Keep the e-ring a separate thing. No one buys jewelry to ''go'' with their e-ring. All women have jewelry items in their jewel box that they no longer wear because it is no longer their style, but the e-ring is supposed to stand the test of time. Sure, I''ve upgraded my e-ring, but it has always been comprised of only white diamonds and it has never been intended to be part of a ''set'' of jewelry. A beautiful e-ring will go with ALL the jewelry she''ll ever own. I had considered the use of blue sapphires as accent stones at one time as blue is my absolute favorite color in the world, can''t get enough of it, but I realized that having the color in my e-ring was too limiting.

Now this makes a lot of sense. I''ll have to really think about this!

But again...I''ve just got this feeling that she would really like the purple stones in her Engagement Ring. Not as part of a "Set" (Outstanding point), but just because she''s so nuts on purple.

I''m telling you...This chick likes this color like no one I''ve ever met in my life. A rainbow sends her into a happy coma.

Hmmmm... I''m gonna be the lone dissenter here. You seem to have a deep hunch that she''ll love the sapphires, and while not all guys get it right when it comes to choosing a ring style, I do think there''s something to be said for trusting your feelings too. Worst case, if she doesn''t like the look, you can use them for a pretty right hand ring later on.

I may not be the most objective person, because I adore sapphires, but I do really think they add character and personality. A good friend of mine got a gorgeous center sapphire with side trillion cut diamonds for her e-ring, and I think it''s just stunning.

Let me ask you this -have you bought her jewelry before at all, and if so, has she liked your choices? Do you pick out things in general that she likes? If not, then the safest route is the simple solitaire. But if you''re usually right on target, then I vote you take the slight risk and give her the type of ring you think would make her swoon

Okay! Here''s one:

That way it''s simple, classic, and goes with anything from the top-down. But you and she have a sneaky little secret, her favorite color tucked away underneath for her to peek at whenever she likes. :)

Can someone tell me what these are called? (I REALLY like this idea!). I''ve done a Google Search on "Suprise Stone Settings" and can''t get any hits.

Thanks!

(And by the way...On this particular setting. Is the "Surprise Stone" in that round hole? Or under the main stone like the others above? And if so, I guess those are two different examples of such settings??)

I really like the compromise of having a surprise sapphire. My only concern is finding a setting that has a sapphire more on the purple than blue side.

I think his best option is to have the setting made custom to the diamond he purchases, and have the jeweler get the surprise sapphire in a shade of his liking.

Another question I have is that I don''t recall seeing a surprise setting with an oval -- I''ve only seen it with rounds or princess cuts. I wonder how that would look. He most defiinitely would have to have it done custom, as I don''t think they are readily available for ovals.

I''m flexible on the oval thing. The only reason I chose oval is because I once saw one and liked it...Then when I discovered they were cheaper than round, I thought "Why not?" But, now I''ve had a change of heart on size. I was giong to go up to a 2.0 oval. But that''s just WAAAAY too much for her. I''ll be happy with a 1.5 or even a bit less. So now, based on my budget, I''m right in line for a round one.

A round is certainly the safer choice if you''re not sure about what she wants.
