Upgrading through GOG

Hello,

I’d love to get some advice on upgrading my current diamond! Apologies in advance for the long post; welcome to my conundrum :boohoo:

I bought a premium antique cushion (I, VS2, 1.01) through GOG four years ago, which is in a platinum bezel setting. Niel’s gold set, and freezing_in_MO’s MC2 piqued my interest in gold, and I would love a higher performance diamond to go in a new setting.

I have been watching GOG’s inventory for over a year for a diamond to swap for mine; I was initially just looking at AVCs, then expanded to AVRs. I wanted to go a bit whiter, was happy to go smaller (.8 and above), but great cut was the most important thing. I look at my diamond so often, and I have found my eye to be so critical, that any imperfection eventually looms large. Nothing with the specs I’m after has popped up.

Lately I have been thinking of going the modern round brilliant route. I have seen these:

AVR options, there’s this one, but I think the K colour would bother me:

And this one, but it looks like there could be something off about the symmetry:

At the moment I’m leaning towards the F for it’s mind-cleanliness. I don’t know a lot about round brilliants, so I’d love some guidance from the experts.

I have talked to GOG about consignment, but I will likely take a loss that route. I have also thought about selling privately, but I’m in Australia, and I don’t really know how that would work. I'd prefer a lateral move, price-wise (with the current exchange rate), which puts the budget around 5K, with a bit of wriggle room.

I will have to unset my diamond from its setting to upgrade with GOG; I may keep the setting (I think the bezel will be ruined in the unsetting process and require a head-remake).

I’ve gone back and forth in my own head for too long; I wish I’d ventured beyond the Show Me the Bling page and realised I could ask advice earlier (clearly very forum-savvy :roll). I would really appreciate guidance. Thanks! :wavey:

If the I color bothers you in your current stone, I wouldn't opt for the I or K color stone. The F VS1 has great numbers for a round brilliant and would be very white. If those were the only options, I would definitely go for the F VS1. Have you talked to GOG about doing a trade with them?

I would check your cert too for the length and width dimensions of your current stone and compare them to any stone you might be considering. It would give you some idea of what size difference there might be between your current stone and another. A round brilliant will of course give you a totally different look than your current stone; you would just have to make sure that you would be happy with that look.

I am not sure you're going to be happy with .80 range stones when you've had 1 ct. What are the dimensions on your current stone?

I'd really think hard about whether you love antique cuts or modern rounds the most before you do this. I think the AVR is fine and great color and clarity. But it will face up a tiny bit smaller than the ideal cut round.

Thank you so much, MGR! It would be a very different look, and I've always preferred the antique cuts. I did get a .5 round brilliant for a pendant recently, and I have enjoyed the precision of it.

AV Inc has so many more options now; I've thought of getting an AV through them as a second ring  I used to think that I could be a one-ring-forever type, but now I quite like the idea of different flavours. Plus, I have two children--really, I need two rings to pass on, right?! And perhaps also a spare...

My current stone is 5.7x6. The F wouldn't be too dissimilar?

Thanks, DS! Posting at the same time!

Are you talking about the H AVR? It could be the way the stone was sitting in the video, but the centre doesn't seem to look as symmetrical as other videos.

My current ring is your old LM setting, DS! It was good to look back on your thread when it was set with the RB.

If I got an AV, I think I would like to go with a more sympathetic setting.

Yes it should be similar in size. My hesitation is that you love the antique cuts and they are very beautiful so I would hate for you to trade one for another and be unhappy. Two rings might just be the ticket for you - the best of both worlds!

Oh wow! That's great!:wavey:

I agree with the adding rings idea! It's too hard narrowing it down to just one type of diamond! If you don't trade in the current stone or trade it for a modern round, there are plenty of new AV stones on Jonathan's site here for present or future reference. (you cannot upgrade your current stone through his new business)
