear, I''ll be glad to help out.

PS: Just out of curiosity, that would mean that this particular heart would be pushing the limit (based on CGL standards), or simply could be a poorly taken photo.
