Unusual stone/bone/shell (?) hanging inside sterling earring

This pair of sterling braided hoop earrings has a material hanging inside the loop that I cannot identify. It feels like stone, but could possibly be bone or shell. Has anyone seen a similar material that could help me identify it? Thank you!
