My husband and I are looking to purchase a diamond for a wedding setting I already have and we are so clueless. We do know that we don''t like the mall salespeople and feel jewelry is overpriced if we go that route. We really don''t know a thing about diamonds and our budget for the stone is $4000. Can someone please steer us in the right direction? My setting is antique filigree with pave diamonds and I really want to stay consistent with the antique look by having an antique style stone. I''ve heard that cushion cuts and asscher (sp?) cuts might be good for that. If anyone can suggest something that would help us, we''d really appreciate it. Thanks so much.

Start by looking at the tutorial here on Pricescope. If you don't know what shape you want yet, go through that area. AND, when you have an idea of what shape you may want, it wouldn't hurt to go see them first to make sure they look in person the way you'd want them to look.

You're probably restricted in what shape diamond you can put in there by the shape and size of the setting in the first place -- a setting for a marquise just isn't the same for the setting for a round. I know in some cases a jeweler can alter the setting for other sizes and shapes of stones, but that's not something you're going to be easily able to determine on your own.

So you're trying to back into this a bit... I would find a jeweler who is reasonably local and very good at this sort of thing to help you out, otherwise it will probably be difficult to determine what you're looking for.

Would you mind posting a picture of the setting? I love antique settings

Hey Tedders! Welcome to PriceScope!

Absolutely agreed with Hest! Get a good idea of the cuts you like first by seeing them in person. Also, when you go to sites on PriceScope of the vendors that sell such stones, you can see some comparative pricing, and I am sure it is most likely a copetitive price to those jewelers in your area.

Maybe you can post a picture of the setting to see what many people can recommend a nice cut choice to compliment it...? I always like the look of the Cushion Cut, the Old European Cut, the Asscher Cut, and possibly the Flanders Cut... you have lots of choices, depending on your likes and dislikes...

Good luck!

Can someone tell me how to post a picture? Do I need a digital camera; if so, that's a problem because I don't have one nor do I have a photograph of my setting. Also, the prong things aren't on the top of it so is that going to make a difference with the type of stone?

You could take a photograph of the setting, and then scan it with a scanner. Perhaps a friend has a digital camera or a scanner you could borrow? You'll probably want several clear pictures of the setting from different angles.

When we bought it, the jeweler emailed us several pictures of it. I will see if I still have those and try to figure out how to attach them here. Thanks again for all the assistance!!
