Hi all. I am a newbie who is in love and obsessed with all of the great posts and information you all are kind enough to provide. I, like many others have been lurking for some time.

This is my first post which is driven by diamond stress

. My future fiance and I have found what I think is the "perfect" cushion. After a bit of searching, we''ve finally found one that talks to us, if you know what I mean. Anyway, the problem is that the stone is an "antique" and uncertified. The seller states that it is an i color, 2.41 carat stone. It is eye clean and has a very beautiful cut ( I''ve learned that with cushions there is no such thing as ideal). My question is, what would be a fair price and what is that based on? Does it make sense to look at comparable stones from EGL or IGI which are normally discounted off of the more respected labs? Is it all open to negotiation? We like it but are really concerned about - getting ripped off and/or having a large sum of money tied up in this stone through appraisal periods, etc,. if we have to pursue a refund if the stone turns out to be of a lower quality than alleged. To me, it is what it is and I would like to get a fair price up front. Bottom line, what is an uncertified, 2.41 carat, I color, VS2/SI1 stone worth?

Your input is badly needed as we need to committ within the next few days.

I would ask the seller if he would agree to have it appraised by a lab like GIA or AGS - tell him you''ll pay for it if it does end up being an H/I VS2/SI1, and that he''ll pay for it and you''ll walk away if it''s not. If that''s not an option, I would not buy it without AT LEAST an independent appraisal from a very reputable gemologist (ask around on this board for one near you).

Right, fair, but not appraised...., certed..., have either labs or any other known labs like EGL, HRD, IGI (depending on your location) issue a certificate on the "antique" cushion. and dont be surprised if it categorized as an Old-Mine Brilliant.

If it was up to me, i wouldnt cert it at AGS, in my opinion they are much more profesional in RB''s and Princess cuts. (but i might be wrong)
I didnt see a lot of AGS certed cushions.
