Interesting...the CDC is now saying in "exceptional situations" one can mix a Pfizer dose with a Moderna dose.

In fact, just last week, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued updated guidance advising that in “exceptional situations” it is acceptable to administer a different vaccine at a minimum interval of 28 days between doses.

There's some new studies that will be happening on the mixing of vaccines. Not signing up for any of those...lol So much is really a moving target.

I am very curious about this. You are so right. We are learning more stuff every day and it is all up in the air because it is all so new. We really don't know what we don't know.

Did you get Pfizer or Moderna @Arcadian?

I didn't realize that if one had Lupus one shouldn't get the vaccine. My mom has numerous AI diseases and her doctors said to get the vaccine. She had an awful reaction to the first Pfizer. Fever, chills etc. She was not infected with Covid 19 so that doesn't explain the reaction. Rather I am sure it is because of her AI diseases.

My mom has an AI disease too. Hopefully her doctor will be able to provide her with some guidance before it's her turn for the vaccine.

I believe in her case its cautionary. She can't take other vaccines either, the last one she took many years ago nearly killed her. I can't speak for everyone with Lupus but I can only think that its because my mom is also in many ways medically fragile. (she's got the weirdest freaking allergies!)

Anyone with an AI should rightly so consult their DR before getting the shots as they can be hard on normal people, or even people with well controlled co-morbidities.

Super sorry to hear about your mom!!

Aww thanks. She’s ok. I worry about both my parents though. They’re elderly and frail. All the best to your mom and dad too @Arcadian.

UK is going to, and may have even started to conduct a mix and match clinical trial as announced a week or so ago when EU threatened to block the export of the Pfizer/BionTech vaccines to UK.

Those HCPs who work in pharmacovigilance will be very busy!

my mom's and my 2nd shot appts for today were cancelled -- new appts are to be rescheduled once vaccine re-supply is confirmed -- hopefully within the next 2 weeks (which makes the 2nd shot within the 42-day period for Moderna).

good wishes for vaccine accessibility to everyone!

I'm sorry @marymm. Did they give you any idea when you both might be rescheduled? I hope it is soon and yes best wishes to everyone who wants to get vaccinated to be able to get vaccinated. Especially the second doses which are time sensitive.

I got my first Pfizer vaccination yesterday. My second one is scheduled for March 13. So far I only have a sore arm. It is the second vaccination that causes people the most side effects. The organization of the site where I had mine done was phenomenal. Everything moved like clockwork. I got a sticker at every stage of the process and was moved right along, but was still monitored medically. I left there with three stickers on my shirt, one of them for the time I was allowed to leave (15 minutes after the completion of my vaccination). Incredible organization!

What do you all think about the claims that the Pfizer vaccine provides up to 85 percent efficacy immunity after one dose? I think it’s too early to say but I’m afraid with all the postponements due to lack of second dosages, many providers are reassuring us that this is the case or that instead of 21 days you can wait 42 days for the second dose.

I also got notice that my second dose will probably be delayed up to the 42 day limit. It’s frustrating because that hasn’t been tested for efficacy..I’m worried. How do you both feel about it? I had Moderna..What did you get?

@nala I read about it..They really don’t know how long that 85 percent efficacy lasts..We need the second dose to give it a boost. What kind did you get?

Lol. Not me! My mom. She got Pfizer. My brother in law and fil both got Moderna and both have been delayed! Until who knows when. I don’t think I’ll get mine for a while—teachers have been pushed back from feb 1 to who knows when! Anyhow, I’m not too concerned about me unless they shove me back in the classroom!

Ha! Tbh, social distancing and masks are super effective and we’ve been able to live pretty normal lives so far so we are in no hurry for the vaccine.

My husband works in an office
In different states since the beginning. That makes me nervous. My son, wife, and grandsons all have either a sitter or attend a daycare. They’re little vectors..haha

Haha. Yes. I’m fortunate that I have no little vectors in my life!! Hubby has been working non-stop during the pandemic and so has my ex—who visits DD weekly! Ex flies due to business. At first I lived in paranoia bc of that but I learned to adapt for my sanity. I suffer from seasonal allergies so every time i had an itchy throat i would freak out. Luckily, hubby and DD kept me grounded bc they never appeared to have any symptoms so they reminded me it was allergies. So now I’m used to my new normal and have 100 percent confidence in masks and social distancing. We eat out—outdoors, grocery shop, shop in malls, go on road trips, stay in hotels and even go to the casino. Air circulation has a lot to do with staying safe so as long as places aren’t crowed and have tall ceilings and all that, we feel safe and have been so far!
I’ve always kept my mom socially distanced—I made it clear to all of my siblings and grandchildren that they were not to come near her since March! So we visit her outside and with masks. That has worked until now.
Hubby works inside peoples homes —he’s a contractor—with his partner who is very high risk. But they always open all windows and wear masks. His partner’s kids go to school and have been since September, so again—if I wanted to live in paranoia—I would have no shortage of reasons. But I think adaptability has been key. And safety measures.

@MamaBee OK, so because of your potential situation I asked our friend B who is a pulmonologist and he and his colleagues think it is fine to delay a week or two. But, as you know, the trials were done at 21 and 28 days respectively (depending on the vaccine) so the real answer is no one knows for sure. But both B and his colleagues strongly feel getting the vaccine a week or two outside the window is fine and effective.

I am curious to hear @MakingTheGrade and @m-cubed 's thoughts about this as well.

I also asked B about combining the two vaccines ie Pfizer one dose and Moderna for the other dose and he and his colleagues are more cautious about that. Though the CDC is saying in "exceptional cases" it is fine to do just that.

We just don't know what we don't know and that is the scary part.

That was so sweet of you to check with your friend @missy.. Thank you..I’m a rule follower to a fault...so going outside the window is unsettling for me..

I get it completely. I am very similar. B was very reassuring. He was at the hospital when I spoke with him and told me he was going to talk to his colleagues who knew even more about this than he did and he called me right back and told me they said A OK for waiting 28-42 days between doses.

What B told me that was unsettling was that while there are less Covid patients at the hospitals (or at least his hospital) and less patients dying there are still zero treatments that work once you have Covid. I thought by now there would be more effective treatments but he says no. All the studies prove there is no difference between any of the treatments and placebo. Sigh. Super scary.

That is reassuring to hear they think it’s okay..I hope my health department doesn’t cut it to too close and I wind up getting it past 42 days..I would be inconsolable..haha
I thought there were recent treatments for Covid that worked. That’s definitely scary..
