Unusual Mount... please help identify

I recently purchased this beautiful emerald ring from the UK. It has the most unusual mount... it's 2 peices... copper setting for the stones and 925 silver for the ring and 2nd piece of the mount... can anyone help identify what this type of mounting is called and what era it was from?

I agree, looks like 1980s to me! It's definitely an interesting setting!
