Baby’s first zircon. Kind of love it. Seems to sparkle more in lower light.

I purchased 4 sapphires to review, and unfortunately none of them are right for me so I sent them all back, but I took a ton of photos in a bunch of lighting conditions & hope that this is helpful to other people - the pics everyone else has posted here were very helpful for me for online shopping :) I'll do one post for each sapphire with the same order of pics in each so it doesn't get confusing.

Sapphire number 1 - vendor pic:
sapphire-blue-11-1298.jpg

And my pics. Left side is starting with their recommended viewing (midday, northern facing window, turn your back to the window and hold gem in case up to the light) and the right side is the same stance, but in the afternoon with an east-facing window:

1-1.png

Full sun:

1-2.png

Left - Overcast morning, facing east (lighting is direct, not through glass window) and right is overcast afternoon facing west (through window)

1-3.png

And then testing a bunch of artificial lighting!
Left – my bathroom light, which is a relatively warm white LED. Center – Incandescent lamp. Right - Home office LED (not a very good light, some reddish tone to it):

1-4.png

With flash in a dark room:

1-5.JPG

Finally my kitchen/living room lighting, which can be a bit harsh for color but good for sparkle, so I have a video in that light (sorry for the vertical!)

Super informative @MainSequence
Thank you!
What did you learn from viewing these about what it is you are looking for in “the one”?

It was really helpful seeing the stones in person and being able to see how they shift in different lighting sources. It also helped me determine that I do want some sleepiness/silk because I like the consistency of how a stone with that holds color across different lighting better than crystal-clear stones. That said, I really loved the sparkle of #4 and am adding something like it to my "someday" list :D
I also had a positive experience with the vendor (Gemfix) - Laura was very friendly & communicative and no-pressure about everything

Continuing my foray into the new and exciting world of colored stones, through the dubious medium of gemrockauctions bargain hunting...

In-person, low-experience, thoughts:
- IRL the emerald seems lovely. Its color pops like a jolly rancher and glows greenly indoors.
- I love this silly pezzottaite. It is a flawed little creature, but I love its raspberry cotton candy silliness. It has personality
- Tormaline is quirky, and definitely flawed. I was not able to see the surface crack in the listing video, & it has its windowness (which all makes its lower price make more sense to me). I dig the color though, and it sometimes surprises me with how it glows in low light. Might just keep it for the collection, and not do anything with it.

Hi Everyone-
I hoped I chose the right thread to ask this. If not, please let me know. Anyhow...I received the following email from AsianGemNy. Any thoughts as to whether this is a good idea or a bad one? I'd hate to try and return the gems to the Gem Dealer and have a problem. Does the following email seem legitimate to you? I have subscribed to their emails but have yet to actually purchase from them. Is this a fairly normal thing?
Thanks!

Hi,

Hope all is well.

I wanted to know if I can send you a few carat sample of the sizes you use in Ruby and Blue Sapphire. I will include a return shipping label along with the package, so you really have nothing to lose.

Just tell me the sizes, color shade and price per carat that you normally buy, and let me send you a hassle free sample of just 5-10 carats for you to look at and compare with whatever you are currently buying. I am sure I will beat anyone else quality for the price. My merchandise will do the talking.

I only need size, color, and price per carat from you, and I will send you the merchandise to look at and compare with anyone else in the market.

We have merchandise in Round, Ovals, Squares/Cushions and Pear Shape. Single stones, melee and calibrated. All of our merchandise comes straight from cutting factories in Bangkok.

Browse inventory at www.asiangemny.com

We carry all quality, color, and price ranges in Ruby and Blue Sapphire:

Melee (1mm-4mm diamond cut and step cut)
Rounds up to 10mm (diamond cut and step cut)
Larger calibrated (4x3,5x3,5x4,6x4,6x5,7x5,8x6,9x7,10x8,12x10) – All shapes
Single stones from commercial to fine quality (from 2cts-20cts) – All shapes

The zircon from mastercut gems is very sparkly and saturated in real life. Sapphires are definitely less saturated in real life

Here’s some of mine. My phone ams up the color in some of the pics.
It desaturates in bright light, my camera then doesn’t pick up any orange and depicts it as clear. I can’t get an accurate photo to show how it looks when it’s desaturated.
This is closest, but still not really.

Gemfix’s photos are more accurate than mine, on my monitor.
My phone negates the orange tone.
Some lighting it’s less peachy than others, but it’s never a really cool tone pink.
Slightly silky. Beautiful cut.

Now to pro vs cons.

Paler in my office than the studio daylight that multicolour uses. I'm also not seeing blue with my eyes but think my camera's picking up more blue than I see.

The mint garnet was very beautiful in low light. It's more saturated than what I'd call mint, but I guess if you flood it with light it does look minty.

Overall, very happy with my purchase with Dan Stair.
