For those of you wearing James Meyer in unplated white gold... does anyone know whether he uses nickel white gold or palladium white gold, or something else entirely? I''ve contacted him about e/wrings but haven''t heard back, and was hoping someone might already know...

I was noticing that his white gold seems much whiter than other unplated white golds I''m seeing (Liane''s set, for example).

I think its nickel- not sure though. I talked about getting unplated wg, but I have a tendency to allergy so decided on platinum instead. I would ring him. he is usually more contactable by phone than email.

Thanks! Actually, I''ve talked with him on the phone, but it was brief b/c he was busy at that time so he asked me to email. :)

Can I ask how you are liking your ring in the platinum? Are you noticing it getting scratched up at all? My only concern with getting platinum is keeping a relatively polished finish...

Hi nicoleanne,
my JM piece is in YG and plat, so I can''t speak to the WG question.

However, I wouldn''t be concerned in the polish issue if you''re going with Jim, as all of his pieces have an antiqued finish anyway with lots of detail (ie. they don''t really call for a high polish imho).

hth a lil..

I have the style ENG-K (old style no. 1360 - similar to the current 1379 shape) in unplated white gold with green gold accents

it is my ering and I have had it since October so I have now had a while to check it out against a few different white metals

I would say it is a little ''warmer'' and not a true icy bling shiny white hue - but in no way would I say it is yellow either up close or from a distance

(sorry - I am unsure abut the alloy mix - Jim is lovely to deal with and always answered everyone of my questions - he gets busy so sometimes you need to wait a day or so something that drove me nuts at first because I was so excited and wanted to know every detail about the ring immediately!)

I agree with arjunajane re: the finish - I am mighty rough on my hands - as I work with costume jewellery for my day job and even though I have already inflicted a few dings to the stirrup - they are not that obvious

attached is an old pic so you can see the hue of the metals - we have a got a new camera for Christmas - but I have not worked out the macro yet

another shot on a contrast background - making it look very shiny somehow

Yep, my wg ring is oxidized-the texture is most appreciated.

It's a nickel alloy. The color is definitely warm.

I wouldn't worry about the polish if you are choosing platinum. Over time, it will develop a patina, which adds to the charm imo. If you don't like the patina, plat can always be repolished.

Thanks to everybody for the great information!

I think I''ll be going with white gold. I was worried that perhaps it didn''t look as white in real life as in the pictures I''m seeing on JM''s site and on PS. It seems to have more warmth/depth than plat, maybe. Just wanting to avoid a "light yellow" look.

AJ: My bf will be excited to know the setting is detailed/has a unique finish. He''s been wanting me to have a fully hammered ring... a little too rustic for me, though. JM''s work is a perfect compromise.

heliotrope: Your pics were very helpful. I also love the green gold accents on yours--so subtle!

Coati: I''ve often admired your ring--you have a platinum bezel/wraps, correct? Do you notice the contrast much? I''m not usually for a two-toned look (though I''m starting to change my mind) but it seems to create depth rather than sharp contrast.

ok - you have inspired me to work out the new camera

here is my first pic - I feel it shows the true colour (well on my screen at least!)

and the macro is so good you can even see my finger prints on the side

I think that the yellow you can see is actually reflecting off the wraps and bezel

have fun deciding
