Was there a “Bench” sub-forum on PS years ago?

I first discovered diamond online message boards in 2003 after my daughter was born and I was a SAHM. I can’t remember if I was a member here during that time (under a different username), or if it was a different forum altogether. But in the one I’m thinking of, there was a Bench/Workbench subforum, and that was the only place the people on the trade really posted. And it was not like RockyTalky—No general setting questions and inquiries about help with diamond shopping. It was meant for very specific trade discussions or a prosumer with a custom question about design capabilities, for example.

I’m also remembering a user that showed up named DiDiamond or similar? I think she was named Diana from Florida who had about seven 3+carat rings and wanted to be sure she was in the right place with other diamond enthusiasts. Lol, she found the right place!

So, for the veterans of PS since 2003-2004ish, did PS ever have a Bench subforum?

I do not remember it, but my memory is really bad. I hope others who were here then will chime in. It may bring back my own recollections. I love to remember "the old days". I am glad you posted about this.

HI:

No recollection of this subforum--altho DiDiamonds rings are legendary.

cheers--Sharon

I came in Jan of 2006. There wasn't a Bench subforum at that time. But yeah, can't forget DiDiamond!

I tried searching old usernames that I may have used at the time, but I couldn’t find anything... I learned a lot during that early era for me. I seriously think I was online during DiDiamond’s intro post and I wanted to tell her, “OMG YOU FOUND THE RIGHT PLACE,” but I didn’t post regularly and wanted to stay in the background. :mrgreen2:

She had a couple large yellow diamonds, correct?

I don't remember a bench here or on the forum diamondtalk either. There were some jewellers who wrote about making jewellery though and over on diamondtalk there was a Mexican rocket engine or some other part inventor named Juan Van Graff, who made rings at certain times of the year and lots got rings designed by him. I remember this site though from a way back then and it seems to still be there, never been there since, it is about bench work and is at this link

Oh I remember DiDiamond and her huge rings too. Were they real though, there was someone who had lots of rings who it was discovered were not real, and I never knew who it was but always wondered if it was her or not.

Just remembered there was a site where rings were made individually, I remember Diamondangel getting her ring designed there with hearts in the gallery and a radiant diamond. I think it was called The Diamondtrader or The Diamond Trader Workshop. It seemed to just be one man and he posted all the stones up and then the rings. He always had new rings posted on a Friday and I learned a lot there too. Been on the internet but can't find it now. Too many diamond traders, if that was even the name of them.

Edit: Think it was called The Tradeshop.

facebook group is more like the old page and the link for it is in the MORE, THEN FAQ section. The website is not as open as it used to be.

You are a wonder! I had to do some poking around on-line. I had totally forgotten The Tradeshop and it was extremely ungrateful of me. Until I saw that The Tradeshop that I had known (and I cannot link to Facebook due to the controls set on my computer, so I had to find the correct Tradeshop via Google), I didn't know it was the one in Portland, Oregon. When I saw it was that one, I saw it was owned by Ray Elsey. Many years ago when I was on an on-line forum I talked to him on-line. he was a wonderful gentleman and he surprised me by sending me some jewelry, I believe a pair of earrings, out of the blue as a gift. Just because he was such a nice guy! I hadn't been a customer or a prospective customer. How could I have forgotten that?

Back in the 2003 time period which is when I joined PS, the Trade posted pretty much exclusively on RockyTalky here and I dont recall a subforum called bench or workbench.

I did a search designed to find any Pricescope posting from when I first joined that would have involved a bench jeweler and did not find one except in Rocky Talky, just as Karl said. Of course Leonid could have erased all traces of a sub-forum that was once here, but I see no reason for him to have done so. After all, this sub-forum was apparently about making jewelry; it wasn't like The Steam Room!

During my search I also found saw that I joined my first on-line diamond forum on the 'net on March 3, 2000 as A Girl's Best Friend (which is where AGBF comes from). I knew I was on that forum when the planes struck the Twin Towers on 9/11 of 2001, but I thought I had been on it for longer than that before then.

There used to be a competing forum called Diamond Talk, later renamed Diamond Ring, that had a "Bench Work" section. I don't remember if Pricescope ever had one. They might well have. I think Pricescope has been redesigned a couple of times/

I did not want to name Diamond Talk, although it no longer exists under that name, but that was the forum about which I was thinking as I tried to remember if there was a bench work sub-forum where I started out posting. In fact, I started to think of some of the bench jewelers who posted on that forum and do not post here. One was Joe Bacon. Another, Juan Van Graff, has already been mentioned. He made me rings for which I really must show a photo to Niel. I asked him to make them to replace a ring I got as a gift as a teenager but then lost in a theft.

@Niel The rings Juan made are not as tapered from the shank to the head as your solitaire is. I do not know if I even have any of them anymore, but if I ever had one made again, I would make sure it was more like yours in shape!
