Hi all..

I''''ve finally decided on a mount for my diamonds (Not sure if you''''ve been following my threads, but I''''m having a ring made with a .50ct princess cut diamond in the middle, and two 10pt argyle pink diamonds on each side)..

And, as stated above, I''''ve finally decided on a mount for my diamonds..

I''''ve shown the picture below to my jeweler and he replied saying that the side diamonds will fall, should a slight knock occur to the side prong (the one coming from the band).. He believes it''''s a rather impractical design, and if the prong is so much as caught against something, it''''ll cause the diamond to fall off..

I guess it makes sense..

To strengthen it he recommends a plate around the two side diamonds.. Which he admitted it will not look good..

Can anyone suggest anything in regards to strengthening the design?
Furthermore, could someone support his claims of this being, in fact, a weak design?

I like it for two reasons:
1: It''''s different..
b: It shows the whole diamonds, and I love that look.. I love being able to see the whole shape of the diamond from the sides.. And this ring provides that whilst not being as traditional as some of the rings out there..

Thanks..

I.

Kissingfish - Here is LizzyD''s beautiful ring that has sidestones set similar to the pic that you showed. Check out both her wax pics at the top of the thread and the finished product several posts down (link). To the best of my knowledge she hasn''t had any problems with the setting. I''ve also seen several other rings of this style (even considered one myself) and I don''t think there is an issue unless the stones are not well set to begin with. Hopefully others will chime in here. You might want to have this thread moved to Rocky Talky for more traffic.

hhm.. yes.. How do I go about moving this thread to the other forum?

It''s somewhat similar, the link you''ve provided.. And i''d really like to know further details in regards to whether if she knocks the ring slightly against .. Anything.. Will the diamond simply pop out..

Which is what the guy said when we spoke about it..

Lizzy''s ring design looks a lot more secure to me that your "ideal" photo. Hers has the prongs of the side stones pressed right up against the prongs holding the center stone .. that configuration seems like it would be a LOT sturdier! A knock on the most likely to be knocked ends would push all the stones toward each other. A SNAG, however, could bend that tiny far prong back and the side stone may be lost.

DEF DEF insure the ring. If you lose a stone, you''ll be able to replace it then right?

I will say, after having a ring that snagged on a lot of stuff, and prongs loosened TWICE after having the ring a short time ... I LOVE the redesign that doesn''t have lots of places to get snagged, and is very much "tighter" and more secure.

Don''t JUST pay attention to "the LOOK" and "how different" it is. Sometimes things are "different" or "less popular" because a lot of people see the potential for problems with a certain design.

Would platinum rings cause the ring to be more sturdy than if it were white gold?

Please note.. The picture file wasn't attached when the thread was moved.. Please fix.. Or to whoever wishes to help, view picture here:
