Unusual Pin-- what is this style called

Hi, This pin is from a garage sale. The elderly woman said she got it from her parents.

I'm wondering what the style /technique is. The front is sort of shellacked so it is smooth?

I think it is painted under the shiny shellac. I googled tromp l'ouel pin ...or however you spell it...and didn't find anything
