Wedding set help! Do I need a spacer??

So I wanted to have a diamond wedding band just to wear as a RHR since I was SOOOO sure that I just want to wear my e-ring alone. But after the WF band came and I put them together, it was blinding my eyes and my FI even agreed with me that they look great together. The problem is, the band is about 0.3mm-0.4mm higher than my e-ring so I'm trying to sell it to fund another band.

However, I wouldn't have a problem if it doesn't sell and would like some advice on if I need a spacer for the two rings or not.(my e-ring is a setting with milgrain on the side so the melees are covered) I don't really like the look of a spacer but If it will damage the two bands without one I'll for sure get one. Please help!

Oh yeah, Min you do. Do you see the spot at the top of your band where it hits the basket of your e-ring? Your band will wear a groove
on both arms of the basket. It doesn't take very long either. If you don't wear it exactly the same way every day, you will get the groove on both sides of your ring.

It is a huge bummer, I know. I have damaged two settings this way. One that really bothered me, my w-prong, and the second was a semi bezel setting that I knew was temporary, so I didn't care that much.

Protect your ring if you love it. Luckily, now on etsy, you can get a really thin, pretty inexpensive, knife band spacer. The knife band
is so thin! It is the least intrusive option, imho.

I agree...I dont think the bottom donut is holding your shared prong off the basket of your ring. Time for a spacer.

Min- have you thought about asking WF to shave the height/depth off some so it would be less taller? I'm sure they can do it with this band as it looks plenty thick (would reduce the metal from the inside and then resize it slightly), I would think it cost less than to get a whole new ring. Just a thought. But it looks lovely together.

you asked just what I want to ask too. I try to find a 1mm 18kwg(will 14k wg be ok? since both rings are 18k wg) knife edge spacer on Etsy for awhile but with no luck~

I'd wait to see the reduction (if possible) first then test it again, before committing to a spacer.

She said it will make the setting too thin to support the diamond and something like that. Although I don't think she is a technical jeweler.

It wouldn't be as much of a problem if the band were not a shared prong band. You could get a bead set band, and no diamonds are exposed then, so they won't saw away at your prongs. Shared prong bands are trouble though.

My 5 stone hits on my e-ring about the same height and I do not wear them together very often and I have dents in my prongs from my 5 stone so yes if you are wearing together all the time you will need a spacer....I want to get mine reset so its not an issue...but that is way down the road...I dont have room on my finger for a spacer...so I just dont wear them together very often

I had the same problem (of scratching the prong basket) with my ering and shared prong diamond wedding band. My ering is the same setting as yours, but without the diamonds on the band. My RB is also smaller than yours at a .62ct (AGS000, G, SI1), so the basket might stick out less. I wanted to show you what I got as a spacer. I found a 1mm 14k band on ebay

I wear this combination when my fingers are more swollen and I want to wear the ering and diamond band together.

I also purchased a 2mm WG domed wedding band (from e-wedding bands) to wear all the time. Now in the colder weather, I wear the 2mm domed band and the diamond shared prong together all the time. (couldn't attach it here, in next frame) I can now also wear the diamond band, 2mm domed and the ering together. My diamond band is a 2mm also, but I think it may stick out a tiny bit less than your band.

Wearing your diamond wedding band as a RHR is also a good option, until you decide what to do. I can't wear any of mine as right hand rings (finger is a 4.75). All the rings above are a size 4.

I hope that this gives you an idea of how they all could look in the various options together.

P.S. Sorry that rings look dirty, they were clean. Hard to get a good picture with my camera skills

I have few question about your spacer. 1: I noticed it's 14kwg, are your bands 14k or 18k wg? both of my bands are 18k but I'd like to stay with 14k wg if it works just fine to keep the cost down. 2: how does the 1mm work for you? people told me it will be too thin and will bent easy (especially I'm looking for a knife edge one), as much as I'd like to keep the spacer as thin as possible, I wasn't sure if I should go with 1mm or 1.5mm.

For me, a spacer changes the look so much that I don't have the same love for a shared prong band anymore. I just wear my rings and live with the damage To me it looks like there is not a huge amount of contact, I don't think the damage will be horrendous.

I know, that's why I was trying to find a thin one with knife edge. The good thing is I'm not gonna get married any time soon so I can have plenty time to decide what to do..

I think a spacer is needed~ I do wear a spacer with mine but that is because my WB is too huge and thick and the spacer (which was my original WB) is too thin, so nobody actually notice the spacer especially when it was Pink Gold, it kinda gel into my skin color.

At first, I felt the same way Dreamer does about spacers, but the more I wore mine the less it bothered me. It also depends on how much the damage to your ring will bother you. I knew I didn't want any damage to my Leon which was by far the most expensive setting I have
ever had. It didn't bother me at all with the temp setting I had.

Here is a photo that I think shows how little a knife edge spacer can be seen. IMO, it doesn't quite change the look as much as a flatter
band does.

I noticed that before I bought the 1mm spacer my ering prong basket already (under a 10x loupe) had little scratches from the diamonds on shared prong. The 1mm 14k spacer seems to be the right height, about the same as the donut at the base of the basket of the ering. You can see that pretty well in the side view of the three rings together. I think that the height of the 1mm band is about 1mm too.

I was also a little concerned on whether the 1mm spacer would be too thin and bend if it got hit or otherwise with everyday use. I know that 14k is a little stronger than 18k, (14k has less gold in it) so I felt pretty good that it would hold up well. (I also wanted to keep costs down). I had noticed that my 18k ering seemed to show a little more wear more than other pieces of 14k jewelry that I own. (if James Allen had offered a 14k version of the "Timeless" setting, I probably would have chosen it over the 18k) So far, I've been wearing the ering, spacer, and diamond shared prong together and they are holding up quite well. I'm very happy with the spacer and it's doing its job beautifully.

Sometimes it does bother me that there is a gap between my ering and the 1mm spacer, but I've gotten used to it now. I don't really see it anymore. The diamond in the ering and the diamonds in the band sparkle so much, that you don't even notice the small gap. If our erings didn't have the donut at the base of the basket, there wouldn't be a gap between the spacer and ering. When I was choosing a setting, I fell in love with our ering settings; light, airy, classic, and delicate, and none of the others styles had that particular look.

I think that the knife edge that you are considering is very pretty and will be very discreet together with your rings. You probably won't see much of a gap since it looks thin and tall. The Etsy spacer lists it at 1.5mm wide and 2mm tall.

Thank you so much! I'll look into the knife edge also lastnight I was looking on some Chinese website where they have some really cheap 14-18k spacer, I'm going to China next summer so I may shop around there to see if I can find anything nice.
