hello. i am new to this site. i have been reading reviews made on NY diamond district as myself and my "significant other" are planning to come to NY in a few months time to buy my engagement ring. from what i''ve read it seems that ny diamond district is not recommended.... we had planned to get the diamond there as it had been recommended in irish websites.

can anyone please advise if there are any reputable vendors in the diamond district. we will be coming from ireland and thought we would get a much better deal in ny due to the exchange rate and the fact that irish jewellers are over priced.
if you cannot recommend the diamond district can someone please advise jewellers where we will get good value for our money, we plan to spend in range of $10,000 , we only have a few days and we dont know ny at all so any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks!

MarK T at engagementringsdirect.com is awesome. Don''t only judge the stones listed on his site. You can call him and tell him what you want and he''ll have several for you to look at when you get there. Amazing prices too.

i second mark t! he is the man!

Lucy,

Sounds like you''ve got a reasonably good plan; also, that you''ve been given good recommendations for vendors to get with (and one more diamond you might want to consider, among many, is this one from GOG, a 1.14 G VS2). A fourth vendor I''d possibly add, just to be comprehensive, is Excel Diamonds, featuring SuperbCert; not everyone likes them, but they''re known to have good quality wares.

In contrast, everybody (as you can read here) likes Mark Turnowski. Do read the tutorial here under Knowledge up top, where it reviews how the relationship between crown & pavilion angles are the critical factors frequently associated with the good cut of a diamond. Mark uniquely doesn''t publish these, but everybody likes him anyway; not sure if he has equipment to measure this in his store or not.

A last point...it''s frequently recommended to try to make appointments with these guys, in advance of your visit. If this will work for you, it seems like a good idea.

Best,

Hi Lucy - I think it''s a case of picking your way carefully.

You''ve already been given some great ideas. I would also add David at Diamondsbylauren.com. I haven''t bought from him but I exchanged mails when I thought I would be coming over to NY and I''ve seen his posts for years. They always seem full of good sense. People speak very highly of him. I''d love to check him out in person. He has a good coloured stone inventory so that might be partic. interesting.

Have a wonderful time. You''d be safe in the hands of any of the above mentioned. They all seem very respected, over a long period of time.

Abi
