Lots of food for thought today (sorry for the pun)
THANKS for all the insightful posts.

Alj, you're spot-on! Yep, it's all about BALANCE.

Most of you know that I work for the Food Network- the subject of Food is one I think about DAILY, and not just in the context of what I'm putting into my mouth! Food is a complex thing. We need it to survive, but it goes so much deeper than that. Food means different things to everyone. It can be as elementary as a staple- an ingredient for life. But then there's also the celebratory aspect of it. Think about all the different activities in your life, and how food revolves around them. AAGH- I sound like I'm doing a pitch for the network! In the end, it's all about balance.

On another note, this afternoon I went in to the bridal salon where I bought my wedding dress last spring. I'm the MOH in a friend's wedding later this summer, and she wanted her gals to pick out dresses in the same color from that shop. I sooo dreaded going back in there and getting fitted. But get this...I'm down a size from last year! The size number is still horrific (why do bridal designers do that to us women?!), but it's progress! I so debated even going down another size, as I'm confident I'm on the right path to weight loss. But, I just couldn't do it. Better to be safe than sorry

evening all! came home and went for a 2.5m walk with portia, then made us bbq chicken quesadillas with TJ's bbq shredded chicken, garlic powder, red onions, and 2% monterey jack with la tortilla factory white flour tortillas. yummy, we both loved them. we also split a TJ salad. then for dessert we shared a hodgepodge of a few chocolate goodies and then a small bowl of mint chocolate chip slow churned ice cream.

rod, i hear ya about being a little obsessive about staying where you are...i think also for anyone who has lost a significant amount of weight, once they hit maintenance mode, i really believe that most people have a really hard time to try to keep it there. i am having a way harder time figuring out how to maintain consistently than it was for me to continue to follow the recipe that i found when i was losing weight. once it started working i just could keep going. i was on a mission, there was a goal. and now that the goal has been reached it's like ummm next goal? staying where i am? well that's no real fun!! hahaa. i have been maintaining just fine scale and body wise but i think mentally it's been very hard for me. my hope is just that the longer i do it, the easier it will become, aka the more rote than really needing to think about it eventually. and hopefully my body will continue to agree hehe.

anyway hope everyone had a great day and is looking fwd to tomorrow.
2.gif
and chargergrrl i totally agree re the celebratory aspect of food...i was just thinking this evening about how so many events revolve around food...most of the get togethers that people have or birthday parties or similar are food get togethers, people clustering around the dinner table or the BBQ or similar. so yes you have to find a balance for sure. hehee. because food never goes away!!

Hey WWTr''s!
35.gif
Certainly is an interesting thread so far this week what with all the "introspection!" I like it!

First, though...I am finally feeling almost normal after my recent surgery, I am driving to my parents'' home tomorrow morning for a much needed parental visit (they''re 5 hours south of us) and to celebrate a belated mom''s day. I''m taking our newest addition, Daisy, who''s our 8 month old beagle puppy, she''s potty trained now and my mother wouldn''t let me bring her a few months ago at Christmas because they just had new carpet installed, LOL! anyway I''m really excited and am bringing my gym shoes so i can do some walking around their land with her, she will just love it, I''m sure, all the new smells and sights. My swelling is down 90% (thank goodness I had the sense to stop smoking a few months ago, it has helped tremendously with my healing process!), and I feel like I''m back in the swing of things...I could probably go back to work but I got approved for 3.5 weeks short term disability leave and I am taking full advantage of my time now to travel and just have a break from working life. I feel a bit guilty for not going back early since I''m healthy, but whenever I have those guilt pangs it takes me about 2.2 seconds to get over it, LOL!

Mara, and Rod, I totally empathize with feeling like you have a different self image in your head than what you see in the mirror sometimes. when I was in high school I went through outpatient eating disorder therapy, I had a hard time with my self image back then and I struggled with it even after that throughout my early twenties, probably until I met my now husband at 24. At 5''10", I always had people asking me did I play basketball, or did I model, and I remember reading that Cindy Crawford back then was my height and weighed 115, and she was at the "heavy" end of the spectrum for modeling!
20.gif
I probably weighed 130 at that time but thought I really needed to lose 10-15 lbs or more and then I would be able to accept myself physically.
38.gif
I tend to take things to extremes, and in hindsight for about 6 years now I know that I was holding myself to standards I couldn''t achieve without becoming ill. My body is just not made to weigh 115, and at a size 8-10 now I''m happier than I''ve ever been, I''m healthy and I feel good, and everything is in good working order even if I can''t up and run a marathon next week! When I worry about the 10-15 pounds my body fluctuates with, I have to stop and remind myself that losing that just can''t be my goal in life and it won''t make me a better person either. In the past few years I''ve been focusing on volunteer work and getting involved in things that, while they encourage a healthier lifestyle, also revolve more around helping others which has been really good for me...that way the focus isn''t so much on my appearance, but my health and well-being mentally and emotionally.

Enough with the deep stuff!
2.gif
On a bright note, I have lost about 7-8 pounds since surgery, so I''m able to fit right into my fun spring/summer stuff from last year...a good thing because with my orthodontic and oral surgeon bills I''m not exactly in a place to go out buying lots of new things this year!

Good night all, keep up with the good work!

Happy Tuesday Team PS!

Nothing really new today. I will find out at 2 PM if I get to move further in the interview process for the one phone screen that went well yesterday. BUT, I would be floored I move ahead. They sent me the full job description and I'm really not qualified for the job. It's not in the field I've spent the last 20 years, but it is a very high level VP level position in an advertising and marketing company. I'm not even sure why they called me about the position as I lack many of the requisite skills. So, I won't be floored if (when) they tell me the client didn't feel I was what they were seeking........LOL

I'll be heading out to get a cup of coffee soon and then heading over to meet Charlie for lunch. This afternoon, I'll do some more job searching and then around 3 or so, head to the gym for a nice long and hard workout.

On the subject of goals, I agree with you Mara. Maintaining isn't too much fun. I much prefer having a goal to works towards. And since I realize I probably can't lose much more weight, I do know I can continue building muscle and making my body stronger. I just need to find the balance somewhere in there that let's me continue working on being healthy and having a better body, but also let's me indulge and have some fun.
11.gif
And we all put so much pressure on ourselves. For example, I have more upper body strength than Charlie. He has more lower body strength than me. He can do things with his legs I will likely never be able to do. And I can do more chinups and lift more weight than he may be able to. On Sunday we were working on the advanced unassisted chinups our trainer taught us. I can do them pretty well. But, he struggles with them. And he got really frustrated and started making negative comments about himself. It's amazing what he's accomplished, but there he was feeling like he hadn't accomplished anything.

Enough introspection already. I hope everyone has a great and healthy day!

alj i am hardly going to recognize you when i see you in a few weeks. between the two of us we'll have lost like 70 lbs since we saw each other last year. if you add in greg's accidental 5 it's 75. hehe. huge kudos to rich for dropping 50. don't you hate how easily it can come to the men sometimes?!?! hehe.

wanted to post this for the WWT'ers...esp those who are lurking and might need something to help them jump start their weight loss or something to boost them now that summer is almost here...it's something like 28 days to a summer body...while it won't help you drop a ton of weight in 28 days it seems like for those who just want to get maybe 5ish lbs off it could come in handy as a guide.

http://health.msn.com/guides/weightloss/articlepage.aspx?cp-documentid=100162524&GT1=10008

i also read the article they have in there about 'flat belly foods' which was pretty handy, and they have an eating plan where it is basically a list of items for an 1800ish calorie day and you can choose from about 1 of 10 things they have for breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner. so for those who are looking to follow a plan and like to make their own stuff, this might be helpful to you. i also like getting ideas for things to eat from these types of guides...though honestly 400 cals for breakfast is way too much for me because i get hungry again later so i try to consume less at breakfast than 400 cals so i can have a snack later!

speaking of flat belly foods...i wanted to quickly post a few things that we have lined up for dinner this week. someone was asking previously about 'quick dinners' that are healthy (maybe in the healthy recipe thread?) and i kind of have that down pat. here is what our week is shaping up like for dinners...i don't know when we are having what but this is the plan.

BBQ chicken quesadillas:
TJ's shredded bbq chicken, 2% jack shredded cheese, la tortilla factory tortillas, sliced red onion, garlic powder, mango papaya salsa: ~500 cals for 1 large quesadilla cut into 3 pieces; 1/2 TJ's green salad with sunflower seeds, shredded carrots, radish, and TJ's ff balsamic: 50 cals. total dinner: 550 cals

TJ's rosemary chicken and rice:
2 portions in the container: 350 cals each portion. add a side salad for 50-100 cals. oven roast some asparagus with a spritz of EVOO and garlic powder. total dinner: 450-500 cals.

TJ's Pizza and salad:
chicken, artichoke and mushroom pizza: 440 cals. side salad with TJ's ff balsamic: 50 cals. total dinner: 490 cals

Mexican'ish dinner:
TJ's black bean and corn enchiladas: 250 cals; side salad; 50-100 cals; a bit of spanish rice. total dinner: 400-450 cals

How I figure out what we are eating what for dinner, is based on the total cals. mostly things like how heavy was my lunch? then i have a lighter dinner. or if i had a lighter day, i might have a heavier dinner and add a bit of extra cheese or eat a larger salad or something. it's pretty adaptable.

for any of these, I get the lighter cal item and greg almost always gets a higher one. aka in his quesadilla i doubled the cheese. his pizza is 700 cals whereas mine is 440. his enchiladas from TJ's are 500 cals and mine are 250. All of this stuff takes like 15 minutes to 'assemble' for the most part or cook in the oven and we are done with a full on dinner on the table. so anyway next time someone needs ideas, hope remembering this helps. i like getting pre-packed stuff or 'elements' of a pre-pack (aka whole foods spanish rice or brown rice or similar) and then assembling things at home and/or adding to it as well for a more 'well rounded' dinner.

anyhow, breakfast was fiber one, 1/2 fage 0%, splenda, cinnamon and blueberries, tasty!! lunch will be a TJ burrito..mmmm. snacks are hodgepodge but i make room for my little candy snacking now and it's just easier that way hehee. gym later. hope everyone has a fabulous tuesday!!!

oh and rod, i totally agree re: making the body stronger. i actually like doing a little more weight training and resistance now that i have met my goal weight. it might be responsible for the ~1lb scale increase in the last month that has hung on, because i am carrying a lot of muscle now, but i like feeling strong and seeing my muscles work. so yeah that's kind of my goal too, just to stay and continue to be stronger!

Since I see I''m not the only one who enjoys this little pleasure, thought I''d post my recipe for Pecan Pie. I''ve not seen another one like it, and I find it delish.
18.gif

Melt together (I use the microwave for this) in large bowl:

1 stick butter
1 c. sugar (I actually use a tad less)
1 c. Mrs. Buttersworth Syrup

Beat in:

3 large eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
1 c. pecans

Pour in uncooked pie shell of your choice and bake at 325 for 45-60 min. (til crust is nice golden brown)

Enjoy!

congrats to alj and charger on the weight loss. monarch, glad to hear you are feeling better. kimberly, have a fabulous time on your vacation. rod, hang in there, i''m sure you will find a great job soon. and mara, the bikes sound like fun. i really need to get out on mine more...

so i worked out on friday and saturday, but sunday i got hit with a cold and have just been too exhausted to do anything since. i''m actually home from work today because i have been feeling worse each day and i figured i would try to take it easy and hopefully get thru this faster. yuck. i am still keeping up with my healthy eating since i can''t exercise. i''m also loaded up on vitamin c and have been eating tons of fresh fruit, hoping it will help soon!

i made a cooking light chocolate souffle cake as a comfort-food treat last night. definitely satisfied my chocolate craving for 150 calories. i''ll put the recipe in the recipe thread for anyone who''s interested.

hola! I so did not need to see that pecan pie recipe.... yum......!!!!

So last night we checked out this new ice cream parlor near us... it was SOOO good. We split a small between the two of us and it was plenty to enjoy. I think that moderation is the key and so I am always looking for ways that we can avoid feeling deprived yet incorporate healthy lifestyle changes, and I think that was a good example of how to do it. (We enjoy dessert maybe once a week - we wouldn''t go every day!)

I''m doing the small meals, and it''s going pretty well so far, although I forgot yesterday afternoon''s snack and ate a bigger dinner. I think I''m going to have a sushi roll this afternoon when I go to the grocery..... already looking forward to it!

We checked out a couple gyms last night and picked the one we want. Near us there were two alternatives. Has anyone been to Planet Fitness? It is a neat philosophy, all about general fitness and NOT a "meat head" gym, and very affordable - some plans were only $10/mo which is ridiculously cheap. It was a short drive and we liked the manager. However, we were prepared to pay more and we weren''t that into the decor or overall feel of the place. They also didn''t have any group fitness classes, which I really like. It was hard to walk away from such a great deal but the other club appealed to us a lot more and I did think it was worth it. The other club is a local chain, much more upscale, even more convenient, lots of great fitness classes, and more amenities. We decided we will join it for 6 months (this will avoid start up costs) and see what we think. It will work out to $68/mo, which is more than our old gym, but I think pretty comparable for the area. So, I''m off to join there right now! can''t wait!

Mara, thanks for the dinner ideas. I will have to check out TJ''s! We just have one in our area but it''s not too far away.

Also, Mara, I am thinking of getting a bezel pendant similar to the one you got your sister! Your pics show a thinner bezel than what''s on WF''s website. Did you have them modify it, and if so did that make it "custom"? Have you ever seen their regular bezel and did you think it was too thick? I''m looking at a .25 to .33 stone. Sorry for the threadjack but I knew that you checked this thread and I didn''t know if you saw my other one (help me pick my graduation present). thank ya!

i'm just going to ignore that pecan pie recipe..definitely doesn't belong in the WWT!! i love pecan pie, but i would probably never make it...it's just too tasty and i probably would eat the whole pie tin. oh, if you add up ellen's recipe and divide it amongst about 8 pie servings, it works out to be about 560 cals per slice. hope that helps.
3.gif
better than a local restaurant's pie which is more like 1000 including the scoop of ice cream lol. lorelei, mrs butterworth's is a fake maple syrup that is popular here...i am not a real maple syrup fan so this is what have used previously on pancakes before getting into the sugar free stuff...it's something like 220 cals per 1/4c if not a little more. it is very buttery tasting!

gail....when i had WF make my sister's bezel pendant i asked them to thin out the bezel as much as possible. they basically had a stock adwar or whatever bezel (like they buy it already made from one of those stock places) and they modified it to my liking. i just didn't want the metal to overwhelm the stone because my sister's stone was so small, i think it was a .15? it turned out great. in terms of making it custom, no, thinning out the bezel didn't really add much extra to the cost, maybe like a $50 fee or something for modifications? i can't even remember. but it wasn't like it added on any sort of significant cost to have them thin it out. i would definitely ask about it. i really love her pendant and have tossed the idea around about getting one for myself. i do want a larger pendant than my regent but i am unsure if i want another solitaire 4 prong in a larger size, aka .75c or if i want to bezel set a slightly smaller stone aka a .50c and go that route. i love things i can wear daily and i wear my regent daily but sometimes i would like to switch it out with a slightly larger stone/pendant when whatever i am wearing could use a little extra punch. anyway hope this helps!!

shortblonde, did you try that mango spread you bought, i have been curious how you liked it?? i just finished one jar of mango butter but i have another in the pantry for fage-ing...hehe. yummy re: the CL souffle, i have a recipe or two along the same lines but just have not gotten around to making it!!

Thanks Mara! I guess what I meant was, I know you can''t return custom stuff. If you had needed to return her pendant after the modifications, do you know if that would have been allowed? I almost never return stuff but it''s nice to have the option. I really like the thin bezel from Bluenile and I could choose an AGS000 ideal, but then I wouldn''t be able to upgrade my stone.

Again, much apologies for the threadjack. Once I decide to definitely move forward, I will start a new thread!

Oh no I don't think I could have returned the pendant after having it modified. But the overall $$ outlay was not that much, so I wouldn't have returned it anyway...esp since it was as gift. And I knew my sister would love it.
2.gif
I actually have looked at the BN thin bezel pendant previously as well and when I talked to WF about it originally, their initial comment was that the BN thin bezel might not be that quality based on how low priced it was. I never have seen the BN thin bezel in person but I agree that I like it as well. But I think that the 'thin bezel' idea also depends on how large the stone is. Put a 1c into a stock bezel and the bezel is going to look a lot thinner than a .30c stone or similar. So not sure how 'accurate' the BN picture is, if that makes sense. Do you know?

Yes, I completely agree. Someone on got a .25 pendant from BN (I think for her 25th b-day, but I can''t remember who) and the proportions look just right. When I look at the WF pics, the bezel looks really thick for the size stone I''ll be getting. On the plus side I guess that will make the pendant look bigger! I guess I can ask them if they can order a different stock bezel - maybe adwar or stuller makes a thinner one that they can order. Do you think that a .33 ish pendant will look substantial enough to notice in a bezel? My earrings are .34 ea.

Yes I think it''d be substantial enough, you did see my neck pictures right? I had a picture with both her necklace and my solitaire on as well. My sister''s .15c in the thinner bezel looks basically like my .38c Regent solitaire with no bezel. So a ~.35c stone would be probably visually more like a .50c solitaire w/no bezel?

For me it''s about proportions too. I just don''t like a lot of metal overwhelming the stone, it should ''add'' to the piece not take it over in my opinion. I''d see what WF can get in as thin as possible without having to modify...and go from there!

Interesting article about how to lighten up basically any recipe for us budding healthy chefs..hehe. I love the tip about processing the nuts/crushing them because of the more even distribution and then you can use less, I totally do this...aka when I do walnuts in a salad I use walnut pieces rather than 1/2 or whole walnuts because then you still get the nut taste but it''s a more even flavor with less cals.

Hi All,

Can you help me please,

So our friend's we are going to tonight just informed me we will pick up Outback Steakhouse. Their website has a section for diets and has a healthy weight loss section, but it does not list calories. What would you guys get/do?

This is so unlike me to care, I would usually just go with it, but I have been doing so well during the week, I don't want to blow it.

Thanks,

M

ETA: I think I just found the breakdown on CalorieKing.

yeah you can just google Outback and calories and a bunch of sites have the breakdown of some of their menu. i typically do this whenever we go anywhere that's like a 'chain' because a lot of places have their nutritional information online or someone else has posted it.

i vaguely recall from looking around previously that their Victoria's Filet is like 550 cals or something? and you can get steamed veggies no oil or butter which is like 80ish. and a plain dry baked potato, and ask for salsa or something to mix into it if you want. or you can use the veggies to mix into the baked potato. if you want, get some butter on the side and just use a bit. since i am kind of a freak i might even bring my own shredded 2% cheese to mix into the potato...because you can put a bit in a baggie and not look too weird sprinkling it on hehe.

stay away from anything else basically. i THINK their shrimp, (aka side of shrimp) might not be too bad but i think they use oils and butters to cook it. good luck!!

I only make them about 3 times a year, and we usually have company, so it gets eaten up quickly and I''m not tempted anymore.

And I guess technically it''s a fake maple syrup, but compared to real maple syrup, I don''t taste the maple part at all. Just buttery.

Hi All!!!

I got exercise in this morning; I went for an 1hr 1/2 walk and also, mowed our lawn. I feel pooped but good!!!!! I have something going on tonight so I thought I would get exercise in early.
