We paid off our house

Huge congratulations @Begonia, that's amazing!! You're amazing :kiss2:

I still don't get the negativity thing. We encountered similar attitudes/snide comments when we paid our home off, I wish others could just be happy for you when something great happens.

But nuts to them...just enjoy your incredible accomplishment!!!!

My kids have never known hunger, we have a safe and warm roof over our heads. I'm rich in the ways that matter.

We can't tell anyone as it just brings up negative emotions from people: resentment, jealousy, and some other weird stuff I'm not qualified to name. So I'll say it here. Yes, for all those sacrifices we made, the feeling today is relief and gratitude that debt is gone.

Congratulations @Begonia ! It's a big accomplishment you should be proud of. I'm hoping now that you no longer have a
mortgage payment that you can take care of some of the stuff you need to do (hello, root canal) and then do some of the fun
stuff that you WANT to do (spa, travel, jewelry, etc.). It is a big deal!

Congratulations! It’s a weight off your shoulders to know you own your house. My grandfather left me enough money to pay ours off so I know the feeling. I don’t understand why anyone would make snide remarks. We have never had anyone say anything.

Good job! (We paid ours off in April, but I think I'm a good bit older than you, so not a big of an accomplishment. But its such a relief to have that done)
 
Congratulations!!!! It is very impressive. It’s not easy passing up “fun” stuff to make this happen and I admire your long term vision and rationality.

I know of a couple whose husband got laid off when they were in mid 50s with 15 years left on their house note (wife had been a stay at home mom for years) and it was SO STRESSFUL for many years and required them to drain their 401k. I felt bad for them and it taught my husband and I a lesson on being more financially conservative (as unfun as that can be in the moment).

Totally don’t understand either how not everyone can be happy when something great happens (especially when it required sacrifice on your end ). I think it triggers some insecurity within themselves. I’m glad you shared it here! Many years of health and happiness to you!
 
This is the best news! There is nothing more secure than knowing you own every brick & roof tile, should times get tight. It's just a huge security.

Poo poo to the miseries who cannot enjoy this moment with you. People can be weird around others success in general, but when it comes to paying off mortgages & having that emotional burden lifted, they can be REALLY weird.

Congratulations!! Anyone who isn’t happy for you is not worth your time. It’s a huge accomplishment and you should feel very proud.
 
congrats, we paid ours off in March right after hubby retired...so it is a relief not to have the debt hanging over you :appl:

Ah, what relief! It was the best feeling ever for us! We started out very young and built our little house. These days, we are doing some messy upgrades, but necessary and worth it hopefully! Enjoy your home!

Firstly, huge congrats on such a milestone!

We were quite disciplined, and felt fortunate to be able to pay off our mortgage when we inherited some funds. We, too, kept very low key about it, not due to negativity but rather because at the time, we had a lot of friends who were still paying mortgages, and we preferred not to draw attention to our situation. If that makes sense!

Being mortgage-free was/is a gigantic relief for us for peace of mind. We then kept putting the same payments into a savings account, and when COVID hit, DH was able to take early retirement because we had no mortgage, and had an extra bit of "nest egg". Talk about feeling free to do what we want! Every day, we feel so blessed, and grateful to have made the decisions we did.
