I'm hoping someone can help me! I've posted earlier about possibly haloing my current 1.70 round brilliant, but when I went to try on round halos they seemed to take away from the stone. I have an appt. with my jeweler on Saturday and would like some tips before I meet her. This jeweler has been good to me, but she stated it would cost us 10k to upgrade the current stone to a 2.2 rb with the same specs. That seems ridiculous to me because I've found several 2.2 ribs for $12 or $13k. Is this true??

We paid $8500 for the current stone it's a g graded si2. She's recommending just haloing the stone in a cushion halo.

I like this one,see below, but wonder if I won't be happy in the long run? She's saying she could do it for $1100

My other thought is to try and swap out the rb for an oval. Is that a bad decision? I know ovals are cheaper and I honestly think with a subtle halo it would be gorgeous. Plus the shape would really flatter my long thin fingers!! Here's a pic of what I'm thinking.

Please let me know which is the better financial decision.

Thank you in advance!

Oval- possibly halo?

Anyone??

I re-set my 1.5 ct MRB solitaire into VC Emilya in 2013 (the head of my solitaire broke off) and I loved it, very delicate and I thought it did a lot for my center stone. That ring unfortunately went missing late last year and since it is our 10 year anniversary we decided to upgrade the center stone. I recently purchased a Whiteflash ACA 2.07 ct and I can tell you that it was much more then $12-13k! However, it is a "super ideal" cut stone. I'm pretty sure I am not going to halo it at this time (still deciding on setting).

I think the halo could be beautiful and make you happy, BUT the halo has to done right!! I would check the quality of the halo's offered at your jeweler. Oval in a delicate halo is beautiful choice as well.

Attached is a pic of my former Emilyaiphone_pics_102613_5.jpg

Also is link to a beautiful oval halo done by VC as well

Hi There,

I'm not sure about the cost of upgrading from what you have & of the original agreement with your vendor. Perhaps check the PS vendors inventory which will include in house stones & a virtual database ( your own vendor most likely will be able to access from as well).

I love rounds in a cushion halo. Excellent & inexpensive (well..comparing new stone to new setting anyway!) way to change shape & size. :wink2: Take a look at Gabriel & Co. New York. There are quite a few cushion halo settings & the price / Quality both are great. Many PS's own them.

I love ovals but finding a great one is a bit more challenging than finding a round. You have to decide if the effort & new cost is worth it.
Here's one that's pre-owned if that might be something you want to consider. Grace would be able to tell you about the stone.

Take a look at James Allen. Narrow down your requirements & those that are skilled at finding great ovals will be able to help you out.

No, please don't put a round in an oval halo. When people talk about putting a round in a cushion halo, the center of the setting is designed for a round. It is not the same thing. I'll come back and give you my thoughts, but a 2.2 ct stone certainly can cost $10k+ more than a 1.7 ct. with the same specs.

Okay, is your current stone GIA graded? Because the $12-13k for 2 cts sounds like it can't be GIA graded. So if it is another lab that exaggerates grades, you really have no idea what you're buying. The only other reliable lab is AGS.

But even in the best cut stones with reliable grading (AGS), there can be around a $10k difference in price:

Two 2.2 ct H VS2 GIA Excellent cut stones:

The difference between 1.7 G SI2 and 2.2 G SI2 GIA Ex cut is from around $12k to $20k.

Bottom line, you can get a pretty nice platinum halo setting for around $2k up which is a very inexpensive way to add size.

https://www.ritani.com/engagement-rings/french-set-halo-diamond-band-engagement-ring-in-platinum/5048 (cushion shaped halo but made for round center)

(Ritani...the best I know of on the lower end of the price spectrum)

Custom from a known quality pave ring maker will run more like $3-5k.

Thank you! My stone is an EGL graded stone, which is worrisome. The stones I was looking at were j colored to give me the lower price point .

Yes, I've contacted Maytal Hannah and she quoted me $3500 for her cushion halo, but I'm hesitant because every cushion I try on doesn't look right .

Thank you so much for all your help I really appreciate it!!

II was hoping I could get an upgrade before I have my daughter, which is in about 2 months..:( After she's born I know it will be pushed to the back burner..I don't want to rush this process but I feel like this is my only time :(
