I think it''s good you let him add hte people to the guest list. Even if they are people you don''t necessarily want there, they are probably people who would have been invited if FFIL hadn''t messed up and had his head in the sand in the first place, so it''s a nice gesture that you let him save face and invite those he wanted to.
As for the rehearsal dinner, I would plan on paying for it other ways, and if FFIL brings it up himself, play it by ear. If he makes a half-hearted gesture, be prepared to say, thanks, but it''s already been taken care of. But if he brings it up himself and seems really genuine, you can allow him to pay for it.
