Hello all
I have been lurking on this site for the last couple of months and decided it was about time I contributed a little something myself.

I am in the process of having my lovely 0.83 ct, IF, F color, EX/EX diamond re-mounted into a new setting. My lovely husband and I have been married for just over a year. We purchased the diamond from ''Bluenile''and had the setting custom made at that time. From day one I just did not like my super plain, V-prong plat. setting. That is another story I will spare you all from.
I have been searching for the perfect setting for about 3months now. To be honest I was ready to order the legato ''sleek line'' from WF but my husband expressed some concern over having to send my diamond to them. I must admit I would have been really worried in case it got lost in transit. WF would not sell us the setting without the diamond mounted. So this coupled with the fact that I am very particular, wanting the perfect setting and my husband thought I was mad to order something this expensive without having seen it first!!!). So after absolutely ages of hunting I FINALLY decided on a Vatche setting called The Caroline - with no pave on the shoulders.

I live in Washington DC and my nearest Vatche vendor in Charleston Alexander in Bethesda, MD. They ordered a demo model for me to look at and it arrived within 2 days. Unfortunately they could only send the version with pave on the shoulders of the setting but it gave me a good idea of the style of the setting and how it would fit with my memoire, dual prong half eternity wedding band. It fit perfectly!!! It is a lovely setting and I will post some pictures for you all to see once I have it on my little finger. I gave Charleston Alexander my current setting yesterday and they are going to unmount my diamond and send it to Vatche today. It should be ready Thursday/Friday next week said Vatche as they have the setting ready to go - so exciting!!!
Vatche have been great I have to admit. When i saw the demo ring two things bothered me
1. The diamond was set a bit too low for me. I want to be able to see the culet clearly and for there so be a tiny space underneath visible.
2. The prong tips on the demo where claw-like, I prefer more rounded tips on the prongs

I emailed Vatche and a gentleman called Chris promtly emailed me back. I told him of my concerns and he said they could mount the diamond a little higher for me and round of the prong tips no problem.
- making me a happy little chappie!!

To date I only have 2 gripes:
1. In addition to the demo setting being the pave type Caroline and not the plain one, the demo model I was told by the lady at C. Alexanders was silver (am I the only one who thinks this strange?). This meant I was not able to get the feel of the platinum setting or see the polish finish - I was definitely disappointed but took the plunge anyway and ''went for it''.
2. Regarding the warrenty from Vatche. Vatche do a life time warrently on their setting but having read through that warrently it states clearly if you have a vendor set your stone - and not Vatche themselves - the warrently is void. I directly asked Chris at Vatche about this, asking if I have C. Alexanders set my diamond will this void the warrenty - here is his reply

"Dear Claire
I have attached our lifetime warranty as you requested, also please note that Vatche feels very strongly about his reputation and his workmanship and always believes that the customer should always be happy and remain happy when purchasing the Vatche brand so rest assured that we will honor the warranty regardless.
Best regards,
Chris

This is all well and good but I wonder what would happen in the future if I needed Vatche to fix something about my setting. I think it best to just get Vatche to set and resize your setting and save any heartache down the line.
So anyway this entry is getting way to long so time to wrap things up........
I searched Pricescope for the Vatche Caroline setting but no-one seems to have it. If anybody out there does have it can you post some pictures if it for me.....if for no other reason to keep me going with some eye candy until end of next week!!

Thank all and thank Pricescope for a great forum

I don''t have it, but thought about it! I really love that setting. I have to say though that usually with designer settings the norm is to send it back to the designer to set. Is there any reason you are uncomfortable doing this? I think it''s the best course of action personally...

Why would the designer need to set the diamond? Why would a reputable jeweler not be able to do that?

They are able for sure, but the designer setting it usually #1 ensures the warranty is in place, and #2 they have done that particular setting so many times that they know how to execute it perfectly. And #3 if they mess it up there is no blame between whether the setting was faulty or the setter was faulty, they just fix/replace it and move on.

If you have a jeweler you love, have used before, and trust completely by all means go for it. But there are a lot of bad benchmen out there and they usually don''t work for the big design houses.

I love that setting! It''s so pretty - I''m sure diamond will look goreous in it!

Very nice setting...love the band

Have vatche set it if that is an option

I agree with you guys, it is better to get Vatche to do the setting that way if anythings goes wrong then I will be covered under their warranty - no problems
I asked Chris at Vatche how long it generally takes to re-set a diamond (just in case I decide to upgrade in the future ha ha ha) and he said 2-3 days from receiving the diamond, so that is a fast turn around!

My only other little concern is the pave around the basket.... it is very pretty and delicate looking and Chris assured me that Vatche settings are made to last a lifetime and beyond. I am moving to the UK in about a year so if anything needs to be fixed or I need a re-sizing then I will need to look into vendors in the UK who can help me get it to Vatche in NY. A little bit of a pain but worth it to maintain the warranty.

Does anyone here have pave on their rings - how do you feel about it, are you more careful with it compared to if there was no pave? I wear my engagement ring EVERY DAY! and only take it of to do the dishes? Will I need to be more careful?

very nice setting and band!

Hi! I love the Caroline! I, too am in the process of a re-set and am looking into the sleek lines legato, etc. I recently found the "Caroline" and fell in love! I am also a but picky, though, and have had trouble with prongs in the past. I need them to be perfectly aligned and in sync. I have a question for you -- was the Caroline setting significantly more expensive than the sleek lines legato? I would love to know about how much it costs to buy in a B&M store. And how do you get ahold of someone at Vatche to make such a purchase? Oh and lastly, post lots of pics when you get it!! I am so happy to have found your post!

ee found your post!

You need to buy the setting from a Vatche dealer. Winfield''s Jewelers (Wink Jone''s store) is wonderful to deal with and they have great prices on Vatche settings. I would call them.

Hi medigirl
My husband is picking it up my new ''vatche Caroline'' setting later today so I will aim to post lots of pics over the weekend. Sooo exciting!!!
I am also completely and utterly nuts about the setting being perfect! The prongs must align perfectly and be totally symmetrical, the tips of the prongs need to be perfect etc. etc.

Vatche have been great with me. When I saw the demo of the setting at the Vatche vendor Charleston Alexander - the tips of the prongs looked really claw-like and I did not like them at all. I contacted Chris at Vatche and sent him a couple of photos of more rounded prongs and he said no problem, he would make sure the stone-setter (who by the way has been working with Vatche for 15 years)would round off the prong tips. I also asked that they mount the diamond a little higher so that there would be a small space beneath the culet - again no problem.
It actually turned out that when my setting came last week - the stone was set too high it did not look right to my eyes, so back it went to C. Alexanders who sent it back to Vatche who have now set the diamond lower so that it will sit perfectly in the basket (I am sure if I had not mentioned about setting the stone a bit higher in the first place it would have been perfect first time round!). Anyway apart from this the setting was lovely and the prong tips where absolutely just right.
The details round the basket with the diamond bead-set pave was so intricate and pretty and really adds that little bit extra to the setting.

I to was thinking about the legato sleek-line from Whiteflash, but I came to the conclusion that I am way to picky to order something on-line without ever seeing it! I also felt nervous FEDEXing my diamond to them (I know lots of people have done this but hey this is just how I feel). Also if I did not like the legato sleek-line I would have to pay to send it back to WF to have my stone un-mounted - way to much hassle and money. I decided to go with the Vatche Caroline'' and am so glad I did. The workmanship is lovely, the setting is perfectly finished and it is so delicate looking - cannot wait to put it on my little finger tonight.
Yes the Vatche caroline is much more expensive - I paid $2100 compared with the legato from WF - which is around $1275 in plat. tHE EXTRA $$$ was worth it for the quality of the workmanship and peace of mind (my Vatche has a lifetime guarantee - if there is any problems I can give it to C. Alexanders or any other Vatche vendor and they will send it to Vatche in NY to be worked on at no cost to me. Also my experience with Vatche is very fast turn around, taking only 2-3 days to mount my center stone.

Okay I think this post is long enough now
better go - keep posted for photos

Ooh, it is beautiful and I cannot wait to see your pictures!
I love the name of this ring...my 4 year old daughter is named Caroline

Magpie,

Oh my goodness - sending stuff back and trying to make it absolutely perfect sounds exactly like me! How does your DH handle it? I tend to drive mine nuts with my jewelry issues!! Poor guy...
I can''t waaaaait to see your pics! Especially since your stone is about the same size as mine! I bet it''s gorgeous!

AHHHHHH
So I went to the jewellers to pick up my new Vatche and the height of the stone was perfect, the prong tips were rounded nicely, the culet was centred exactly, but I noticed within 1 min that the prongs were NOT symmetrical. On one side the prongs were more curved and on the other side they were staighter. I showed my husband and he noticed it also. I could not even put it on my finger it bugged me soo much. Unfortunely the nice lady at C.Alexanders (who has been fab by the way thus far) did not admit that she noticed it at all and actually said "well you see the centre stone mounting is all done by hand so it is not going to be exact''. I could not believe she said that!!! For over $2k this ring better be PERFECT!!! Especially when it is coming from a designer company who is supposed to pride themselves on excellent craftsmanship.

Then to top that off she said that she hoped it comes back perfect this time since we would have to pay for shipping if it needs to go back AGAIN......

All my husband could say (to me) was that there would not be a next time, we will be requiring a complete refund if is is not just right.

What if it comes back again and it is not perfect?
8.gif

what a hassle this has been so far.........keep your fingers crossed the setting comes back just right otherwise I have no idea what we are going to do at this point.
p.s. Yes my poor husband is being driven nuts by this whole process but at least he agrees the setting should be perfect and I should not accept anything less.
26.gif

Oh my goodness, I am s sorry Magpie! I have actually had someone tell me that exact same thing about "it''s set by hand.. can''t be perfect.. yadda yadda yadda..." I thought it was a bunch of baloney! :) I know EXACTLY how you feel because it sounds like my story to a T! My hubby is actually worried that even after we choose a new setting and have it done, I still wouldn''t be happy with it and honestly that scares me too! But for the money you pay for such a high quality setting, it should be perfect, IMHO. Did you take any pics by any chance? I''m keeping my fingers crossed that it looks perfect for you, and you give me hope that i am not the only super perfectionist out there when it comes to these things!!

Hi Medigirl
So sorry but I did try to take some pictures but my camera is terrible....they were all fuzzy. I will try again when it comes back and if they still look terrible I will borrow a friends camera.

Glad you found this thread though, I was starting to think that I was the only ''crazy'' perfectionist out there. To be honest though I do not even consider myself to overly picky - to me it was obvious the prongs were not symmetrical and I could not believe Vatche sent it out like that!
Anyway fingers crossed it comes back PERFECT this time because if it does not I will be super disappointed and my poor husband will be drinking alot more whiskey than normal ha ha ha

p.s. Medigirl where are you located if you do not mind me asking.....I am in Washington DC!
35.gif
so ''hello'' from DC!

p.s. I love pricescope.... it is such a stress reliever

Haha I hear ya on the husband front! LOL.. I am in the process of negotiating with mine a few times a week.. it''s a sensitive topic (the re-set) but we are getting there.
I bet Vatche will make it all better for you.. they are professionals and make beautiful pieces! I would definitely want it to be perfect! Stand your ground with the jeweler and don''t take it home until it''s exactly what you want! (I''ve had that problem before.. and two weeks later the nagging feeling is out of control!)

Can''t wait to see your beautiful ring!

And greetings to you from chilly Chicago!

Hey medigirl
I noticed your thread regarding the asymmetry of your setting''s prongs (I tried to reply on that thread but the reply icon was not there for whatever reason
40.gif
anyway I definitely noticed that the top two prongs are slightly closer together than the bottom two prongs. When you look at your ring every day I understand how this can begin to bug you. Having said this it is very subtle and if everything else is perfect - I mean TOTALLY PERFECT then I would let it go.....the jeweller might end up creating another problem with the setting.
I totally agree with arjunajane - perhaps you can work something out with the jeweller and get a partial refund - after all they have had there fair number of attempts at fixing it and have been unable to come to your expected standard. Keep us posted on how it goes......

Okay so the update (with photos of my lovely setting) is that Vatche corrected the prongs ''as best they could'', I can still see a slight asymmetry from a side angle but I think at this point I am happy that everything else is totally perfect and you cannot see it unless you look specifically for it. Of course Vatche reminded me that the centre stone setting is done by hand and not machine - bla bla bla - I know many of you guys have faced the same issue.....anyway really happy with my new setting, it is really lovely and the pave basket really makes it pop!!

anyone know how I can remove/replace them with smaller photos???

What a gorgeous swoopy setting - I love it! As for the pictures, I think your best bet would be to e-mail one of the mods for the shots that have already been posted ....

hopefully this is smaller!!

Ooooh I love it magpie!!

It looks so delicate and beutiful, and the prongs are very dainty and barely there from the top! I love the "prongs were set by hand" bit.. hehehe.. buu it truly does look perfect, even to a perfectionist like me!!
Do your bands fit flush? It looks like they would...
As for me, I am still in limbo.. I am still unhappy with my setting and DH and I are going to look into it, but after the holidays when our financial year winds down!

So happy for you!! Enjoy it!
