Hi

For a number of reasons my DH and I are thinking of upgrading my 3 stone e-ring. we would like to keep the sidestones (aprox 20 points each) and upgrade the centre stone.

1. The sidestones are average quality (read upmarket mall store) H/I colour S2 stones - would an H&A G be too much of a contrast should I get a H colour SI instead. will it even be noticable, I am assuming the much better cut will make a difference??

2. We would love a .90 or 1 carat as the centre, what are your thoughts of this with the small side stones? any one seen anylike this? we just really want to keep the sidestones and not change them due to sentimental reasons.

All input much appreciated

Q1, no problem with the color, a color difference of 2 grades is acceptable for side-stones.

Q2, think that is personal preferences, I would like that ratio. A 20 pointer will have a diameter of about 3.8mm compared to a 1c of 6.5mm.

This image is for 1.5c but I think the ratio for the 1.5c to .25c is similar to your ratio.

The standard advice is to keep centre and side stones within 2 colour grades. The 20 pointers should look fine with the centre stone, often side stones of 50% smaller are popular but no hard and fast rules.

Thanks so much, the visuals are really helpful.

we are in a country were upgrades really are unheard of, so trying to do as much research before I visit a store and then will do the upgrade if all goes well with one of the regulars on here.

I guess I was worried about the sparke of my poor cut agains the sparkle of my new aca or equal centre stone.

thanks

Oh, stone cold 11, where did you find the visuals, they are great.

When I upgraded my center stone to a top tier H&A, it was the cut, itself, that no longer matched my sidestones. The difference was taking away from the beauty of the ring. My DH, who is not a diamond maven, noticed the difference immediately. I traded in my original wedding set and brought up the quality of the new set to match my center stone. I've never regretted it. This may not occur, in your situation, but I wanted to share my experience with you. My side stones were 20 pointers, as were the stones in my wedding ring.

I have G side stones and an H center. I can''t see the difference. My sides are also SI2 and they are .40. I can''t see inclusions either. I think your ring will be LOVELY!

You''ve been given some great advice and there is very little to add apart from I''d say not to rule out going a couple of grades with colour more than you think BUT you need to see the diamonds together in different lights. My centre stone here is an I colour but with strong blue fluor so looks much whiter than it is. The side stones are an F! You''d never know there was such a huge difference would you?

Rising Sun, I guess that is what I am worried about. The cut of my old stones v the new ones. Part of me thinks then dont go H&A, but then I think well that is silly as well,, I have grown to appreciate a good cut and wouldnt want less (whatever the lable of the cut iykwim).

Any links to your rings?

thanks heaps

luckily I love the research

Here is a picture of my rings. I am changing my settings this summer, because I want to try a halo. I am, however, keeping these settings because I can't let them go. I'll be having a Ceylon sapphire as my new center stone. If I don't love it to pieces, I'll put the diamond back in this setting and the sapphire in the halo
