Hi Everyone!
I''ve been lurking here for a few weeks now, but this is officially my first post!

I have a question regarding the polish and symmetry of a diamond.

Are diamonds with "Very Good" polish and symmetry necessarily bad? Can someone explain how this could effect the performance of a diamond.

Thanks in advance!

Depth, table, crown, and pavillion specs are more important than polish and symmetry. Given a diamond with the depth/table, crown, and pavillion where they should be, VG/VG polish and symmetry are probably fine. VG polish is definitely fine, and usually VG symmetry is fine. This is where images come in handy.

I dont have any images of the diamond and the GIA report didn''t include crown and pavillion angles. If I contact GIA, will I be able to get this info from them?

Anyway, here''s what I do have...
Measurements 7.47 - 7.56 X 4.50MM
Weight 1.53CARATS
Depth 59.9%
Table 57%

Older certs don''t usually have crown/pavillion numbers. Can you contact the vendor and get an ideal scope image and a SARIN?

It is said that good and above with polish and symmetry with some exceptions look the same to the untrained eye. Ideal is usually preferred by those purchasers of Superideal diamonds as part of their package, a diamond cut to this calibre will usually have ex ex or ID ID as part of the detailing and finish of the cut.

Here is an explanation of Symmetry and one for Polish

The diamond was certified back in 1999 and I don''t have any images (SARIN or IS).

Do you think GIA will have the crown and pavillion angles on file?

Is this a diamond you already own, or are you purchasing it from a vendor? If you are purchasing it from a vendor, then ask them to run a SARIN for you.

I own this diamond.

polish and symmetry are minor finish details and will not make an otherwise good diamond bad or vice versa.
don''t worry about it and enjoy your diamond!

Ditto. Since you already own it, just enjoy it.

I contacted GIA and they were able to give me the info I was looking for...

Depth 59.9%
Table 57%
Crown Angle 35 degrees
Paviliion 42.5%

It scores a .6 on the HCA.

Great pick. As stated before, polish & symmetry doesn''t count a whole lot to untrained eyes unless it is badly off (Fair grading). Enjoy your diamond!

I wouldn''t worry about the polish and symmetry given the specs of the stone. It''s an already nice stone and polish/symmetry won''t take that away. You start to see "visible" differences at the good level.

Thanks everyone!!
