I'd like to just start off by saying whoosh... All this diamond talk is WAY over my head!!

I've been doing some research to see if I can do the following..
I have a beautiful 1/2 round carat in a 6 prong setting (white gold) 3 stone ring. My husband wants to upgrade my ring to a 1 carat for our anniversary and of course I have no complaints about that... Given that I can keep the same ring. Now... is it possible for a 1/2 carat setting to accomodate a 1 carat stone? The setting seems to be pretty standard. (I've tried to take pics but they're not turning out.) Or do I have to get a completely different ring? I would really appreciate some info/advice on what to do!!

Thanks!!

I felt the same way in the beginning. You learn as you go. Each day seems to be a learning experiance for me. There is always some one here that can answer anything you need to know.

Depending on your setting they may be able to just change out the head, but it might end up sitting the main diamond up a lot higher than it is now based on the structure of the ring. Do you have sides stones or other things going on beside the head of the main diamond?

Too bad your photos aren''t working out; that would make it easier to see what''s going on with the whole ring.

I think the best thing would be to ask the jeweler and see what he/she says.

Someone please help me seriously!!! I''m sorry I have so little info but I really don''t know anything about diamonds. My hubby got it a chain diamond store... It''s really beautiful, but what girl wouldn''t love a bigger diamond? I just don''t want to give up the ring for sentimental reasons... If it''s between keeping the ring or getting a bigger diamond I''m keeping my little half carat!! But if anyone has any ideas/ advice, PLEASE let me know!!

Yeah I have two larger stones sitting right next to the center diamond, and then a couple of real small ones that are embedded in the ring.

Sorry, apparantly I suck at taking pics :)

i am no expert but the average diameter of a half carat is 5.10-5.15 mm. the average diameter of a well cut 1 carat is 6.5mm. I think it might be a tough squeeze if you had a solitaire. the sidestones in the setting would make it very difficult if not impossible. Again, I am no expert and am just guessing. Take it to a jeweler, preferably one that isn''t in a mall

and they will be able to tell you.

That''s the best I can do!! I just took it right off the website where we got the ring!!!

after seeing the picture. i''m going to keep my answer the same. it don''t think there would be enough room to put a bigger stone in the setting without messing up the sides

I agree

Do you guys think I could put a bigger stone in period? And if so, what do you think the biggest I could go would be?

sparkle, you really need the advice of a jeweler to see exactly how much bigger you can go, if at all..i''m sorry I can''t be of more help. Most of us here are just diamond lovers and buyers and don''t know those types of details that an experienced professional would.

If you are trading in your 1/2 ct why don''t you get a sapphire or gemstone to put in your e-ring and wear that on your right hand and put the 1 ct in a new setting for your left.

I am very attached to this ring as it being my engagement ring. I don''t really need a bigger rock for size''s sake, we thought it might be a nice gesture because we''ve been married for a while... Does that make sense? I might just get a big fat rock for my right hand, you never know!

If I do take it to a jeweler, any suggestions? I almost do want to take it to the jeweler I bought it from, just because the ring is under warranty and I don''t want to mess that up.

Thanks for all your help!!

i think you should take it to the jeweler you bought it from and ask them. If you can''t put a larger stone in it, there are pleny of beautiful right hand rings out there

Allright well now AFTER all the advice I find out what the setting is, and I quote:
"The engagement ring has one round diamond center stone and two round diamond side stones in a prong setting and four round diamond accents in a channel setting."

Well that''s helpful after the fact huh?

Thanks for all the advice, again! I''m going to the jeweler tomorrow!!

I did the same thing a few years ago and you will probably do fine. Take to a good jewler and they will be able to handle. it. I went from a .50 to a 1.5 and it looked fine.

GOOD LUCK

Ahh Rhonda, that is good news!! Did your ring look similar to mine before it was altered? There's a picture op top. I just don't want it to look gawdy with a big stone in the middle or have it sitting up really high. But your post really gives me hope!

Thanks!!

Different than yours yet similar......I had alot of side stones. No it did not look guady. If anything it made the set look FAB!!!! I was thrilled. The only reason I later changed the setting was to go to Platinum. I think you will be thrilled. GO FOR IT

My original e-ring was similar to yours in that it had channel set stones. The original stone in the middle was a .38ct in a 6 prong setting. When I got a larger diamond (family stone) I wanted to put it in the same setting to save money. The jeweler said they could do it but they had to put in a new head. Because the new head was so much bigger than the old one, they literally had to jam it in there for it to fit without remaking the entire ring. I did not like the way it looked at all, not to mention the channel set stones became loose from them jamming the head in (they basically disturbed the channels which is what they were trying to avoid). I then basically had the whole ring remade, and liked it for a while, but I just got a new setting last year.

I went to another jeweler (the one who remade the ring) and they said the first jeweler never should have attempted to put such a big head into a setting that was made for a 3/8ct stone. I wish I had just gotten a different setting from the beginning, as now my original setting is sitting in my jewelry box not being used and it looks completly different than the ring my husband proposed to me with. Makes me kind of sad, even though I wasn''t crazy about the setting. I have considered getting it remade back to its original condition just to have it for sentimental sake.

Since it sounds like you are really attached to your current ring, I wouldn''t mess with it at all. If you still want the 1ct, put it in a brand new ring. If you decide to put it in the old setting, I don''t think the look will be what you are hoping for.

Thanks for your input Pebbles!! I have actually been thinking about that. Maybe I won''t go as big as a whole carat, but I think I will take it to the jeweler and see how big I can go without it getting completely jammed. If I can''t go bigger, then it''s just too bad!! Anyway, I really appreciate your story!!

I just wanted to post again and let you all know that I really appreciate all the input I got!!

Thanks a LOT!!
