merrijoy, i would manually calculate all of that on calorie-count.com. the fruits would have to be manually calculated, aka how many pieces of each did you have. also your hummus container most likely had a nutritional informational thing on it? and the pita should as well? and when you spread stuff on, i just eyeball. aka look at a teaspoon. look at a tablespoon. a tablespoon is actually fairly large!! i don't typically measure things, i eyeball them once i know what my comparison is. is this more like a teaspoon or a tablespoon? if in doubt, i try to round up to be on the safe side.

honestly for me with counting, i don't get SUPER anal typically about things. i do know what a tablespoon of butter looks like cuz it's got the little measurement on the container. sometimes i measure my cereals but it's about once every 2 weeks just to be sure that the amount i'd 'typically' pour in is inline with what i would estimate so it ensures that my mental estimates are not getting larger or allowing for more than i am writing down.

like for example i just ate some fresh chopped pineapple. the whole container is 16 oz. i thought oh i easily ate half. but when i looked at the container it was still really full. so i estimated i ate about 6 oz. online at calorie-count.com it says 1 cup of chopped pineapple is 75 cals. so that's 8 oz. so if i ate 6 oz then i ate about 55 cals of pineapple. i'll probably only ever have to look that up once because i have a pretty good memory for stuff like that....so i won't have to be looking it up each time.

SB i love jello sugar free cups. seriously they come in so handy for a quickie snack or dessert. and YES you can eat 2 or 3 and not feel guilty...what else can you really say that about? hehe. i do have my fave flavors and some are icky. like i tried peach and watermelon and was so excited about new flavors. not loving either of them. my faves are raspberry, orange and the kiwi strawberry. the rest i can kinda leave...but i am forcing myself to finish the peach watermelon ones..bah!

TG...yeah those lime ices at 60 cals are the same version as the carribbean ones i got for 80. they look yummy. i am going to try them for desserts. i noticed that now that the weather is slowly starting to get warmer here i am starting to think about cooler treats and stuff.

SB...also i think on the sparkpeople stuff that it will always give you a lower amount when you want to lose weight. i think that's just how it's setup aka it assumes you want to exercise AND watch the food. maintaining is different though, seems like you have more leeway there for sure with calories.

so far i have done awesome today, it feels good to know i can still actually control myself when necessary, lol. for snack i had some pineapple and i just had a fiber bran muffin. i figure with my newly rediscovered self-control that i will be fine with dimsum tomorrow, lol! i'll just not snack at all.

I just spent 20 minutes looking for polenta mix!! Asked 2 store managers... they both ended up stumped and aimlessly wandering the supermarket with me : )

But we found it! So Kimberly''s incredible-sounding sausage/mushroom polenta is going to be dinner! Yippee! Persistence conquers : )

Ha ha! Same for me. I asked one guy who said, ''Uhhh. Uhhhh. Try the deli.'' (umm, NO!) and then another guy who literally just followed me up and down aisles going ''Maybe it''s near flour? Maybe it''s near cake mix? Maybe it''s near pasta ... '' until I was ready to tell him another place I was thinking of where it might be (hint: it''s a place the sun don''t shine)!

Thanks for the info on where it actually MIGHT be, Kimberly!

But polenta-finding frustration aside, I''m excited to make this -- it sounds delish!
I hope it ends up being worth all of the trouble, ladies! I would say so, I thought it was quite delicious and a lot of food for such a small amount of calories. If it''s not in any of the places I suggested, look near the pasta sauces, you may get lucky!

Merrijoy, does the salad have syrup? Add more calories if it does, but my guess is that a cup of it would be about 75-100 calories. Most of those fruits are high in water content. I don''t have a food scale, I measure most everything.

Just back from the gym. One hour on the elliptical for 634 cals.

My cal count today, as of right now, is 1320, but I can fee a little *something else* in my future. Boy though, that carrot cake for breakfast really threw everything off!

The happy hubby went grocery shopping today and I dug around in the pantry to see what he got but nothing really jumped out at me. Oh well, maybe that''s a good thing, LOL.

Kimberly, the dish was definetly worth it! Thanks for posting it!!

The sausage/mushroom/tomato, etc... mix was amazing! Neither DF nor I really enjoyed the polenta (we''d never had it!) so we sort of ignored that part of the meal and just ate the rest. So our grocery store scavenger hunt may not have been necessary, but hey, no big deal! It''s interesting because Brian never refuses to eat ANYTHING but the polenta just made him act like a resistant 5-year old... it was amusing : p

Now I have something to threaten him with... Brian, please change the oil in my car... or else I''ll make polenta

As mentioned last night, no fitness for us today as we had a meeting with the developer of our condo in Raleigh. They're so nice and accommodating to us. Tonights topic - Screens. May sound odd, but the windows in this building are designed to handle extreme winds and are low E something or other and "uber" expensive, but they don't have any screens and some of the windows actually open outward enough to permit fresh air. But with our cats, who are really small cats, they could somehow get through them and since we would really like to have some fresh air once in a while, they had to arrange to have some specialist window guy meet us to explain how they could custom make some screens for the windows. So, it went well and they determined they could do what we wanted and it won't cost too much money either. Everytime we're in this condo we fall more in love. They've really cleaned it up since the first time we saw it and it looks like we could just move right in. Of course we can't as we're having all three bedrooms carpets removed and we're continuing the Brazilian Cherry Hardwood's throughout. And of course, our Tampa condo is not close to being sold, so now we're looking at what options may exist for us if we can't sell the condo. I spoke with our mortgage broker and friend today about maybe taking an equity line on the condo in Tamap, finding a tenant for it and using the equity to purchase the condo in Raleigh. Maybe that would be a good option to consider as we do love the condo in Tampa and maybe not selling it would be a good financial move (after all it's right on Tampa Bay and shoud increase in value over time). I guess we'll explore the option and then decide what we really have to do, but the bottom line is we don't want to lose the condo up here. Oh why does everything havin to do with real-estate have to be so complicated???

We had Sushi for dinner at the Sushi Blues Cafe, which is walking distance from the condo. It was really really good tonight. It's so exciting to us to know we could come home to this new condo from a long day at work and just walk up the street to any number of fantastic restaurants and shops (including Sushi and Starbucks) without ever having to move our car out of the garage. So cool!!

We are hoping to return to the gym tomorrow night, but we're under a winter weather advisory for snow, sleet and freezing rain. Yuck. I hope they are wrong. But if they are right, may the mess start before I would have leave for work, so I don't get caught at work and I don't take a chance of sliding my nice new Mercedes into something, like someone elses nice car or a ditch. Still not sure I'm loving winter weather, but they say it's short lived in the Carolina's and that spring is just around the corner. Yet another reason it might be good to hold onto the condo in Tampa if we could manage to do that!!

One of my employee's is obese. He's been having black outs lately and they doctors have put him on hypertension medicine and told him he has to lose weight or consider having Gastric Bypass (he currently weighs 392 lbs - yikes). So today he finally asked for my help and I've set him up with a fitness trainer and I got him to give away the chocolate bars he has in his desk drawer that he didn't think anyone knew he had. He's a good person and he has children and a wife to take care of, so it's so important he gets healthier. We even set an elliptical challenge for next October (giving him some time to make some real progress). I hope my extreme health makeover can help inspire him to find a healthier way of living.

Anyway.........Saw lot's of good fitness news from many of you. Way to go TEAM PS!!!

Have a great Thursday and please throw some PS fairy dust to help our condo situation resolve. And some to make the snow gods to send the white and frozen stuff somewhere else (though I'd gladly take the snow if the dust will help our condo sell)!

That is hysterical! I love cornmeal/grain type foods, so I''m all over it, but it is fairly bland and looks a bit like baby food. It''s typically served I''m glad you enjoyed, next time just throw the mixture over wheat pasta instead!

We''re having NY Strip Steaks, brussel sprouts and salad (mine has lettuce, tomato and chick peas in it) for dinner. YUM! John is concerned I''m not getting enough protein for the amount of exercise I''m doing and in the foods I''m eating so he decided steak was a good dinner decision...that works for me. And at 315 calories and 20 g of fat for a 6 oz steak, I can rationalize that. I''m at about 1200 calories for the day, including dinner.

DeeJay, I hope that cake was delicious! I don''t typically like cake but my mom makes the most delicious carrot cake in the whole world and I could eat the whole pan if left alone for a long enough period of time.

Have a great night everyone! Keep up the fantastic work.

Rod,

Fairy dust is being sent and thank you for being someone who will stick his neck out for others. I find myself a bit too enthusiastic about weight loss at times around friends and family who need encouragement (namely my dad) but it is hard not to be having experienced the life changes from obese/overweight to healthy. I wish I could share that feeling with him for just a few hours, to perhaps inspire him to do something good for himself and my mom. He''s too young (52) and too fabulous not to take better care of himself, but only he can make the choice to put the food down and get moving. My mom (who is naturally thin and but not very healthy food and exercise wise) is going to walk in the 3Day with me this year, which I am thrilled about, and I hope that it might inspire him to do training walks with her.

Anyways, thanks for helping someone in need, his family will be forever greatful to you, I am sure.

Awww, gosh thanks. I know what it''s like to be the one who didn''t get it. I ate badly, I smoked, I got out of breath just walking up a flight of stairs and yet I waited until I was 50 before making "THE" change to a health infused person. There really isn''t anything you can say to someone that will make the difference for them. Someone has to find that inner desire to make the right changes. Everyday, Charlie would tell me I stank after having a cigarette. And everytime I lit one, I knew it was slowly and surely killing me, but I continued to smoke. Thank goodness I found the strength to overcome my bad habits and hopefully one day your dad will too. Just be patient with him and continue to love him and continue to show him (without being preachy) how positive being healthier has been for you!!! Congratulations on the walk with your mom. Maybe it will help your dad too!!

Quick comment about the exercise/pounds study (okay, it turned into a long one). you can pretty much find a study to substantiate anything you want to substantiate - the problem is finding a good study with good data. a lot of studies are specifically designed to show what the funders/investigators want to show, still others are just poorly designed. In the 'old days' a study was published and then had time for critical peer review before advertising it all over the place. now they go running to the media before anyone is able to critique the study. this study only had a total of 35 participants (36 until one dropped out) - they only had *12* people in each study arm, and it lasted for 6 months

1. 'healthy weight maintenance diet' (number = 11)
2. calorie restriction alone '25% reduction in energy intake' (number =12)
3. calorie restriction and exercise '12.5% reduction in energy intake and 12.5% increase in exercise energy expenditure' (number =12)

they excluded people with a body mass index >32, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease

although they gave meals to the participants, the participants were not directly monitored for eating (they had 'to go' boxes), nor were they directly monitored for exercise (only 3 of the workouts per week were done at the center, the rest on their own) and I think this is especially important in a study such as this with a small study size - who the heck knows if someone cheated a little when they got hungry, or just filled in on a log that they exercised when they didn't? with a small sample size little things like this can become important

The authors in the discussion even bring up "the losses in fat mass..and vat (visceral adipose tissue) mass... were similar in both treatment groups. However, due to the small sample size, it is conceivable that this result represents a type 2 statistical error. In other words we could not reject the null hypothesis when a true difference exists between calorie restriction and calorie restriction plus exercise..."

they also mention that they let participants chose their level of intensity for exercise (reportedly to encourage compliance), so I have no idea how they controlled for that, given that they again did not monitor all workouts. this makes it impossible to really know if they were really increasing their expenditure by 12.5%. Not to mention that the studies that have shown improvement in visceral fat loss, insulin sensitivity, and lipid profiles have been shown at HIGH intensity exercise - since they let people self select, there is again no way to know how intensive their exercise level was - maybe they were low intensity and so no difference was seen for that reason.

I also have no idea where they got the stuff in the media regarding this study specifically showing increasing muscle mass does not change metabolism - this study did not measure muscle mass, did not design a program to increase it in anyone, and certainly did not make mention of it in this study. the study simply was not designed to even evaluate this!!

they also mention that the only group that insulin sensitivity improved to statistically significant levels was in the calorie restriction plus exercise group. I haven't heard the media mention this yet.

This study is going to make a lot of people feel like 'well what's the point' to exercise and not do it which makes me feel like it is bad medicine because of the way it has been presented. When 'advertised', they miss the other benefits i.e. increased blood vessel flexibility/lower blood pressure, overall sense of well being, etc. the media drives me crazy because I feel like they pick up on every random study and flash it all across the news like it is the gospel instead of critically evaluating how a study is done. no wonder the public is so confused!!!

Okay, end of rant - I hope maybe this helps someone when this study is brought up for discussion in casual conversation. Now back to our regularly scheduled thread!

Thanks for the rant Lisa!!!! I for one am an example of how lot''s of exercise combined with calory reduction and overall healthier eating habits can accomplish so much for little things like reducing blood pressure, increasing lung capacity, significantly reducing BMI and Body Fat content and while I haven''t had any arteries examined up close, I''m betting my arterial (sorry if that''s not the right term there doc) system is ever so much healthier. What is the point of publishing a study that includes so few participants and whose progress was barely watched up close?

Thanks again for the rant!!!

It''s so sad because he''s lost before, but he used a program that didn''t teach him how to eat once he returned to the real world. My mom said he has been eating non-stop for the last two weeks (he has shingles and is taking pregnazone which can increase appetite). I just feel so bad for him, and for her as she is totally reliant on him financially and I know it scares her. He joined in on my weight loss journey 4 years ago for a sum total of 2 weeks and he just couldn''t stick to it. I tried so hard to encourage him sans the diadactic tone and he just couldn''t get motivated enough to ride the journey out. Maybe on of these days he will. I am really proud of my mom dedicating herself to something so huge at 50 years old after a lifetime of not exercising. This is monumental and I want her to feel as terrific as her actions are just amazingly admirable. She''s a fantastic lady.

Kimberly, I failed to mention that I was partially spured on by a lifelong disappointment in myself and a Doctor''s warning that if I didn''t do something to change my bad ways, I''d be leaving this world WAY earlier than necessary. Sometimes Doctors have the abiliyt to strike a chord of fear in a way that no family member can. Maybe your mom can enlist the help of your dad''s physician? Good luck. It''s obvious you love your dad very much. I hope he gives you many more years to show him how much!

Rod,

His best friend died at 60 from heart complications due to obesity. R knew he was dying, he retired, had his wife do the same and they moved to the same city/state as their daughter; after his death it became apparent that R had done so to see that his wife was near family, he knew he was dying. We all thought for sure this would be a wake up call for my dad (he still mourns the loss of his friend 4 years after the fact), he can''t talk about R without upset and tears to this day.

His MD has told him, my mom has told him, he just isn''t ready to face the facts and until he is there is nothing anyone can do, sadly enough. My mom just lost her father and I think it scares her to see my dad eating constantly. Death hits too close to home right now.

I adore my father, he is such an amazing human being and I just hope that for my mom''s sake he finds a way to turn things around or in 10 years he''ll be R and my mom will be R''s wife M. It would be a tragedy as he has worked so hard to make my mom, my sister and I comfortable and happy and he''ll have never enjoyed the amazing life he created, he''s too busy eating and working to do so.

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it more than you may know.

rod i''m so sorry to hear about your coworker--hopefully he finds the strength within himself to do what he needs to in order to change his life for the better. and it''s so awesome that he has you there to help because you have first hand experience and it''s very valuable. also with your father kimberly, good luck. sometimes it''s so hard to get people to change...the mental roadblocks they throw up (even unknowingly) can be huge.

so i stuck to my no snacking thing once i got home even though i was hungry...and we ate dinner...our pizzas and salad. greg tried the pizza margherita this time and it was good, i had a piece...but i still like my chicken artichoke mushroom one the best. plus his is 540 cals for the whole pizza and mine is 440. 540 is still awesome aka if you want a pizza margherita specifcally then it''s a great option instead of a restaurant option as well. dessert will be a biscotti or a pudding cup or maybe sorbet or something.

have a great evening everyone!! rod your excitement for your new digs is palpable...i can''t wait to see pictures!

That''s great that your workmate asked you for help Rod. He can definitely do it, especially if you''re helping him

Went to the gym early in the afternoon yesterday and did 600 cals on elliptical and upped the level of intensity and incline, so my thighs are feelin'' it this morning! I also managed to weight lift Tuesday night and I did use 15 lbs free weight vs. the 12lbs and it wasn''t difficult for me as I predicted, so maybe that means I''m getting stronger. yay!

I''ve also incorporated taking a fish oil pill along with my multivitamin. I got this kind at Target for buy one get one free and it states on the bottle "No fish burps!" so that caught my eye.

Last night I made the shrimp and linguine for dinner and YUM, omg this was amazing! Hard to believe it is lower in fat. Tastes just like a fettecine alfredo, but its made with reduced fat sour cream, fat free evaporated milk and a bit of parm as the base of the sauce, so its amazingly creamy. I''ll post it in the recipe thread.

This afternoon, I think I''m going to head to the gym and walk on the treadmill for 1/2 hr, I think I should switch it up a bit from the ellip. since I expect to do that tomorrow night.

Pat on the back for those who are losing pounds!!

Made the polenta/sausage/mushroom meal last night, and it was really good! I was a bit "eh" on the polenta too (though not so much that it can be used as a threat against me -- ha ha, Aurelia, that''s hysterical!), so I think for tonight''s leftover sauce, we may cook the polenta a little less to leave it creamier -- last night''s consistency was a bit offputting to me -- and also go a bit lighter on the garlic powder. But the sausage and mushrooms part was fabuloso

wow rod, a blackout sounds really scary--i guess that''s a better warning sign than a heart attack though. i''m sure you''re really going to help this guy. on a lighter note, living w/in walking distance from a starbucks is awsome! my current (and previous) apartment is right by a starbucks and it makes life so much easier at times. you and your guy and your little cats are going to have so much fun in the new place!

i must have blown my 1000 cal plan at dinner last night--this place was SO GOOD! i had carrot soup, striped bass, and then shared 2 desserts 3 ways, creme brulee and profitoroles. but as usual, i probably had more than my fair share of the deserts. whoo. if ever in houston, and you love great food, try this place Cafe Rabalais in the village. really cute little french place w/ candlelight and the menu changes every day.

by the way, thanks again everyone for the calorie counting info and inspiration. i think this is going to be a good change for me.

So far I''ve had a good morning! Went to the gym, did 45 mins on the elliptical and burned about 400 calories! Usually I can burn more, but I had the resistance low b/c I''m starting over sort of. So far I''ve had yogurt, but I''m hungry so I may grab a low fat trail mix bar.

Yayeee! I''ll do measurements at the end of the week!

Thanks for the encouragement, Mara. I always try how hard it was to change myself so I know changing someone else is nearly impossible! But being supportive and encouraging can never hurt.

Nejarb: Be proud of yourself for not eating a dessert on your own! Baby steps in the right direction are better than no steps at all. Creme brulee is one of the few desserts I hate sharing, I want it all to myself.

Ellaila: I ended up adding more water to mine to make the constistency a bit more creamy, but I didn''t change that part of the recipe because I don''t know how much more I added, I just did it until I liked the way it looked. I''m glad the sausage, mushrooms and tomatoes went over well.

John''s mom is being released today, so we''re going to pick up a rental car this morning (we both drive trucks and she can''t get in and out of them) then off to get her back to the board and care and settled. This should take up a large portion of the day. I''m hoping to get in a workout when we get home. I''m making dinner tonight but I''m not sure what yet.

Everyone keep up the great work! And don''t get discouraged if you aren''t losing lbs. just be proud of yourself for taking good care of your body!

So I just had that peanut butter sandwich for breakfast that''s been haunting my dreams, but LAST NIGHT I had a dream about a chocolate cake. It was in this big flat pan and I was supposed to take it out of the pan and put it on a platter but I didn''t have any utensils so I was trying to just slip my hands under it and my fingers kept popping through all covered with icing!

I''ve mapped out my cals for the day and I''m only at 1205 (that''s if I eat the higher cal option for dinner that I''m considering) so I have some more snacking room left. Or, if I get REALLY snacky this afternoon I can go with the lower cal option and still be in good shape. And I''ll do a lighter (bike/treadmill) workout tonight for hopefully about 400 cals or so since I did the elliptical last night.

BTW, I never did post my measurements but I checked them again last night and my waist is down 2+ inches since mid December--yah!

Rod, that''s great that your colleague asked for help getting his weight down. As for giving up that secret stash of chocolate bars--a key step in the right direction, LOL!
