Thanks for the welcome you guys! Mara, I hope you feel better soon! My FSIL is having all sorts of GI problems and keeps having to go in for tests which is no fun. I hope yours clears up before it gets to that!

AmberGretchen- It is really nice to have another vegetarian!! I have been reading about the South Beach diet lately but I googled vegetarian options so I think I am going to try a version of that. They let you eat a pretty good amount of cheese which is my favorite food ever! Good luck with the snacks and smaller dinner. It makes a lot more sense than being starved when you get home and eating too much.

Appletini- I was thinking about trying those salad dressings too. It sees a little easier than the dipping fork method.

I was going to go on the elliptical but then I realised I need to get a new sports bra. Hopefully I can pick one up when I run some errands so I can work out tonight. If not I may just take a walk over some hills with my dog. If only it would warm up!!

Hope that you''re feeling better soon Mara!

I got my exam results today so I wasnt in the mood to do a work out today! I did really well so I just want to celebrate! I''ll head to the gym tomorrow morning instead. Eating wise I havent done too badly today. Im really snacky today though-I had my usual crunchy nuts for breakfast, a ham sandwich with wholemeal bread, a bag of popcorn and an alpen bar for lunch. I had an apple as my snack and then a bit salad with a small amt of garlic bread for my dinner. It was yum!

On another note, I bought a tape measure yesterday. Can I just check where I have to measure myself-is it around my waist, bust and hips or where are the best spots to measure?

Well done ambergretchen on the weight loss!! 2lbs s great!

Thanks Mara - its really nice to see that positive feedback on the scale.

I''m trying to focus on that rather than that this is weight that I already lost last year but gained back after my wedding partly because my asthma got so bad I couldn''t exercise for a while and partly just from letting it all go for too long and not thinking enough about what I was eating, etc...I''m determined to make this a real lifestyle change this time, and I think I''m being smarter about it because writing it all down, while it might seem more obsessive, actually allows me to THINK about food less, which I think is healthy, because otherwise I tend to get obsessive and it interferes with my life. I''ve also made a deal with myself that if I can get to my goal weight and stay there (and as I"m going through the process) my job is to learn to be OK with that and know that I am genetically programmed to be very heavy, and so a healthy weight/size is fantastic, and I don''t need to be skinny, because its not realistic and I won''t maintain it. I have a lifetime to go, and frankly it seems ridiculous to me that someone who is smart and well-educated and capable, all of which I am, should spend such a huge percentage of my time and energy and thoughts hating my body and feeling bad about myself. So I''m really trying to change my whole attitude and approach this time.

Indecisive - South Beach was great, but phase 1 was killer. I got so crabby and miserable after about 10 days that I started adding back in healthy carbs like whole grains and fruit and I felt so much better. I''m sure that varies with different people, but something to keep in mind - if its really unpleasant, better to go to phase 2 sooner than go off it altogether.

indecisive and AG, i used to be a veggie but started eating small quantities of chicken and turkey breast about 18 months ago, usually just once or twice a week. i also eat fish. for me the biggest challenge as a veggie was getting enough protein - i always ate lots of carbs, which are so calorie-dense. my only suggestions are to try to get in a good amount of lean protein and fiber to help you feel full. i still eat plenty of tofu, beans, and nonfat greek yogurt. one of my favorites is morningstar farms veggie buffalo wings. they are spicy and filling, 200 calories for a serving. i pair them with a vegetable for dinner.

i had a good weekend, food and exercise-wise. i spent about an hour on the elliptical on both saturday and sunday. went out both friday and saturday nights, stuck to 2 glasses of wine on friday, had three onion rings at dinner on saturday but otherwise ate healthy and no alcohol. weekends are always hardest for me to stick to eating well, because i tend to go out for dinner and also drink, so i was pretty happy this weekend.

probably no workout for me tonight - my horse has been sick all weekend and i need to get out to the barn after work to check on him tonight.

food for today was a pumpkin spice muffin for breakfast, tj''s tortilla chowder for lunch, small skim latte as a snack, and probably veggie buffalo wings with a spinach and broccoli casserole for dinner, plus some yogurt for dessert.

shortblonde - that''s one reason I''m finding the sparkpeople tracker so helpful is it helps me see when I''m not getting enough protein. I don''t tend to eat tons of protein every single day, but if I notice I''ve had a low day then I''ll aim to eat extra tofu and lowfat or nonfat dairy or lentils or whatever the next day to compensate, and my average is well within the recommended range so I think that''s fine. Once our blender gets fixed I may go back to protein shakes on some mornings as well.

I''ve been a veggie since I was 5 years old, so I don''t see myself adding back in meat anytime soon. I actually did try to add back in turkey/chicken when I was doing ballet seriously (like 40 hours a week) in high school for the extra protein, but I gagged every time I tried to eat it so that didn''t work too well. But there are lots of really great options out there now for getting protein as a veggie that are healthy, so I think its much easier to be healthy and still get all the nutrients you need as a veggie than it used to be.

hi AG - i'm definitely not implying that it's not possible for veggies to get enough protein, or that anyone else should consider eating meat. humans actually don't require very much protein to function. however, i find that i stay full longer and with less food when i eat more protein, and i decided that adding in a little poultry was the right thing for me in terms of getting a good balance of protein, fat, and carbs. i'm really picky about how i eat it and only do so if i've cooked it myself. but you're right, there are lots of good veggie protein options out there if you don't want to eat meat!

has anyone tried the vitalicious line of goodies? the hungry girl chica seems to really love them and swear by them, i was checking them out online and they have a 100 cal 2 oz ''double chocolate muffin''... small but good for a dessert...i think the whole muffin is 200 cals and 4oz actually but one serving is 1/2. thoughts? they have 100 cal brownies too. i guess they are sold at whole foods.

Ok on a whim I tried on my pre-pregnancy jeans and guess what? THEY FIT NOW!!!

I am so motivated by seeing results and the encouragement here - thank u all!

Ohhhhhhh I have it on good authority that we''re going to have a Thomas Keller restaurant in Melbourne at Crown Casino. I think he owns French Laundry and Per Se? Looks like I can indulge over here instead of flying all the way to the northern hemisphere

Hi everyone - I haven''t been on the boards for the last few days. We went to the gym after 11pm on Friday for a short time (long day at work), but glad just to go. Helped to decompress the day. I was shocked at how full the gym was at 11pm!!! Went back to the gym on Saturday, and for a run yesterday. Not sure if I will be going tonight or taking the day off. Gym is supercrowded with the turn of the New Year. I haven''t ordered the SnapJump yet, but when I do and get it, I will let you guys know what I think.

Mara, I am glad you are going to get scoped - it is definitely appropriate at this time. I was going to recommend that you increase your prilosec to twice a day dosing in the interim while awaiting the GI appt after reading your first post (that is the ulcer treatment dosing), but it sounds like your primary already did this based on your second post. Continue to avoid all alcohol and ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.

I appreciate this thread, because I have faithfully exercised for years, but lately have just lost interest and been apathetic - this thread is very inspiring and helps me have a desire to exercise to be a part of it!!!

Keep up the good work everyone!

I will try to see if I can find an interesting study for you guys that I heard about with calories and eating out.

Lorelei, I hope the treadmills are prepared!

I was the one who recommended Better'N'Peanut Butter over in the TJ thread, and I have to say that sometimes I think Hungry Girl has been eating low-cal food for wayyyy too long
2.gif
She says the PB tastes likes peanut butter and jelly in her article that I just clicked on, I don't find that to be the case at ALL. It IS a bit sweeter than normal PB, but nothing like jam. But this is the same gal who said shiritaki noodles taste like pasta... yechhh. I find that her taste is far different from mine. Take anything she recommends with a grain of salt -- she raves over the weirdest foods!

Also Marc gets home at 7 and then we're off to the gym!

lol lindsey, i have the better n''peanut butter but i haven''t tried it just yet. i have SO many things in our pantry it''s crazy. there is not enough time in the day to try to eat half the stuff i want to experiment with. and it seems like that is always the case!!

anyhow tonite greg is going to eat the leftover chinese which is a fair amount and i am going to make grilled 2% cheese sandwiches on my multigrain low-cal high fiber bread for myself. and we have some leftover pastries, so i tried looking them up online and the chocolate croissant looks like possibly the lesser of two evils, at 350-400 typically for one (i compiled a few sources then averaged), so if i split it with greg it will work out nicely to be within my cal range for today.

lisa, yeah i only have to get scoped if i''m not any better within 2 weeks. so keeping fingers crossed because i don''t really WANT to get scoped, lol. but i wanted to say thanks very much for suggesting what you thought it was a week ago and encouraging me to get the prilosec because if i had listened to that useless doctor i saw last week i''d be over here taking peppermint and all sorts of other things for the IBS that i don''t have.
40.gif
at least now i feel like i''m on a better path with someone who knows what they are talking about (my primary) and is suggesting things to help me get better. i''ll keep you guys posted.

in terms of restaurant and eating out, yep it''s scary!! at my gym they have this big poster thing of a big plate of spaghetti and meatballs on it. they said that is the serving that places typically give you now, and calculated it at 2000 cals. yep that''s more than most of our one days worth here!!
23.gif
even if you just eat 1/2 it''s about 1k calories for a meal. anyway, eating out can be scary. when we eat out, i actually typically tend to estimate about 1k calories for the dinner because i figure it''s a good estimation. who knows how close it is really and if we are really going all out i might add more in. but in terms of estimations, i try to aim high.

Mara and I are on the same page in regards to estimates when eating out. Like last night, I probably had 3/4 cup of penne pasta, 6 oz of chicken and 1/8 cup of pesto sauce and I estimated it to be about 700 calories. Add in the split salad and the spring roll and I''m at about 1100 calories for dinner. I use calorie-count.com to help determine a reasonable estimate and usually look at at least two types of foods that were close to what I ate so I''m pretty sure my estimates are on par.

I always get my dressing on the side when ordering salad, or if we''re at a Mexican restaurant I just substitute salsa for dressing, I like it better anyways, which is lucky for me! I all but avoid foods that have the words "cream" and "fried" in th description. Last night we ordered spring rolls and I ate 1 and left the rest for John, so I still get to enjoy, just much smaller amounts than I would have 5 years ago.

John is making us a lighter version of chicken vesuvio for dinner, something like 400 calories, and a side salad. I am way under on calories today, I''ll be at 900 after dinner. I made a low-fat vegan soup for lunch and ended up trashing 1/2 of it because it was awful and having some yogurt but then had to run out and haven''t had anything since. I guess it''s not such a bad thing considering my food-festival last night, but I need to get to 1100 calories or so as I don''t think it''s healthy to eat so little in a day. Frozen yogurt here I come.

update..my doctor called me back (the one who i have on record but i hardly see since she is in another town and i have yet to move my records over to a closer office)...and we talked for 20 minutes. she says it definitely sounds like my stomach and tubing is inflamed and is going to give me a higher prescription dosage of prilosec than what i am taking now. she said it could take a few weeks to really start working. my lab tests came back fine, she said that i should just watch the foods i eat because some of them could be making me worse. apparently yogurt is acidic and not good for me right now, boo hoo!! and also anything like garlic, onions, tomatoes, citrus etc. antacids can continue to help. apparently the prilosec also heals ulcers so if i have one starting that should eventually take care of it. she said she wants to continue with this higher dosage of prilosec for a few weeks and then if things are not improved, she wants to schedule an endoscopy (tube into tummy) with a GI specialist. yikes! so hopefully things do improve within a few weeks.
Mara, I hope the higher dose of Prilosec helps, but don't fear the endoscopic exam. When I had my colonoscopy last year, they decided to do an edoscopic at the same time and I never had any discomfort. Of course I was pretty much under anesthesia, but I never had a sense that anything had gone down my throat afterwards. I highly recommend you have this test and get a real diagnosis and know just what's causing the pain and discomfort. I'm sorry, but your doctor seems to be guessing and I don't think guessing is what we should pay doctors to do when you're having ongoing pain. Have the test and be done with it. Just my .02 worth.

636 cals on the elliptical--and it felt so good to be back at the gym! I tried going backwards tonight too, 10 mins forward, 5 mins back, for the hour. It is definitely a "different" motion and it took me a second to get my balance!

I''m having my LC pepperoni pizza and 1/2 cup Classico sauce right now, and I''ll go dig some pudding out of the fridge later, so all in all it''s been a good day.

I''m going to have a jeans dilemma pretty soon. The ones I bought in November are going to be too big but the other ones I have will still be too small. I hate to buy a pair of jeans just to make it through a 10 pound gap, but I think I might have to. Damn. I HATE to go jeans shopping...

Good motivational intro this week Lorelei
36.gif
36.gif
. I've already noticed a significant decline in newbies at the gym. It's just amazing how people will pay a couple hundred dollars ($$$$) to join up and be locked into a year long contract @ say $36/month and then just lose the motivation. I guess all it takes is to be sore, or not see any weight loss on the scale, and they assume it isn't working or won't work and then just go back to their old [bad] habits. I must admit I was once one of them. We joined a gym many many years ago, and we bought a lifetime membership for $1000 each. We then went three times, I got sick and never went back. I figure that cost me $333 per visit. It's funny how one can finally find the desire to be healthy and actually change one's life, permanently. And that's what it takes is a mental decision to make life affirming decisions designed to offer higher levels of health, fitness and ultimately, longer life. Anyway, Lorelei good intro!!!

I'm also on the guesstimate side of eating out. But, I also tend to shy away from foods that I know are likely too fattening. When we ate out Saturday night, one of the sides that came standard with my grilled tenderloin was a caserole of a twice baked potato. While it was super yummy, I knew it had to to super caloric, so I ate enough to feel I had 'experieced' the dish, but left more than half of it uneaten. It's taken me a long time to graduate from the clean your plate club, to the eat enough to enjoy it club, but it's not absolutely necessary to eat every last bite (unless of course it's Sushi
30.gif
31.gif
)!! I guess my longwinded point is, you know what's fattening. And you know if you eat the "whole" thing, you're probably eating too many calories. Just be sensible and avoid foods you know have too many calories or too much cholesterol or too much sodium or.........well, you get the idea.

It was a really cold day in Raleigh and never got out of the 30's. Brrrrrrrrrr. We don't work out on Mondays after working out hard on Saturday and Sunday, so we had sushi at our 2nd favorite sushi restaurant. It was really really good and I do eat every single piece we order. Tomorrow, it's back to the gym for the next three nights.

Hope everyone's week is off to a really good and healthy start!

HI:

I will be undergoing a gastro/colonscopy next Tue, and "fear" the prep more than the exam! Here they use conscious sedation and not a g/a. My DH had gastric ulcers in his early 30''s and has many scopes as follow thru over the years. Never a bit of trouble as a result of the scope and the tests have always been informative. Good luck on your decision on what to do.

cheers--Sharon

Whoo hoo on the pre-prego jeans Jadeleaves!

Mara, I am sorry to hear about all this stomach frustration! I can handle all kinds of illness, but pain in the gut absolutely cripples me. You have my sympathies.

And LOL re: fage yogurt. I definitely don''t take a trip to heaven when I eat it. I know that it''s good for me, and since I generally don''t like yogurt, I like that I can eat something considered healthy that I like. I''d rather have tons of other things for dessert, but when you''re watching cals, I find it a satisfying alternative. And it definitely grows on me the more I eat it, so that I am now to the point where I don''t need a tons of "fixin''s".

Went to gyro class today and got my booty kicked. It has been a strangely non food day for me...just a bowl of cereal and a bowl of soup. So I think we are going out to dinner.

Oh...and I have now survived my last weekend in Jan without alcohol! Whoo hoo! Just 3 more days to go!!!!

TravelingGal you have motivated me to be alcohol free for Febuary. I usually do this for twice in the year and never ever EVER lose any weight in that time. But this time I am certainly exercising a whole lot more and keeping my calorie intake to about 1300 per day. I have only lost a kilo for the whole of January but i feel more toned so maybe its time to get serious about the Chardonnay

wow TG you go girl!! i am not a big alcohol drinker anyway so it'd be no biggie for me to go 1 month or 3 months with no alcohol, i have the odd glass of wine (more like 1/8 glass) or cocktail when we go out on weekends but i hardly ever finish it and its really rare that i get more than one...only if its really yummy and it's a special occasion. i'm a frou frou drinker anyway. but i know alcohol is a part of a lot of people's lives, not in a bad way, just like a one glass of wine every other day thing or whatever and it can be hard to nix that! i don't think greg could go without his nightly beer or wine glass..he loves it.

thanks for the pep talk rod and sharon...i do think that when it comes to gut issues, many times doctors DO guess, their best guess. but at least this gal is on track with what our resident MD lisa's guess is (and my guess too after reading more about what lisa thought it was), so i feel okay about giving it another week or two and doubling my dose (i picked up my prescrip after work) of this stuff that is recommended. if in another 2 weeks i am still not feeling much better, i will definitely push for the endo...if it's necessary i will totally do it. i could probably push for it now...i am kind of the same mind of 'i just wanna know'...but my primary probably won't feel as comfy giving it to me because she didn't see me a week or two ago. i should have definitely gone to her first...and i'd be three weeks into my treatment, not just one. que sera sera! i think that if this primary had still tried to say 'well thats not what you have' then i would have tried to get the GI appt on my own somehow another way. sharon, why are you undergoing the endo if you don't mind me asking. (if so just ignore me!).

i picked up some chewable rolaids at the store today too, apparently good for antacid kinda heartburn and indigestion and this one had a gasX component to it as well so i can just take one or two chewables when i feel sickly. i felt pretty good for most of today though...it's in the evenings when i feel a little more rough....but a night of sleep always makes me feel better!!

at the store i also picked up a pack of nonni's biscotti, any biscotti lovers here? this is a chocolate decadence one and one biscotti is 110 cals and 4.5g of fat. i'm looking for 100ish cal items for dessert for when i don't feel like pudding or whatever. and if i can have something chocolatey but not crazy, it will most likely tame the taste buds.

DJ re the jeans, try to pick up a cheapo pair somewhere, like maybe a levis or something for $40ish? i love american eagle because their stuff is like $30 for jeans and they are cute...so it was a great way to get some new jeans in my smaller size but not have to splurge on the expensive jeans i like. now i have kind of a hodgepodge of a few expensive pairs and some cheaper ones in my new size. or check out a marshalls or loehmanns near you, probably could find some good jeans deals.

TG i am bummed i am not supposed to have yogurt really....i want to keep experimenting with the fage!! i love food projects, hehe. but i might sneak one here and there..and just have an antacid if i feel upset. i know i am not going to cut out everything that is 'bad' for me because i just love things like garlic and chocolate way too much, hahaa. and i'm still going to have my morning coffee but 1/2 cup.

i'm starving!! i'm waiting til greg gets home to make us dinner...even though we're having totally separate things tonite. for lunch i had a chicken and rice soup and then snacks were a slice of cranberry pumpkin bread from TJ's; 100 cal popcorn; and 1/2 a banana. and i'm hungry again! so i'm making myself 2 grilled cheese sandwiches with my 2% cheddar and multigrain bread and then we're splitting the choco croissant, mmm!! trying not to snack in the meantime..hehe. no workout today...i'm going to ramp up slowly, doing 3-4x a week on like 1/2 strength...so tonite is a night off. have a great night everyone!

Hi Sharon,

You are right. The prep is worse than the exam. The all clear liquids'' diet and the ''turbo'' flush you have to drink the day before the procedure is the worst you''ll likely experience. I do remember seeing the monitor for a while and I remember thinking........"wow....it''s pink in there!" Then I remember the doctor saying, "let''s get of here, it''s boring." And then they wheeled me away, the doctor came in and told me there was nothing wrong, either upper or lower, Charlie took me home, I went to sleep, woke up absolutely starved and ate some scrambled eggs and toast. By the evening, I was fine and ready for a regular meal. I hope your procedure is completely uneventful like mine.

HI Mara:

You are right. My GI was very clear in suggesting that they may never find out what the problem is--but, in brief, for five months I have had an unusual pressure sensation in my ULQ. Abd u/s & MRI clear, bloodwork normal, other parts OK, so testing the gut. Process of elimination--pardon the pun! ok that was lame.

Rod--turbo flush--that is halir! But aptly described.....lol

Ok back to the regular programming.........

Katebar, you go! And you picked a great month to do it...only 28 days instead of 31...hehehe....

I am actually not a big drinker. I rarely drink on weekdays. It''s weekends that are the problem. We often go to friends'' homes (there''s usually about 16 of us who hang out) and EVERYONE has an appreciation for wine. Often nice bottles get opened. Since we hang out from early evening until the wee hours, I can easily drink several large glasses in one night. Multiply that by 2 evenings (Friday and Sat), and that is a heck of a lot of calories.

I did it more as a willpower thing though, because I don''t know how much weight I''d lose from doing it. Just wanted to remind myself that I am as happy as larry just drinking pellegrino. And let me tell you, it''s pretty funny being the only sober person amongst the happily inebriated!

I LOVE biscotti...it''s the texture that I just adore. I can''t get anywher near it. I''d eat too many.

It was a weird eating day...I was so busy that by dinner time I had only had a large serve of cereal (260 cal) and less than a cup of soup (100 cal). So for dinner we went and had Korean food and now I am sure I have eaten 2000 calories today.

At least I went to gyrotonics class!

Wow, so many posts to read through already! I don''t really remember everything I''ve read through, I have a genetically bad memory. Sorry.

Mara, hope the new dosage of meds works out and cures you of the pain. Jade, yay for fitting into those jeans again! TG, wow, a month without alcohol? I must have been drinking your share this month because I''ve been drinking more than I usually do.

So today....better than how I''ve been doing lately, but not as good as I would''ve liked. I think I may have consumed somewhere in the vicinity of 1800 cals today, and I haven''t started my workout yet, which will be about 20 minutes of skipping rope, which according to caloriecount.com, comes out to burn about 300 cals.

I''ve also broken out in a horrible rash. For the record, those of you looking for laundry whiteners and brighteners, do NOT buy RIT Laundry Whitener and Brightener. I had to run several loads of clean laundry through the wash again to rinse off any of the residue from the treatment, but my rash is not going away fast enough. Do NOT use if you have sensitive skin. It''s making it that much harder to workout because any friction causes it to itch like mad. And ointments don''t really help.

I''ve put some of the steel cut oats in a bowl of water to soak overnight, hoping that they''ll cook faster that way so I can have them for breakfast tomorrow morning. I''m going to try to go for a run in the morning, weather permitting. Bought myself a beanie, some ear bags, and a running jacket to keep me warm, so as long as it doesn''t rain, I''ll try to do a mile tomorrow.

Keep up the good work everyone, and please continue sharing food ideas! I''m going to get myself some of that Fage yogurt too....

Congrats on all the losses!

And jade, I can just imagine how excited you are on the pre-preggers. I still remember that feeling, and the last one was 16 years ago.

Ellen and Lorelei, you two have just dragged me kicking and screaming back into the 70s this morning. Stop it! I lived through Charlie's Angels and ABBA and bell bottoms the first time around--don't make me relive it all again this morning before I've even had my coffee! (

)

So I've stumbled across what most (maybe all!) of you will find to be the strangest "treat." The other night I was digging through the pantry looking for something to nibble on and I found these 100 cal packs of ritz crisps. Then I remembered that my great grandmother and I used to sit in front of the television and watch the Mike Douglas talk show (woah--back to the 70s again!) in the early evenings and she would put little smears of butter on ritz crackers for me, so I took those itsy bitsy crisps and put the tiniest bit of margarine on each one and for 140 cals I was in heaven! A little bit of fat for texture, a little bit of salt, and they're crispy--what more could you ask for?!

Anyway, I'm finding that on the days when we don't go out or the happy hubby doesn't cook a real dinner that I have a hard time find things to eat that get me to my calorie goal. For instance today:

150 cals oatmeal
350 cals chicken terraki bowl for lunch
120 cals banana
60 cals pudding cup
180 cals butternut squash soup from Campbells
70 cals bread (to toast for "croutons" in the soup)
100 cals oreo crisps
1030 TOTAL CALS

I was adding this all up in my head as I walked to work so I stopped for coffee this morning to get in another 85 cals in the whole milk, but that's still only 1115 and I'm trying to go a bit above 1200. This is pretty typical for me in terms of eating, but a few days I have crawled into bed and found that about 10:00 I'm hungry (which did not used to happen). Let me also caveat by saying that (1) there are days when go above my calorie range (like when we went to Smith and Wollensky, or even if the HH just makes a richer meal) and (2) I'm not depriving myself or anything; these are all things I want to eat and I feel like I'm eating enough in terms of volume, but what should I do? Eat bigger cal meals or snack more or both?

I may not be able to work out tonight because I'm taking a client to see some properties and we'll be out until at least 6:30 and most likely later. Hopefully he'll be zippy and I will get to the gym but I had forgotten, with the slow real estate market over the holidays how many evenings I'll spend in the early spring with my buyers. Ug.
