We paid off our house

We paid off our house. We took money from our savings and put the last 47k on it this weekend at the bank. It was a pretty big moment for us. We thought long and hard as my husband's job is not secure.

I feel conflicted: relieved, proud and questioning our choices in life to get to this point. I was a stay at home mom for many many years, and have always underearned once I did get back full time. Paying off the house represents choices: not going on holidays, driving older cars, not eating out, no spa treatments or tucks for this middle age gal, not having new clothes and (especially to me LOL) not buying bling or buying inexpensive bling. I may never have that holy grail blue sapphire I dream about, and I've never dared dream about a holy grail OEC.

On the other hand, we've always had the funds on hand for our needs (vs our wants). I'm in need of a root canal (bloody tooth pain is killer), and have that scheduled. I can afford to do that. My kids have never known hunger, we have a safe and warm roof over our heads. I'm rich in the ways that matter.

We can't tell anyone as it just brings up negative emotions from people: resentment, jealousy, and some other weird stuff I'm not qualified to name. So I'll say it here. Yes, for all those sacrifices we made, the feeling today is relief and gratitude that debt is gone.

Congrats!!! It's so nice to see such good news nowadays...
Won't your dentist see you on a rush basis??
OMG, there's nothing worse than tooth pain!

This is amazing, a big congratulations on a huge accomplishment.

In the spirit of keeping this thread positive, I won’t comment on the “friends” ;)2

This is great news. Reducing debt is priceless.
Don't let others bring you down, this is a great accomplishment!

Congratulations! What a huge accomplishment you should be proud! I'm sorry your friends dont see all the daily sacrifices you have made to get here!

Congratulations, @Begonia! A testament to a lifetime of self discipline and wisdom.

Congrats to you! It definitely is an amazing feeling to be rid of such an expensive debt every month. I understand your hesitation to share such with people irl. It's amazing how the green-eyed monster can show its ugly head, especially from ones who are quick to lecture about working too hard, or not "enjoying life". Been there.

Congratulations, Begonia! What a great accomplishment!

Mazel Tov @Begonia!
I think that’s a wonderful accomplishment and good for you! ❤️

Congratulations.

Congrats! I think owning your house/property or land is more important than bling.

Congratulations! What a wonderful accomplishment! And, oh what a feeling!!
Funny story. When Mr. Slickk and I paid our mortgage off at the local bank, I kinda expected some balloons to cascade down upon us or something! Hehe! It felt so momentous. As we were leaving, ever so giddy with the staff and light footed, walking toward the side exit when the woman yelled, “It’s a big step!” I, obviously, thought she was speaking about our payoff status. I turned and agreed, “Yes, such a big step!!” She then said, to our continued amusement, “No, be careful, it’s a big step out that side door!!”

Anyway! Congratulations on the dream!! It’s so worth it!

Congratulations!

DK :appl:

Congratulations! Don’t let anyone spoil that feeling for you. We felt a tremendous sense of relief when we paid our house off even though paying the mortgage wasn’t a struggle. It is just the idea of OWNING it out right that is so thrilling! I would much rather have that than bling. As much as I love beautiful diamonds, your home can greatly appreciate over time.
