Long story short I have been dealing with some jaw/teeth issues since before Christmas.
This is why I have not been around as much.
I had a very hard time finding someone who took my insurance who was willing to touch them. After waiting for days they would freak out over my blood thinners and refer me to a place in Chicago that had no appointments available.
I found one who would work on me, he pulled 4 teeth and a couple random roots left over last week and because I can not do nsaids he prescribed 4 day supply of low dose norcos. No problem.
Had 4 more teeth pulled today and same deal...
Insurance company denied payment, you can only get 1 prescription per 30 days.
The pharmacist called and explained the situation and no go. No one cares.
I ended up paying cash for them using a goodrx discount card so it was not a lot but still.
 
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this Karl.
Years back my ex had spinal surgery after which his doctor prescribed morphine.
It was nearly impossible to get the Rx filled, though we finally did.

I understand narcotics are widely abused, but it's ironic they make them so hard, or impossible, to get when folks legitimately need them. :angryfire:
Then insurance companies are another curse on America. :wall::doh: :nono:

teeth pain is dreadful
insurence companies seem to think they know better than doctors (or dentists)

So sorry to hear you are suffering @Karl_K . I really despise these insurance companies. I hope you get some relief soon!! Feel better!!
 
I’m so sorry @Karl_K It is infuriating that the people who need pain meds can’t get it. I’ve been there, it’s awful. I hope you can find some relief soon. I know it’s not completely helpful, but when in pain, I take up to four ibuprofen (4-6hrs) and then piggyback some extra strength acetaminophen in. I also had terrible jaw problems btw.

Bad part of having it done late afternoon is that its still in the most painful phase as the last of the numbing wears off is right at bedtime.

would bonigela help take the edge off Karl
i keep some in the first aid box and found it helpful when i cracked a tooth and the nerve was exposed - i also took ibuprofen
i know over the counter medicine wont work as well as what you cant get but as you heal it might help ?????

Thanks for the idea.
Both of them are a no go with blood thinners.
Pretty much everything otc other than Tylenol is out.

This sounds awful -- I'm so sorry, @Karl_K!

Not the first choice -- which you can't seem to get -- but what about eugenol (oil of clove)? I am not a believer in (nearly all) alternative/"natural" therapies but this one works, IIRC.
 
Ice packs! 20 minutes on, and then off for a while before repeating. You don't want to get frostbite (not joking.)
The application of cold helps 2 ways:

1. It slows down the speed at which the pain messages travel down the length of your nerve fibers to your brain.
Here is why: Pain messages travel along unmyelinated (i.e. uninsulated) nerve fibers. Being uninsulated, these fibers are affected by cold-- cold actually slows down the transmission of the pain message.

This is why, then you stub your toe, you don't feel the pain immediately. You yelp, because you know the pain is coming, but it doesn't actually hurt for a teensy little while.

2. Swollen, inflamed tissues put pressure on the nerve endings in the area, causing pain. Cold reduces blood flow to the area, reducing swelling, and thus reducing pain.
 
@Karl, I hope you start to feel better soon. I was going to suggest asking your doctor about Ibuprofen but if you can’t take OTC meds this is probably a no go. I found ibuprofen worked the best after a mouth surgery years ago. I’m sorry you are in so much pain. Mouth pain is terrible.
 
So sorry for everyone who has to deal with this! It's UNACCEPTABLE.

My DH had two surgeries in the past two months and each time it was a struggle to get sufficient pain meds when he was released to go home. I mean he had to keep calling the drs offices and they would reluctantly send an RX for twenty 5 mg oxy pills at a time. I mean that is a weak RX and to do the required PT he had to take two 5 mg Oxy before each session (doing them twice a day) so you do the math on how long 20 pills will last. Ridiculous.

They do have him taking extra strength tylenol twice a day but it really isn't enough.
And he is icing 15-20 minutes at a time throughout the day.

These overly aggressive restrictions are hurting people. People who do not have an opioid addiction. Yet they are getting punished. Not OK IMO

@Karl_K, I am so sorry to hear of your pain. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to not be able to get acceptable pain medication. We seem to swing either too far one way (give them to everyone for everything) or too far the other way (no way no how no matter) in many things we do. I hope that you get relief and are able to rest. I just hate to hear this!

Dentists use oil of clove for dry socket.
 
Oh man, @Karl_K pulling 4 teeth at one visit is a bear! So sorry you are dealing with so much pain! I've had 2 extracted teeth (implants were placed later) but only one at a time, and luckily the second one was a year later. I was able to tolerate Advil for a couple of days, but it did make my tinnitus worse. Sending healing vibes and keep up the ice pack routine. I do remember my doctor saying after 3 days though the ice packs are not effective and you can switch to heat. Take care!
 
Bit out of it today. Had to go back this morning a couple were not clotting right,
If you want to gross yourself out look up liver clots.

You are SO right. The inability of those in pain to access pain meds is insanity.

My best friend (a nurse and nurse educator in Australia) had a fall over Christmas while out in Boston visiting me. She broke her arm - right up near her shoulder, broke her rib, collapsed a lung, and her face hit the road as well, giving her an almight black eye and the mother of all headaches. She has osteopenia/osteoporosis, and her bones just shattered like glass. Parts of the ball of her humerus/shoulder joint are now just floating around in the fluid in her joint socket. And it's about as comfortable as that sounds.

The ED gave her pain meds for 3 days.

This is just madness.

Thinking of you, Karl, and sending up prayers for you.
 
My dog had arthritis. He received 30 tramadol, refillable. I had surgery and was given 5!!!!! Luckily, I still had the dog's supply. :oops2:
 
Hope you're feeling better soon Karl...teeth issues can be so painful...from someone who broke a root, got an infection and
had to have an implant. The 4 teeth at once (X2) is making my skin crawl.
 
I have the misfortune of being allergic to most pain meds but I can't even imagine going through what you're going through right now @Karl_K We have failed those who really need the meds.
 
Whats weird is one of the extractions from last week is hurting worse than the ones from this week. He had to cut a lot of bone to get it out so he says that is not unusual.
My face is so swollen up I look like I was in a fight with Chuck Norris lol.
On the plus side was able to get 6 hours sleep with my bipap on last night. That lifted some of the brain fog.
