very good cut larger stone vs excellent smaller?

Please don''t flame me. I know cut is more important on this board but still have to ask. Comparing a stone from Whiteflash: excellent cut, GIA certified, K color VS2, .7ct

versus .79 ct, I color, SI2, very good cut. Not certified but from a reputable jeweler and I would get appraisal.

Size difference makes #2 tempting. Is there very much difference between excellent and very good cut?

I think, to me, it would maybe depend on why the stone with VG got that grade. There are some that would be just as pretty as Ideal/EX cut. And then, there are some that wouldn''t, just depends. Do you have any info on the larger stone?

And is this for a ring or pendant?

Stones are for earrings. I have copy of GIA cert on Whiteflash stone (the are looking at another one to try to match it). The one from the jeweler, I saw (pair of tcw 1.5 and from what I understand the determination of very good was done via measurements. He is GIA educated and was recommended by someone on this board. Will you get a chance to look at the diamond in person? Have you had a chance to look at ideal-cut stones so you are familiar with how they *look* and *perform* so you can make a comparison? And don''t forget to observe the stone in various lighting environments... those jewelry store lights can make a river rock sparkle!

I did see the stone from the jeweler. He procured 5 sets for me to look at. I guess I'm not that discerning because they all looked nice and sparkly to me. He showed me colors from I to K and I didn't really see a difference. Biggest difference I noticed was between the ones set in 3-prong vs 4-prong (I prefer 3)...and the one pair (the 1.58 c) was larger than the others. I asked him out of all of the 5 which were best cut. He picked the largest ones and one other pair.

The Whiteflash ones I won't see unless I buy them.

Lynn your post about your K color sparklers was a factor in my shopping. I started out looking at 1ctw and then tried on a pair of 80 pts each ear and decided I had to go bigger. Most local jewelers say color is most important but your post said different and that caught my interest. This pair at the jeweler is bigger but after reading all the raves on here about the Whiteflash diamonds..................I'm confused!. Any help will be appreciated.
Maybe for someone with a not so discerning eye, I should just go bigger?

As far as Ideal cut, I did go to Tiffany and tried on their earrings...I didn't see them side-by-side with others but from what I could tell they weren't that dramatically different.

My suggestion would be to go with the better cut that is a little bit smaller in order to obtain optimal beauty ... Just a thought.

There is not a huge difference, you''re right. I guess I like the idea that the .79 is close to the .80 I tried on that started this whole thing. Wish I could see the Whiteflash ones next to the local ones.

I know exactly what you mean, SDS. I was doing something similar when looking for my center stone. I found a 1.28 c stone that I loved but I kept looking at ones around 1.35 b/c they were closer to 1.5c ... I finally decided to go with the 1.28 diamond I love and forget about the constant pursuit of larger ... I will save that for 25 yrs down the road if/when I upgrade.

If I recall correctly, you really like the Whiteflash diamond, right? If it is well cut, why not just stick with that one? I just bought a .526 c diamond from them - D/VS2 and I was nervous about buying sight unseen but it is gorgeous!! If you are concerned that you will be disappointed, I would put that fear aside and, worst come to worst, if you are not happy, I am confident Whiteflash will do whatever it takes to satisfy you.

Well I really don''t know if I like the Whiteflash one. I haven''t seen it. It does seem like they try to make sure they sell you something nice though. She emailed me about two stones initially then they eliminated one as they decided it wasn''t nice enough. So she''s looking at another one. And the local jeweler is also looking at info on another set for me (certed). Thanks for your advice.

First, If it''s not certfied, just be aware that the stats (i.e. color and clarity) may be off by 2 or 3 grades.
Second, make sure that the .79 ones are facing up bigger than the .7 ones. (weight doesn''t really say much). If it does then
If you are happy with them, I''d just get them. You''ve seen diamonds at Tiffanys etc. so you know what good quality diamonds look like. I''d only go for certified diamonds online instead of something you actually saw because:

1. Usually there''s a big cost discount to shopping online (not the case here)
2. You don''t have the time to shop around at all the diamond stores, get extremely educated etc. but don''t want to get the wool pooled over your eyes by some sleezy dealer (not the case here)
3. You''re buying the diamonds as a gift, and therefore you don''t trust your own eyes: what if she/he can see all the imperfections that I can''t! (not the case here)

So go for it. Especially with earings, they are not as closley scrutinized as a diamond going on a ring, so with earings bigger is often better .
