verifying diamond - GIA report

the jeweler that i am considering to buy from has
a 30 - 60 day verification policy (and 100 % full refund)
he suggested that if we would like to check if the stone
matches the gia report we could go to
either GIA or International Gemological Institute (IGI) and
pay a fee..

do you think this step is necessary ? or should we just go to an appraiser ?

How big (expensive) is the diamond?

We haven't picked out the stone yet but the budget is under 5K.
We wanted to pick a jeweler with a 100% refund policy before we purchase.
He has great stones and we liked the store's customer-oriented attitude.
We feel comfortable working with them/. WHen we started out we happened to go to
them first, they were very patient and they gave us an education. We went to look at other stores and met a lot
of dealers but we are going to stay with this jewelers.

With GIA report your diamond will be easier to sell (hope it will never need it). Otherwise, for verification and insurance purposes independent appraiser should be just fine, faster and cheaper ($150-$200 depending on the size + shipping).

But this is only my personal opinion - do what will make you feel more comfortable.

i dont understand the shipping part...
\aren't appraisers supposed to check it out in front of you ?

also, are they supposed to check the stone without the setting ?
