Is a chip rough and granular on a diamond or is it like a polished surface. Does the light shine silvery on it.

How can one tell the difference between a chip and a natural.

Hi,

A chip is usually very rough looking and jagged. Usually more whitish. A natural is the actual skin of the crystal left over after the diamond has been polished. A natural can be appear to be very polished. Oftentimes you can find neat trigons on the naturals. Oftentimes, extra facets are added just to remove the naturals. I just saw one Saturday that had two huge extra facets extending down the pavilion with some indented trigons deeper into the stone. The cutter had attempted to polish the natural but didn't want to remove any more weight from the finished product. You will see this more on poorly cut stones. Cindy
