Jet, a flat-black, opaque gemstone derived from wood that has experienced extreme compression over millions of years, was the haute stone throughout the Victorian era, a time when fashion and jewelry deftly signaled a person’s social status, financial wealth and even emotional state. Victorian dress was rife with symbolism and evolved around rigid codes of propriety and caste. Tightly pulled corsets and top hats, to name two ubiquitous items from the era, signified wealth and propriety, while jewels depicting doves hinted to an individual’s deep religious devotion.

There you go, I'll start hitting up the antique stores :)

We’re literally headed an hour up the coast tomorrow to Whitby to check out the jet shops, so this is very timely! There are a huge number of retail outlets and manufacturers/designers in the back streets - if you’ve ever read Possession by AS Byatt and seen the film adaptation, you’ll have seen some of the outlets. Clearly I need to start looking a bit closer…

love to see Jet getting some love:kiss2:

it so light to wear
it must be very satisiying to carve
and it feels beautiful -but fragile
i would love it to become more popular, but its soooo soft, you have to be so careful, i droped a bead and crushed it under my bare foot :-o

i would love to see some of the antique mourning jewellery taken out for a spin and given happier memories for those who have old inherited pieces tucked away in the back of drawers - especially the descendents of Queen Victoria who did so much for jet industry
but with 40 odd years of mourning HM then put 6 generations of her family and an entire empire/ commonwealth of nations off wearing it forever it seems ....
still black is always in fashion
