Gold prices are really taking the fun out of shopping. I am trying to get a simple sapphire pendant or earrings for my good girlfriend's B-day. I work in Chicago just a few blocks away from the jewelers malls on Wabash. I checked out everywhere-even a pawn shop and just a small sapphire set in gold is $150-300 depending on the store. The jewelers complain it is the gold price that makes it expensive-not the stone. Anything I saw set in sterling (big box stores) was terrible-blackish opaque stones. It is really a downer- I feel sorry for anyone who has to buy gold jewelry now. How is the industry coping?
