Unhappy with purchase

Sorry this is so long, but I just don't know what to do! The woes of purchasing online, sight unseen! I recently purchase a U prong platinum 5 stone ring. I was leaning towards a trellis, but the sales rep kept telling me how beautiful the U prong was and sent several pics. I ordered 5 I colored ~ .35 stones for a total carat weight of 1.78. When the ring arrived, I was not sure I liked it, but thought maybe it was just because it had been so long since I wore a 5 stone, and my last one was 1.0 cts.

Within days of receiving the ring, I went out of the country for a month and a half. The longer I look at the ring, the less I like it. Here are my issues:

1. Color - Part of the problem is the I colored stones. My wedding set is a 1.73 J colored stone set with .10's E and F in color (all stones are AGS0 Ideal cut). I do not notice the color in the J at all, and I get tons of compliments every day on my set, so I assumed I would be fine with I colored stones. I think the brightness of the .10's in my wedding set is really eye catching. With that being said, I know I want to switch out to F/G colored stones (probably more F).

2. The setting - I am questioning if switching the stones will make enough of a difference or if I should try to see if I can switch out the band as well for a trellis (if that is even possible). With the U prong, the setting does sit up a bit higher than what I am used to and it is not very delicate.

Any words of wisdom? I know this is a bit of a ramble, but I am just sick about the amount of money I spent on something I don't love. I plan to call the vendor later today to discuss my options, but would like a little PS feedback, please.

Well, it sounds like you are well past any return period and, based on your post, there does not appear to be any manufacturing or design defects -- in other words, no valid reason for a vendor to accept the ring back for refund/full credit.

It sounds like you have buyer's remorse and not only want to change the stones but also the ring setting (so, a whole new ring).

Not sure what you are expecting from the vendor - I guess it is possible they could accept the ring back as a partial trade-in towards the cost of a new ring, applying the scrap metal worth of the setting and perhaps the wholesale value of the diamonds? But based on my experience with more than one PS vendor, this may not be a viable option.

Your better bet, to recoup more money, is likely to sell your current ring on the secondhand market (post in the PS PreLoved Forum including your DiamondBistro, LoupeTroop and/or eBay listing link) .

Of course, it all depends on your vendor and their specific refund/return/upgrade benefits - be sure to check that out thoroughly before you call the vendor.

This happened to me too! I had a custom made Five Stone ring with diamonds almost the exact same size. The ring was beautiful but too high and not comfortable. (They tried to tell me but I wanted those diamonds in the gallery)

While I was happy with the stones I did end up buying a new setting that lowered the diamonds down to nearly eternity ring level. I couldn't find pictures of the reset (which I sold later) but I did find the thread from the first failed attempt.

I would say go lower on the setting if you can. I felt like the diamonds looked better in the lower setting. That might save you from changing them out :read: for a different color.

I know I am well beyond the return period. My intent is to "upgrade" the diamonds to a better color for me. The vendor has a very generous upgrade policy, so not worried about the stones. I will likely have to live with the setting, but hopefully the stones will make enough of a difference to satisfy me. Just wish I would have listened to my gut as far as the setting.

What size is your ring, Mayk? I almost feel like the stones in mine are a little too much for my 5.75 finger, but maybe I wouldn't feel that way if it were in a different setting. I tried calling the vendor this morning, but no answer. Will have to try again later.

That ring was a 6 and I felt that way until I had it reset.. I'll try and see if I can find a picture of the reset.

I couldn't find a picture of my reset.. I'm sure there is one here somewhere. But this ID Jewelry setting is very similar. I was much happier. I only sold it to get my EC. I miss it.. It was a nice ring and the change made it more comfortable.

Are the colour differences noted by AGS or GIA or another cert company? That could be part of the color issues. I am not sure the settings would change it that much? I could be wrong....

All stones are AGS0 Ideal cut, in both my wedding set and the 5 stone ring. Not sure why I am noticing the color so much.
