Hello,

I spot a princess cut diamond online. Can anyone tell me if it is a great diamond and a great deal?

Princess cut
price: around$7,300
VVS1
E
1.17ct
Cut: VG
Symmetry: EX
Polish: VG
Measurement: 5.8*5.75*4.19mm
Table%:70%
Depth: 72.9%
Girdle: slightly thick to thick

HOWEVER, under key to symbols, it says chip on the certificate. Does it mean there are a few chips there?

Thanks in advance!

first off i think table and depth are too high . is this gia, egl cert? i might look for another diamond if i was you.

This info might help. Just choose Princess from the drop down list at the top...

Princess cut chart

Some general advice from a previous post by researcher:

Although there's no real formula, try to find a stone with a table smaller than the depth, and a depth no greater than 75%. Also, look for a stone with a girdle that is not in the extremes (TN-M, M, and M-STK are best). Finally, try to find a stone with a crown of >10%. These specs will not ensure a spectacular stone, but they will definitely help you to weed out the worst ones! Once you find stones that sound good, try to get ideal scope images to examine the light leakage.
As it's classed as a VVS1 I doubt the chips are noticeable or anything to worry about. Also, definitely let us know what certificate this is. There's a big difference between labs.

Based on researcher's advice and on the chart, the table and depth percentages seem ok. If you have the crown % that will help.

Welcome Shopgirl!

You can't tell much by numbers unfortunately, ask the vendor if you can get some photos and an ASET image, as this will be very helpful in order to judge this diamond.

Also did you want such high clarity and colour? It is of course a personal preference, but I just wanted to mention that you could drop this and still have a very clean and white diamond. A chip is not an issue generally if noted on the grading report of VVS clarity.

Thanks so much for all your replies. The certificate is GIA. I don''t know the crown%, but I can ask. I am just afraid that I am paying for something with this amount of money that does not worth this much.

If you were me, will you go for the higher quality diamond(with smaller carat)or bigger carat (lower quality)?

Thanks again for all your advice. I have been looking for a diamond for a while. I have such a high hope to find the perfect diamond. And I am just a little nervous to commit to one.

If you went with an AGS graded stone you would have grade for light performance, which is really what you should be interested in for an attractive diamond...the proportions you have won''t tell you much about this issue.

Another important factor is to make sure that the stone is VERY square - better light performance - as good as or better than the one you have selected.

Also, the number of pavilion chevron facets will determine the size of the scintillation events you will see and whether or not these will show as white pinfire or larger, dispersion (colored) scintillation events...2 sets of chevrons will give you larger, more dispersive scintillation events than will sets of 3 or 4.

...and as Lorelei points out pic and ASET are important as are IdealScope and even Hearts and Arrows viewer images.

...finally, you could actually save quite a bit of $ by going to F color and to VS2/maybe even SI1/ clarity and still have a white, eye clean diamond.
