Vintage Rose Pink Spinel Ring - Yay or Nay?

Hi PS Friends,

I have been searching for an upgraded engagement ring and eyeing this vintage 3.60 rose pink spinel ring for awhile now. I love the elegance of this simple ring and the deep rose pink color which reminds me of a rhodolite garnet. I also like that the platinum shank is hand fabricated which I have heard is more durable than a cast ring.

The ring is now on sale for $3,550 and I am seriously tempted to buy it. However, I noticed in the pictures that there a couple minor scratches on the spinel's table, on one of the platinum prongs, and on the right side of the cathedral on the ring.

The spinel also does not seem as brilliant as some spinels due to the deep color and perhaps the elongated cushion cut.

Do you think this is a good deal for $3,550? And do you think the spine will hold up for daily wear as an engagement ring?

Thanks,
Mindy

It sounds like you really love the stone and ring! A few reasons why it may not look as brilliant to you as other spinels is, yes, the tone (it's a little deep, but not bad at all), the cut/shape (there's some windowing and it's also an elongated oval which often causes terminal extinction), and the clarity (I see a touch of silk). About the scratches... would you please point them out? I do see a couple of very minor girdle chips, but I imagine they'll be nearly invisible at eye level.

Wait, I think I see them... these guys? So the prong seems to have some very slight marring and then the shoulder has some very slight scuffing. I really think they're insignificant. But if they bother you, perhaps you can tell the seller that as part of the sale, you'd need those buffed out. Should be a very easy fix.

I’m not sure hand fabricated has any durability measure over cast, because cast items can still be called hand fabricated. Hand forged (drawing & fashioning from solid bits) is where the greater durability can come into play over cast. I don’t feel that’s an absolute blanket statement, though.

Autumn has great points I agree with - the only thing I can add is what color the rose color shifts to in other lighting than what they’ve taken the glamour shots in. And whether you like it.

I like the ring as a whole for that price - but wondering what it’ll do in direct sun (does it absolutely black out or dilute?), how extinction pattern shows while on the hand and if it’s annoying , and what it does in other lightings than the listing pictures (go more grey/brown) would be a thinking concern, for me.

If you end up asking for more pictures in alternate lighting - please do share!

The store this is from isn't known for great deals but they are known for being picky. Reach out to them and ask for more photos in other lighting if you have any questions.

......or maybe I should go take a look in person :evil2: Anyone want to join me?

I think them saying hand fabricated means hand forged, but you could always ask if it's important to you.

As for daily wear, it will depend on how you wear your jewelry. My sister has been wearing a garnet and sterling engagement ring every day for almost 15 years and it's in great shape. Other people are much harder on their jewelry. Most people find spinel fine for daily, reasonably cautious wear.

It’s a nice ring but this one looks like it has the potential to shift ever so brown under certain lights. Will you be ok with that? It’s one of the reasons I peaced out on pink spinels.

That said I own several so just be aware of their tendencies.

I was going to say the same! Not exactly as what mellow yellow said since she’s way more knowledgeable, but I was going to say that it looks like it’s brownish. More photos in different lighting would be really helpful!

Have you played the game of looking for similar spinel size and color that reminds you of rhodolite, and what it’ll cost to have a brand new ring made?
Sometimes I find that helpful.

check out Langs return policy. Seeing in person something that might always live wistfully in your mind, sometimes isn’t ‘lost’ money.

i think its soooooooo pretty :kiss2:
but for an ER id be worried about durability if its to be a daily wear

Nice piece! Stone has big girdle thats fantastic when u have damage during wearing for a pavillion recut in the future. The color looks like purplish red pr purplish pinkish red. I think the stone is dark and has an intense color. Thats an fantastic spinel, great size, very very good cut i dont know that u would get more for that price. The small chips on the outside, you can live with that. Great Spinel woth PT Ring that u have found with an great price tag
