ok here's an update!!!! I started this thread in antique/vintage forum but it was recommended I post here for better replies. any assistance/insight is greatly appreciated.
Went to the intimidating NYC Diamond District. After striking numerous times with rude people I found a shop called Ben Moses. They were very friendly and sincere and did not care that I wasn't buying yet. Schooled me nicely without talking down to me.
Here's the scoop....Repro platinum Victorian/Art Deco with some filigree, scroll work, milgrain, 6 prong design. center stone of .81 Old European F/VS. Semi-custom job: scroll work sort of reminiscent of my girl's tats, milgrain work will pop! Ring looks durable yet feminine. Very nice! ALMOST just what I was looking for. Price of $4,100 perhaps nego. hoping for $3,900. The ring is hand tooled.
Now, going online I see similar stuff but smaller center stones with less color and clarity specs. going for comparable prices if not more! I also felt very at ease at the shop and they asked all the right personal questions of what we were into, backgrounds, etc. I did not feel rushed whatsoever. Their selection was awesome and the work to the naked eye looked quality.
downside was diamond was certified by EGL U.S. lab. which this site tells me is not reliable. I COULD get the ring appraised afterward at a family jeweler that my dad went to decades ago.
thoughts? suggestions? I feel more educated now.
