views on this spinel please?

Wow. I have no idea and have no experience with the vendor but it looks like a piece of delicious candy in the video! :lickout:

It's not hot pink to me but we all inteprete colour differently. Still, it's very saturated and well cut. I'm not sure whether the still pictures or video is more accurate for colour.

hi everyone, thanks for your views! chrono - you don't think it's hot pink because it looks too red/purplish? am quite bad at judging colours from websites - am I seeing the wrong colours totally?

It looks a bit on the red side to me but I still really love the color! Definitely unique and beautiful

hi TL, thanks for pointing out the VVS1gem link! :twirl:

I am also having some doubts as to whether this is truly hot pink. hesitant to order just to take a look at the stone - cos of the hassle of return. I read from the website that return shipping and insurance will be borne by vendor - anyone know how this works? does it mean I don't have to pay shipping at all for the stone to be sent to me and for me to send it back if I don't like it?

Well, I can tell you the video of that stone looks very much like the video of a trillion I bought from him a while ago, and my stone is very saturated, and pinkish red.

Tuffy,
What is YOUR idea of hot pink? Any colour swatches or links?

I think it's really beautiful! I am not an expert, but it reminds me of the color in Mahenge stones, which are hot pink-red. For the more saturated stones, you will see hot pink with a slight red modifier in the smaller sizes, and more red in the larger sizes to the point of red with hot pink in the largest (5 ct+). You will have to see how neon it is in person.

When I think of straight hot pink, I think of some sapphires (like the one below), but I've never seen one with the neon quality of the Mahenge spinels. Most of the Burmese rubies I've seen are red with a pink modifier, and they glow if they have silk some silk.

It is all very subjective, and I will subjectively state that the Ebay stone looks beautiful to me :lickout:

Is this one bright ice had shipped to her and returned?

No, I don't think so. One may research her threads to find out for sure.

To my eye, that looks pretty HOT pink

But my eye is not as trained as it could be. Still, that stone looks aaaawesome :)

I would definitely want to take an IRL look at that stone if I were looking for hot pink. It looks a tad more on the red or raspberry side on my monitor but it's such a great color & so saturated, I wouldn't be able to resist. I've returned things to him with no problem; I'm sure tons of others here too.

At the end of the day it's a stunning gemstone - whether it's hot pink, raspberry, red/purple/pink etc! The still shots on the VVS1 link provided by TL are just stunning.

Do you love the colour? If you do and it's in your price range it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks!

I remember seeing it and I do not know if it is hot pink but it is very saturated on my monitor, and my monitor is un-calibrated for red. Hence, it should be good. Good luck with it!

I don't know about that, but I believe bright ice was looking for a "red" spinel.....

I love that trillion...... way over the top pricewise, for me.
Hope you get to see it and that you love it !

TL - can you post a picture of the trillion you got from Tan? would you consider it to be more pink or more red?

Those are very pretty stones from Swala! I think I see some orange in that first one, but it may be my screen. I think all the stones you posted Tuffy are very pretty.

I consider it more red. It's not pink like the above Swala gems. Here's a video still and a photo. It's 1.77 carats.

I recently obtained these side spinel trillions and these are more pink, just for comparison sake. They remind me more of the color of the Swala stones above. Hope that helps. You may prefer one color over the other.

thanks TL! the illustration is perfect. Now I have a better idea of the colour. :wink2:

The Odyssey stone looks more reddish than pinkish to me, hence I question whether you are looking specifically for hot pink. The Swala spinels appear more in the hot pink category on my monitor.

Do you folks agree that the saturation on this stone shows that it is the "old material"? while I started out looking for hot pink, I must say the stone is pretty in its own right. just ex tho.. budget stretched to the max.. sigh.

anyone has seen hot pink affordable stones you would recommend? :wavey:

Yes, I think its old material because its been on his odysseygem site forever. I think it hasn't sold because of the price, and the fact it's a trillion, but that same stone would be five times more somewhere else, at least.

There are no more affordable mahenges (especially in old material) in that size range anywhere. Most are very orange, and still extremely expensive (newer material). Tan has kept his old pricing on that stone. He should have marked it up big time, but he didn't.

I think the Swala ones are definitely more pink but I much prefer the bright rich color of the one from Tan  :lickout:

I wonder if anyone knows how much in percentages the pure pinks, pink with red, pinks with purple and pinks with orange average out to? I have three Mahenges. Two "old stock" with one being pure neon pink, the other pink with purple and orange and the last (new stock) being a pink with orange. All are beautiful but I wonder what is the breakdown in percentages of the material. Anyone know? I personally would not pick one over the other as all are gorgeous in their own rights.

I was told by a very popular Mahenge dealer you are all familiar with, that the pinkish reds and pure pinks are more valuable than the orangy pinks. From what I have seen, and I could be wrong, there are a lot more orangy pinks than pinkish reds or purer pinks. I would think the pinkish reds are even more rare than the pure pinks because normally, you need a larger stone (2+ carats) to get that more reddish hue, and those are scarcer. This was told to me by the same dealer. I guess my stone, at 1.77 carats is an anomaly, because it's pinkish red, but less than 2 carats. I have heard you can get more reddish stones in smaller sizes, but it's few and far between. I also have another pinkish red cushion that's 1.53 carats (AIGS deemed it pinkish red). As for the purple pinks, I suspect those aren't super rare either, as I've seen quite a bit. They lack the saturation of the purer pinks and pinkish reds.

I think the more pure reds and pinks are older material, as most of the newer material looks identical to what Gene put up on his most recent blog. Gene did indicate they are not mahenge quality, which I admire. Most dealers would call those mahenge quality and make a pricetag to match.
