Vintage Rings - Opinions on Price?

Thanks Lexie! Yes, I''ve been looking at some items from that eBay store for a while as well. I''m not sure about the ones that have the wire shanks though. I''ve been looking at vintage rings for a few years now and I''ve yet to see another one from that era that has a wire shank like that - and there are 3 or 4 in that webstore at any given time. Makes me think they''re new rather than vintage (that plus they''re not cast which it seems most of the rings from that era seem to be. Either cast or stamped.....) But yeah, TOTALLY my style as well. I''ll keep my eyes peeled for ones you''d like too! You checked out "GoAntiques"? Some nice stuff on there too......

I guess we''re the only ones who like vintage cocktail rings on here! Not many comments about all the pics I''ve posted on this thread. Maybe I''ll post a pic of a 2 carat, round brilliant solitaire to get everyone''s attention! lol.

Is this your style Lexie? What kind are YOU looking at for yourself other than just vintage/antique. Do you want a floral style as well?

(I don''t know how to add an address or picture where you can just click on it. I''m kinda computer illiterate - AND I have an imac which I don''t know how to use!)

Hey there!

I haven't checked out GoAntiques, but I'll take a look at it right now.

Aside from the antique/vintage look, I guess that I'm searching for something kind of dainty and not ridiculously ornate (but has nice details). I have short/small fingers, so definitely something that's not too huge and overwhelming. I'm leaning towards an old mine cut/antique cushion as a center stone, but I'm also loving asschers and transitional cut rounds. And uhm.. I've also been toying around with the idea of having a sapphire center stone, but who knows. I guess at some point I'll have to narrow things down

A few rings that I have saved in my "Favorites" folder are: this one from Lang Antiques, another ring from Mels Antique Jewelry.

But yeah, floral/nature motifs are pretty cool, as well as anything Edwardian/Art Nouveau, and maybe some cool filigree or engraving. I also dig a little bit of Art Deco.

Hey, how did I miss this thread? Lexie, I love your style! And I totally applaud you for considering using an unusual, unfashionable cocktail ring as your e-ring! There''s something completely enchanting about that idea. It''s like you''re taking the diamond ring tradition and whirling it into outer space. I would love to see your other jewelry--will you post pictures sometime? Just for fun, in my next response I''m going to post a picture of a pearl ring I bought a few years ago that reminds me of some of your choices.

I love the shooting star ring: I saw a similar one in a jewelry store in my area a few months ago, and I haven''t been able to get it out of my head. It was more of a Freemason type design, and quite stunningly gorgeous. I vote for the star!

Here you go. I bought it on ebay a few years ago when I was looking for a setting for a family diamond that was in a necklace I rarely wore. I ended up getting a different setting and just keeping the pearl in place. But it''s not a terrible strategy for finding a good, heavy platinum setting for cheap, since pearl rings aren''t currently fashionable and often don''t attract many bidders. You might be able to find a setting you like and replace the pearl with a stone (though it would require a skillful jeweler to alter the setting).

Here''s the side view of my ring. Sorry, I know this doesn''t help you find your engagement ring--I just got so excited seeing someone considering similar rings & wanted to join in the fun.

This is so great! We actually have very similar tastes (despite my ostentatious leanings towards OTT cocktail rings that look like pincushions!). I have quite a few pics saved on my computer at work (mostly of "the ring that got away" or ones that are too expensive) I''ll post them tomorrow for you! I remember seeing that yellow one on Lang Antiques but hadn''t seen your other sites. I''ll bookmark them for sure.

Funny, my sister is older than me (I''m 42, she''s 45) and she just got engaged last year. I am a bit "unusual" (I think it was this thread where I mentioned the tattoos, piercings etc?.) whereas SHE is much more conservative and traditional (would NEVER even think of getting a tattoo!) We would show each other what we liked and disliked and I thought I had her SO pegged (I thought she would go for antique style for sure. Dainty. Girly. Pretty.) When she showed me her ring I had to do the quickest acting job EVER. I HATED it and it was pretty much the exact OPPOSITE of what I was expecting! It''s white gold (which I LOVE but she always wears yellow gold) and is a solitaire with a VERY high.... what is it called where the prongs holding the ring up stick up REALLY high above the band? The sides come up the side of the ring towards the stone and are brushed metal. It looks like the jewelry equivalent of "modern art". I have never been so surprised. Turns out her fiance picked it out (she was with him) and she loves HIM so she loves IT. Isn''t that a nice story? She''s very lucky......

MY poor boyfriend...... he loves me despite the fact that I am certifiably insane.......

Ooh - I love this one! Saw a very similar one on Lang Antiques a while back as well - had it bookmarked but knew I probably couldn''t have a pearl as a "daily" ring......

Thanks yeah, I love that one too...... There''s a good story behind it.....

I was on vacation in Cape Cod (Massachusetts) in 2005 (I live in Vancouver, Canada). I had an argument with the friend I was staying with out there (Provincetown) so I went to meet another friend who was coming out for the weekend. My (future) boyfriend was on the ferry with her and was trying to pick her up (the cad!) She wasn''t interested in him but I was.... He came out for dinner with us..... I talked him into staying an extra day (he was en route to HIS friend''s place and was really just going to meet them in P-town before going to their place further down on the cape) We ended up crashing on the floor of someone else''s place (LONG story - too long for this post - had to do with the fight I had with my friend) While trying to get comfortable on the patio cushions we were TRYING to sleep on (he gave me his cushion - aww. There was no way we were going to be able get any sleep on that floor) we decided to go for a walk down to the beach. Stayed out there for hours and hours and hours just talking and talking (and freezing!). While we were on the beach, I saw a shooting star (he missed it). I swear to god I actually said to myself "PLEASE let this wonderful, odd little man fall in love with me". Three years, two countries, and 2,500 miles later..... here we are......

As soon as I saw that shooting star ring I thought "this is PERFECT"!

Here are a few from various shops on Ruby Lane:

Dainty flower

Spiky diamond and emerald

Deco ruby

Cabochon sapphire

Plat nice price

Plat filigree

Deliciously deco

Glitteratta do you know that I have THREE of those rings on my "Wish List" already on Ruby Lane! I guess there ARE other people out there with the same tastes as mine! (yay!) Makes me feel better..... (read my earlier post where I said I am getting tired of people saying "Um, is that supposed to be an ENGAGEMENT ring? Doesn't look like one to me") Aren't all engagement rings supposed to be:

solitaire??????
round brilliant???????
4 or 6 prong??????

Here's to being different! Hooray! (well, until everyone else starts liking the same thing too at least...... and then Neil Lane starts making repros of them...... lol)

Sorry, I got a little carried away above and posted some fairly expensive rings. Anyway, here''s another trick: Look for a vintage setting on ebay. Sometimes somebody will reset Grandma''s diamond and sell the setting for (just a little above) scrap--a good way to get a bargain. I recently bought this deco platinum setting for less than $300: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/plat-deco-setting-needs-5mm-stone.90068/

Oh, we were posting at the same time. What a lot of tastes we share! I love your story about your "odd little man"--and I even have a weakness for odd little men! (Though my husband is tall dark & handsome, totally wasted on me.) You don''t happen to like Victorian mourning jewelry too, do you? If so, check out the thread I have going in the jewelry pieces forum. Oh, and just out of curiosity, which of the rings I posted above are on your wish list?

nice ring

I don't know if this is your style, but I found this ring Art Deco Ring at www.mallaries.com. I've never shopped there. But I thought this was a neat looking ring? It looks a bit similar to the star ring you mentioned. This one is $999.

LOL. Don''t know what he''d think of me calling him that but odd he is (and little but I''m little too so it''s okay......). The Vancouverite "hippy/goth" gets together with the New Jersey Jewish writer! Who would''ve thunk it?

I have the "dainty flower" the "spiky emerald/diamond" and the "platinum nice price" on my wish list. I LOVE the platinum swirl one and yeah, it''s a good price, huh? It was taken off for a while but now it''s back on. I guess it was sold but the sale fell through....

I like your platinum setting and I agree with the majority that the smoky grey stones are the best. It just looks "right", you know? It goes so well with the look of the metal I think. I''ve never really liked reddish stones in white metal settings, think they look like they should be in yellow gold instead......

I LOVE mourning jewellery! I just can''t seem to get past the whole HAIR thing though! lol (wearing someone else''s jewellery is one thing, wearing something with a dead person''s HAIR in it kinda creeps me out a bit). There are some really pretty jet rings I''ve seen though. I also love the "urn" shaped ones. I was thinking of a "momento mori" ring for a while but they are SO expensive (and don''t think my BF would go for that for an engagement ring. He''s pretty normal). A shop in England had a few that I was watching..... I wonder if they still have pics up of the ones that sold......

or this
Love both of those Autumngems! I guess there ARE a lot of "alternative" e-rings out there. Just trying to decide. It''s so hard when you buy things vintage because for NEW rings, you know what something "should" cost ("X" size stone in "X" colour in a 14K or 18K mounting goes for ______ amount) wheras with vintage you can only really compare it to other ones you''ve seen, you know?
I guess it''s a case of something being worth what you are willing to pay for it!

I still love my shooting star as a promise ring and that paisley/leaf shape as an engagment ring. Even with the small-ish diamond (it''s only .40 carats). I assume it could be upgraded at some point in the future, right?

- Jodie -

I adore your shooting star promise ring. The leaf ring is also very pretty, but I think the price would make me hesitate, given that I''ve seen platinum rings with bigger diamonds go for less. On the other hand, if it''s the one you love, maybe you should go for it. It''s a once-in-a-lifetime decision.

Well for SOME people it is....... 2nd time for me....... lol Maybe I''ll get it right this time! (I''ve noticed nobody really "goes there" on this forum, huh? When someone says something along the lines of "I WILL be wearing it for the rest of my life" etc. I''m always kinda thinking "Weellllllll - 50% divorce rate..... it MIGHT be for the rest of your life - might not!")

Thanks for the advice about the price on the leaf/paisley ring (that''s the real reason I started this thread. Trying to get objective opinions) I THOUGHT it was rather high from looking around at other rings but thought perhaps I had just seen some REAL deals (did you see that "pin cushion" shape one I posted on the first page that had the one carat centre stone that sold for $1,800?????? I think the total diamond weight was around 2.5 carats or something crazy like that!)

I''m going to start with the star ring and see what happens (start BUGGING him I mean!!!)

- Jodie -

Yeah, I didn''t phrase that right--I didn''t mean it was necessarily your only engagement ring ever, I just meant it''s your only engagement ring with this man. Unless you upgrade, I guess. What did your first engagement ring look like (if you had one)? Anyway, I suspect this might be a good time to look for real deals in unfashionable jewelry, if you have the money for it. The economy stinks, so I imagine people are bothering to sell old stuff they think is ugly. As you''ve seen, there are better bargains out there than the ring you''ve picked. But if that''s the one you love and you have the money, maybe it doesn''t matter that there are better bargains. Nothing is really a bargain if you don''t actually want it.

First engagement ring was $200 and I PAID for it myself. Nice, huh? It was a white gold, sort of a solitaire, classic type setting (vintage looking). It had a really crappy green stone that they CALLED an emerald in it (could've been a chunk of spearmint gum for all I knew) so they changed it to an amethyst for me (not my birthstone, just liked it is all) No way we could afford a diamond.... I still have it. Not sure why I haven't gotten rid of it yet. Have you seen that website "Ex Boyfriend Jewellery"? It's pretty funny...

I would love to get that star ring and be happy with it but I'm afraid that I wouldn't be happy with something so inexpensive (saying that makes me feel REALLY guilty). I am a bit of an anti-establishment anti-consumerist type person but damned if I'd be happy with a ring that cost $200 more than my FIRST one It's really the only thing I am "princessey" about. Otherwise I am REALLY cheap myself!

I just wanted to thank you ladies for sharing your "alternative" jewelry preferences. You''ve definitely posted some crazy eye candy that we don''t usually have much exposure to on the forums. You''ve certainly made me acknowledge the beauty in vintage pieces, and I can begin to appreciate your own attraction to them.

Mausketeer, I love how your large, ornate pieces contrast the sleek, understated (and lets, face it, also large
2.gif
) erings that are typical to this site. They show the variations of taste, preference and even lifestyles that are represented on the board. Most, importantly, I love how we''re all able to band together, share our common hobby and develop a genuine interest, fondness and tolerance for others likes/dislikes.

Hope you''ll post more and share more of your stories. It adds a lot of dimension to your hunt for the perfect ring!

Thank you SO much "somehowcollide". Reading that just made my day - it really did! I joined Pricescope last year when I was considering (still am) going back to school to become a bench jeweller. At the time I was a bit put off by ALL the multiple posts showing (and discussing) what, to ME, looked like the same exact ring over and over and over again (with only slight variation relating to size, cut, and side stones versus solitaires or halo settings). Since I put this one thread up (seeking advice from experts or at least people who are familiar with diamond jewellery) I was again, kind of put off at the apparent lack of interest. Nice to see someone else appreciates originality. I have lots of photos on my work computer, I''ll try to put them up next week when I have time!

There was a thread on here a while ago with ugly rings that I found SO hilarious! I was happy to see I didn''t like any of the rings on it! Maybe this thread didn''t get a lot of interest because people think they belong in THAT post! lol. Oh well...... I love ''em all!

thanks again!
-Jodie-

Both rings are pretty. I like the sentiment of the first and the style of the second...and I think for your taste and desire for something different, either would be beautiful!

Did you end up getting the ring? I noticed it has been sold...hand shots please?
