So I’ve had too much time on my hands because of my broken wrist and I’ve been perusing the Whiteflash website....
If I were to upgrade to a bigger diamond, I’m wondering if there’s something that I can improve opon when looking at the proportions of my current diamond. :saint: I have read people stating that a smaller table is better?
Current diamond: https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-4015035.htm

I don’t want to go higher in clarity, in fact I would be ok going down to a clean VS2 in order to gain size.
I don’t think I want to go down in colour as I’m afraid of tint...

Ideally I would like to get a 1.6-1.7ct as 0.2ct bigger is where I should see a difference?

ATM Whiteflash doesn’t seem to have much in this size range.

Oops sorry forgot to state the budget...
I would like to keep it under $18,500US. Our Canadian dollar is low.

Have you considered an SI1? I was skeptical and had always had VS or VVS diamonds, but my SI1 AGS0 is completely eye-clean and gorgeous. It really changed the way I look at clarity. Anyway, if you're ok with SI1 you have more options at your price point.

Agree! I have an SI1 and can’t see a thing.

With your budget, and if you want an ACA, and if you want to stay at G or better and VS2 or better I only see two options right now. First one is $200 over via wire, second one is under.

Thank you very much @kal2021. I had The 1.635ct on my wish list already and I’ve put the other two on as well.

Funny enough @kal2021 that is the only SI1 on my wish list however it’s above my budget for now...
Thank you for the suggestion though! =)2

Edited to add: WOW it’s looks gorgeous!! I hadn’t looked at the video yet!

Got it! Yea, those videos always get you!

A while back I saved a picture of @HappyNewLife ‘s 1.7ct diamond ring on her 4.5 finger as my upgrade goal. I’m the same ring size. That is before DSS set in and she acquired a honker! :lol-2:

I’m considering the following diamond for my upgrade:
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-4042799.htm

This is my current diamond:
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-4015035.htm

Michelle from Whiteflash confirmed that I can use the same ring setting, they’re just going to change the head. It’s their platinum Elegant solitaire setting. I’m waiting for her to pull the diamond and confirm that’s its eye clean. I was worried about the inclusions.

I put the 1.635ct diamond through the HCA calculator and it’s a 1.4. My current diamond is 0.7 so I’m wondering if the 1.635 will perform even better?

I noticed that the table of the 1.635ct is smaller than my current diamond. 55.9 vs 57.1. I’ve read on here that a smaller table produces more fire?

Do you think I’ll see a size difference?

Any opinions are greatly appreciated! :geek2:

I definitely think you will see a size difference! I think the specs on the upgrade stone may very well produce more fire. I would just want to make sure that the table inclusion is not visible. Some folks are more clarity conscious than others - not sure where you fall regarding clarity.

Thank you @MissGotRocks! Just heard back from Michelle and it is indeed eye clean. I’m more mind clean conscious as I had laser eye corrective surgery a few years ago so my close up vision is pretty crappy...lol

That's great! VS2 is nothing to sneeze at clarity wise. Such a gorgeous silver lining to the broken wrist cloud - I am delighted for you!!

WF's upgrade policy certainly makes it easy to swap stones. Unfortunately the setting may need tweaked or replaced as well, so please keep that in mind. If by chance you bought a designer band through WF, then they offer a 50% trade in value on those bands. Otherwise, you likely won't get anything for the existing setting.

See bottom paragraph of this page:

Not trying to rain on your parade. I'm all for an upgrade. I just got the impression from your initial post you were a little wish-washy on the deal. I'd encourage you to identify what is truly important in an upgrade and make sure you accomplish those goals, as you will have some financial expense involved in the matter.

You asked about size earlier. Not that carat weight doesn't matter, but try to focus on the spread instead. Because as you change the diamond proportions (table, depth, crown, pavilion, etc) then the spread will change for a diamond of equal weight. For instance my fiancee's ring measures 6.18 x 6.21 but is only 0.867 carats. This size (or spread) is more typical of a stone in the 0.90-0.93 carat range.

That said, if you look at your current ring it measures 7.21 x 7.23. The proposed 1.635 stone measures 7.54 x 7.57. Right around a 0.33mm difference, which is just a hair smaller than 1/64 of an inch. Most people can begin to see a size difference of 0.20mm (about 1/128th inch) when two stones are placed next to each other. However, 0.20mm is not considered significant by most people and I'd argue that if shown the two stones separately and without knowledge of size, then the viewer wouldn't be able to discern a memorable difference.

Here is what the 0.33mm difference looks like in a side by side comparison. Granted, the stone will also have more depth (as carat weight is a function of L x W x D x 0.0061, for a round diamond) but this gives a fairly accurate top view comparison. You can make your own decision if this is a significant enough size increase for you.

Your stone has similar proportions to my fiancee's BGD stone. I actually think your stone is a little more balanced than hers, and probably has a little more fire where hers may have a little more white light return. Mainly because her table is bigger and crown shallower.

https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/...0.867-h-vs2-round-diamond-ags-bl-104098623002
  • Table = 57.1 | 57.9
  • Depth = 60.7 | 60.1
  • Crown Angle = 34.3 | 33.9
  • Crown Height = 14.6 | 14.1
  • Pavilion Angle = 40.6 | 40.7
  • Pavilion Depth = 42.8 | 42.9
  • Stars = 50 | 48
  • LGF = 76 | 76
  • Girdle = Thin-Medium | Thin-Medium
  • HCA = 0.7 TIC (excellent light return, fire & scintillation, very good spread) | 0.7 TIC (all excellent)
Of course I biased, but I think her ring & stone looks gorgeous. It has the unique ability to be super white in certain conditions that truly amaze me. Other times, it sparkles like a rock star. Shortly after getting the ring I noticed it had some wax gunk on it as I examined under a scope, and had been trying to get it off for a little bit of time. This last time I had it steam cleaned, I guess it finally knocked off everything because it has been nothing short of a stunner! We were in a Diamonds Direct (DD) at the time, and seriously 4-5 of the DD sales reps came over to see the ring and make a comment about how gorgeous it was. That baby was on fire!

All that said, I have learned quite a lot since initially purchasing her stone and while it's gorgeous it doesn't have proportions I would specifically seek out. I tend to favor fire. I know to get that a smaller table will increase the upper girdle facets and give me those bold rainbow flashes (more fire) and that a steeper crown will do the same. If I were trading or re-buying today, I'd be targeting a 54-56 table, 34.5/40.7, 34.5/40.8 or 35/40.6 combo with 75-77 LGF's and depth less than 62. Hearts & arrows symmetry of course. As a result I believe I'd see an improvement of fire, probably at the expense of some white light return (remember, everything is a trade off) but I'd be okay with that as I would likely be looking at an F+ color stone due to her color sensitivity and would prefer a D/E if budget allowed. And probably a VS2 for good measure, unless a very super eye clean SI1, as I suffer from mind clean issues.

Since your stone is more balanced than hers, I don't think you will see much of an improvement but I do think some improvement in fire can be gained. When looking at the proposed new 1.635 and your existing stone side by side in the WF glamour videos, it seems to me the 1.635 has a bolder and bigger rainbow flashes (fire) than your stone. But again, these are glamour videos meant to provide the best lighting environment to see that fire. It likely won't be as evident in real life as your existing stone is already very well balanced.

Thank you very much @sledge! Your comments are incredibly helpful. I actually tried to view the two diamond videos at the same time but I wasn’t able to do it so thank you for that!!
My goal was to upgrade to a diamond over 1.6ct with the same or almost the same specs as my current diamond. I think I’m achieving this with the new stone and it has a slightly smaller table to boot. :kiss2:
Michelle at Whiteflash assures me it’s eye clean and gorgeous. She’s also confirmed that I can use my existing Whiteflash platinum Elegant setting for only a nominal fee to change the head.
She also sent me a picture of a 1.4ct diamond with pretty much the same specs as my current diamond right next to the 1.635ct diamond (bottom in picture) and there is a visual differnce in size. :mrgreen2:

You're very welcome @Weecam. I'm glad you found the comments & video helpful. :cool2:

I am glad to hear you will have minimal charges to upgrade the setting. That makes it easier to justify. Also, it's super useful to see actual diamonds in a comparison view like above.

One final thought, did Michelle comment on the strength of the G color? Only asking because you indicated you are sensitive to color. As you are probably aware, color grades are actually a RANGE meaning you can have a high, low, medium, etc. The further you move down the color scale, the more range that can exist.

Sounds like you are getting very close to pulling the trigger. Can't wait to see pictures of the new bling! =)2

Didn’t think to ask about the strength of the G colour....

I sent my 1.4ct diamond in for the upgrade yesterday. It should arrive there this morning. All the paperwork was taken care of by Whiteflash and all I had to do was go to Fedex. :D

For sure I’ll post pictures!

Can’t wait to see pics of your new ring! Congrats!

Totally psyched for you -- can't wait to see the pics!!!

One of the best things about the WF upgrade policy is you get to do exactly as you are, upgrading at a pace that works best for your life.

YAY!!! Cant wait to see the new diamond!

Whiteflash has confirmed that they received my 1.4ct diamond and it’s been sent for verification. I should receive confirmation in 2-3 business days.
Honestly it was incredibly easy! I was very nervous about sending such an expensive item from Canada but Whiteflash took care of all the customs paperwork and sent me the Fedex shipping label. All I had to do was go to a FedEx depot.
And for anyone in Canada wishing to use their upgrade policy....you only pay taxes on the difference in price. :cool2:

Yippee glamour pictures!

The ring is scheduled to arrive by FedEx tomorrow but we’re in the midst of a snowstorm so I’m not counting on it....

Very beautiful!:love::love::love:

Wow!! That’s a quick turnaround. It’s goint to be awesome!!!

Three hundred pics please:whistle:

@Weecam It looks gorgeous! I didn’t read the entire thread, but is that setting the Vatche U113?
