I proposed to my fiancee last June with an 18K White Gold Tacori ring (Style 2561) with a Round .62 Carat Diamond (Very Good cut, color I, SI2) and it looked beautiful on her petite fingers...but:

her skin reacted with the WG and it yellowed very quickly AND I wanted to get her a bigger diamond, but could not afford it at the time.

Needless to say, she thinks it''s being sent to Tacori for 5 weeks to be rhodium plated again, when I really upgraded it to the Platinum band and replaced the diamond with a new .83 Round cut diamond (Color F, Very Good Cut, VS1) and Tacori and my Jeweler have been really great in the process.

MY QUESTION (as I am not a ''diamond guy'')...

I know she''ll notice it''s in Platinum instead of WG when I give it to her in 5 weeks, RIGHT before the wedding ...but will she notice the size difference between the .62 and .83 carat diamond in there? I would think she would notice on her own, but just wondering what everyone else could guide me on this...will I need to tell her or point it out?

Thanks in advance!

Well I can see a huge difference between my 0.7 and my friend''s 0.85 so....yeah! What a sweetie you are!

Thanks! She has done so much planning for this wedding and sacrificing for everyone else, I thought it would be a nice thing to do, especially while I had the excuse that Tacori would already have it, so she will never expect it!

thanks for your input. I am utterly clueless when it comes to diamond sizes besides HUGE and TINY. Carats mean nothing to me :)

She may not notice, she just might think it''s the setting, or it just looks bigger and better than she remembered.

One thing though - I am very sentimental about things like this, I would be rather upset if my husband (or fiance) just did away with the diamond ring he proposed with, without my knowledge or consent, even if it was an upgrade.

Oh yeah, I thought of that--I asked her about a month ago if she minded if I ever upgraded her ring (to plat, or bigger diamond) as a wedding anniversary gift etc. and she said as long as the band design was exactly the same from Tacori--of course she was fine with it!

She knew when I proposed the diamond was much smaller than what I had wanted to get her, so it was a temporary thing! I made sure Tacori was doing the exact band as before!

Thanks for the concern though!

Hey, you are the best!!!

What a totally sweet thing to do!!!! That ring is going to look sooo much better with the new stone! I do think she''ll be able to tell the difference, but don''t be upset if she doesn''t because she won''t have seen the old ring for 5 weeks!

If you are worried about her noticing the size difference, maybe you could go even larger than a .83 if you got her the same color and clarity as her original stone. F VS1''s cost a bit more than I SI2''s do. You could probably get her a 1ct+ for the same price using her previous color clarity combo. She''d for sure notice THAT jump in size!

I think she will definitely be able to tell, although at first she might have to look at it a bit before asking what''s happened. I think it''s a really beautiful gesture, and I''m sure she''d be thrilled. Personally, I think seeing as you''ve done the upgrading for her the sentiment is still there whether it''s the original diamond or not. You still chose it, you still paid for it etc. Good on you!

Ditto. We''ve just upgraded from a E VS2 0.64 to an I SI1 0.82 and I definitley notice the difference - I love it!!

I do second hearts-arrows_girl though - if you still have time to look, dropping to a G and a nice eye-clean SI1 will give you even more size and you''d never know the difference from the F VS1.

Whatever you do, have a wonderful wedding!

that''s a great surprise and yes I think she will notice. Maybe not right away with how busy you all are but she will see the difference

It''s going to look quite different. It''s not only going to be noticeably bigger but whiter and especially sparklier. I have an F SI1 Ideal cut and its a very beautiful diamond.

However, she may not notice right away because you notice these things most when you have two things to compare with. she might think something like, Oh, they must have really cleaned my diamond to make it sparkle so much or something like that, or Oh, the platinum really makes it look more shiny. So don''t be disappointed if that happens--it doesn''t really mean she''s not ''noticing''.

Also, the platinum is going to feel better than the white gold did. I have both and the platinum has a pleasanter, heavy silky kind of feel.

You are nice to have done this (so long as it didn''t take money away from any important things--getting married is so expensive.

Best to you and the bride.

I think she will definitly notice (I would). You are so sweet for making those changes and surprising her!!!

I have not yet met a woman who did not notice much more about her engagement ring diamond than I imagined she would ever notice. Of course, she will see the difference. A woman''s power of observation is very different than my own and my wife has proved this to me over and over and over again....Not that I''m bored or tired of it, it just makes a person well convinced!.

Wow! I just signed on and saw all these responses! Thanks so much!!

I work with a small family friend Jeweler, so his diamond inventory is definitely not that extensive, but he gave me an amazing deal on this diamond and bought my old one back at 100%, so the 1 carat will have to wait until a wedding anniversary!

I am so excited to do this for her (especially the platinum) because she has been doing 95% of the planning, negotiating, accounting for this wedding, and I know it''s something she wanted (although never said it!)...

I really appreciate all of your input...if only I had known about Pricescope before I diamond-shopped last year!

I would think she''d be able to tell the difference. As far as the sentiment goes, he chose to do this all on his own and in my humble opinion it''s a VERY sweet thing to do! I''d be all kinds of sentimetal about the new bigger one!

IMHO, yes, she will definitely notice it, esp the color is F, thats going to be an icey looking rock. If she doesn''t notice it immediately, then maybe soon she will. But believe me she''ll notice it now or later.

BUT more importantly that YOU are the one who is doing this out of your own heart, no requests from her, now thats is SUPER SWEET!!! Actually, it is more than super sweet!

What a good heart you have!!!!

Congratulations on your engagement, good luck with the wedding and may both of you enjoy a lifelong happiness!!!

your such a good guy.. how sweet of you. Yes, she will notice, size and color, bar none!

Thanks...such kind words!

I knew there was a difference in color (going from an I to and F) and I''m sure she''ll notice that, I can''t wait to see it all complete when we get it!!

I attached two photos of the original ring...I love the Tacori band I ended up choosing and I''m glad the actual band will be the same, just a different material!--I know she likes classic looks...thanks again...

here''s another one our engagement photographer took

Oh--and her fingers are size 6, so I guess now that I look around other posts on PS and read things, if the diamond looks good sized in these pictures, it will look considerably larger to her with the new diamond!

have a great weekend everyone!

hey humphrey!

i''m positive she''ll notice. NOBODY is in touch with an engagement ring like the recipient! also - i have a .83ct center stone in my engagement ring, and before we bought it, we considered a .61ct. the .83ct is CONSIDERABLY larger and i chose it over the .61ct stone specifically because it looked larger. so yes, i think she''ll see right away.

a jump from I SI2 to F VS1 is going to be icing on the cake, and will make it look much whiter. and the platinum will give it a lovely weight.

all in all, this is a huge step up from where you started (and i also love your original ring!), and is an incredibly loving gesture.

i''m so pleased for both of you - this is going to be wonderful! do pls come back and let us know how she reacts!

Absolutely!!!!!!! In diamond world.... bigger IS better
