Now - the issue. I only found this site online this past Thursday. For the past 2 days I''ve done nothing but read every post on here regarding blue fluorescence and its impact on diamonds (especially J color). I got panicky because I kept reading that this sometimes shows up lilac (purplish) which is Audra''s LEAST liked color. I asked Blue Nile to question the vendor on what the fluorescence is doing to this particular diamond.

Their report back stated, "fluorescence creates SLIGHT bluish tint but the diamond faces up white; not milky/oily at all; NOT yellow either."

Either way, I still think this might be a great value - so I went ahead and bought it last night with a platinum setting. It should be here Thursday. But until then I''m going to freak out that I may have messed up (even though BN has a 30-day return policy). I wanted the fluorescence to give it a little extra kick and sparkle in the sunlight, but not turn completely blue in the sun like I''ve seen in some pictures on here.

Since the lab report came back "SLIGHT bluish tint" - does that mean even though it has "VERY strong blue fluorescence" it still is only showing slightly? Does that make sense?

Yes, "very strong" is a relative term and even then it is not like the stone looks purple

In bright direct sublght the stone will shine with a whitish-blue color, many people love this effect and think it looks cool! In normal lighting that does not have UV it will look like any other J color stone. It is UV that activates the flor, so you will not see it all the time.

Take a deep breat and sit back and relax until it arrives! I suspect you will like it.

What are the Pavilion and crown angles from the cert? Is this is BN signature diamond? What lab issued the cert?

My diamond has strong blue fluorescence that I really like. It takes on a violet color when in the bright sunlight and occasionally indoors if the lighting contains UV -- completely clear otherwise. If your GF doesn''t like violet...she might not like the diamond when she goes outside. I''d just make sure the vendor has a good return policy and see it for yourself.

Just sit tight until you can see it.

Good advice.

I have a diamond with strong blue fluoresence; it is blue only in direct sunlight. Not purple. Not lavender. It is not blue indoors and it is not blue on an overcast day.

Blue fluoresence is fleeting and hard to capture visually, because the minute the diamond is moved or tipped away from the direct light source, the blue is gone. And it is hard for me to tell how much of the blue in my diamond is due to the reflection of the blue sky! Also, a well-cut diamond is blinding in the sun, and flashes all sorts of other colors, so that makes it very difficult to capture the blue fluoresence with my eyes. With a camera, of course, it can be seen.

Thanks for all the quick replies!

The cert. is from GIA - anything else you asked I have no clue (still a noob). However, the cut is Ideal (XXX) but not Blue Nile''s "Signature" Ideal. Either way, I am expecting it to sparkle significantly.

I think I just need to chill out and wait for the thing to arrive then test it out on a really sunny day. I''m proposing this June in Cape Cod on the beach - so the sun will definitely be a factor in her first impression.

My two I''s have strong blue flor. I love it. Never noticed much of a purple tint. Just blue.

Hi- I was recently going through the same fears about fluorescence. The amazing folks at GOG put this video together for a diamond that I am purchasing after I called with second thoughts... it will help you see the effects of fluorescence up close and personal in many angles. It helped me a lot with my decision. Check it out. http://www.vimeo.com/10790646 Good Luck!

When you get the ring take it outside and see how you like it. I personally don''t think you have anything to worry about. BN has a great return policy just in case. My engagement ring has a strong blue flor and I don''t mind it at all. I don''t even really notice it. I was worried at first but the blue wasn''t that dark. It just gets a slight bluish tint when outside or in direct sunlight. Good luck and tell us what you decide!

Hi...just wondering if you received the ring with the very strong blue fluoro, and do you like it?
