Mara, I hope you don't mind if I put my oar in, but that stone looks very deep. Does Greg want a substantial ring?

Mara,

I recently (last week) saw the green tourm on the Gem Shopping Network that you were posting about a few weeks back. (Sorry ... I don't recall the details of your thread regarding its viability for your hubby's ring.)

In the event you were still thinking about it, it appears the GSN still has it available. My memory fails to serve me from time to time, but I did note that the price had not changed from when it was shown afer the holidays ... but I can't for the life of me remember what it was !

Hmm good point Win, I am not too sure what I should be looking for in terms of depth but to be honest, this whole ring is what I would call 'substantial'...hehee. So I don't know if the depth would be a bad thing here? Should I be looking for something more shallow? This colored stuff is very confusing!

Blue eyes...I think the original was $2600 and it was HUGE, 11 carats! I think that was way too big for what I wanted...and I am hoping I can build it for much less than that! If I can ever find the tourmaline that is!

Alert! GCN has great 4 ct or so green tourm on the air right now !

For the life of me since we moved, I CANNOT find the GSN. What channel is it for you? We have DirecTV satellite which we had when we moved before, so it's not like anything has changed. ARGH. I bet that tourm is marked up eh? Seems like it would be.

Yay! I like the step cut and THIS one. The one you say you like the color could be nice - all of these are. Seriously, you would need a handful of gems to match the shipping. Why not have fun ! and see what tourmaline looks like in different shades and cuts. Just don't get tooo addicted.

I would buy from this shop. But I also wear a pebble set in a serious pure gold ring (real pebble, I picked it up from the seashore myself! - yellowish, opaque, polycrystaline quartz like those used to pave and decorate gardens).

Again, I don't think the e-bay shop is a fraud, but the pictures look on the 'optimistic' side. Honestly, given the price why not get all three pieces and see what the real thing looks like compared to the pics?

I would never say those earth-toned tourmalines are not beautiful. 'cause I love them all

On my DirecTV it's channel 228 .. but it does not come on the air here in Chicago until 7 pm Central Time. I might start a thread reagrding GSN to see if any PS folks have taken the leap and purchased anything from them.

I called to ask about their return policy (10 days starting from the minute you sign for the package) but have not bought anything. Some of the hosts are too hard on the ears !! The hooting and hollering and carnival-like heckling turns me off. Steve, I think is his name, is a smarty pants who knows his stuff !
Even my kids cover their ears when the older fellow Frank yelps "HHOOLLLYYY TTOOLLEEDDOOO !!!"

I like the step cut too...Val...it's only $1 right now. Hehee.

Any of the other links look good to you? The other one you liked, I really like it as well but it doesn't look 100% eye clean? Maybe it's just the MASSIVE size of the pix, what do you think? Any of the others catch your fancy?

I was not kidding... get a bunch. I would think all those are eye clean, from the pictures. I would need about 1milimeter of an inclusion to see it (and more to actually mind it being there), and those pics are very much enlarged, so a 1mm speck would be a tenth of the stone's legth or such - a real splotch.

I am really curious to know why on earth would one bother to sell anything at such prices on Ebay. Even more surprisingly, at leat some of these SE Asian shops seem to enlist, sell a few hundred items for next to nothing and then give up. Why bother cut rock for this!!! This really looks like Internet Marketing gone bust

Ana, could you post a picture of your pebble ring? That sounds very intriguing! Is there a story behind it?

(Sorry to hijack the thread, Mara. I love that green--Greg's ring is going to kick a$$!)

Not the worst scissor cut tourmaline...

As for the pebble... well, the idea somehow came from a series of jewelry with rough stones (precious or not) displayed at the RI school of design. There were some piece posted on The Guild and Velvet da Vinci.

Pretty val..where did you find that tourm?

Wow I like this one too!!

http://www.customgemstones.com/TOURMALINE/to422.htm

but it may be slightly small.

Speaking on settings, I emailed Tradeshop and have not yet heard back. I want that setting in the previous tourm post I did....but made on the CHEAP. It's 14k yellow gold and doesn't look SO substantial, I wonder where I could get someone to make it for me for cheap?

it's one of those funky collector's stones. ok for a pendant but not a ring (not tough enough)

Mara,

Don't know how much you want to spend but Faceters.com has some nice tourms from time to time. Sample for you:

Congrats on the win, can't wait to see the outcome!

Okay so the tourm arrived and its beautiful!! A tad dark for a setting I think...and actually a little too small for my project but it does help to give me a perspective on what else I need to look for. I think I need a similarly proportioned but larger stone and something a little lighter in green so that when it is set it will not look too dark. However, this tourm is lovely! Have to figure out what to do with it.

A+ on the eBay purchase!

Hey Mara -- have you thought of maybe using tsavorite garnet instead of green tourmaline? Just a thought.

Experts, please chime in and correct me if I'm wrong, but the tsavorites I have seen have more of that green grass look and don't have the olive color/darker color modifier to it. So, I'm assuming that the lack of olive/darkness modifier is inherent to tsavorites itself.

Cool project you're undertaking, though. I wish my guy is less picky. He wants a star *green* stone! Now, where would I find a star emerald?????
